This study investigated relationships between dietary vitamin D intake and serum levels of leptin and adiponectin in members of Mennonite communities in Kansas. Nutritional profiles were constructed from food frequency questionnaires and dietary recalls, and blood samples were taken to measure biomarkers. Multiple linear regressions controlling for relevant factors found that dietary vitamin D intake explained approximately 73% of leptin variation in males and 52% in females, and 13% and 28% of adiponectin variation respectively. The results suggest linear relationships between vitamin D intake and these metabolic hormones.

Cancer cells mainly depend on fermentation to produce energy and divide, while normal cells rely more on cellular respiration. Increasing cellular respiration, especially in mitochondria and cytosol, can stop cell division of both cancer and normal cells. Studies have found that the sugar erythrose is able to increase cellular respiration in cancer cells through its conversion to carbon dioxide and water without residue, causing cancer cell lines of various types to die at an erythrose concentration of around 4mM, while having similar effects on growth as glucose on normal cells up to 30mM. Erythrose shows potential as a targeted cancer treatment by increasing cellular respiration in cancers to kill them without damaging normal tissues.

SUMMARY
Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined by core behavioral impairments, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are commonly reported. Subsets of ASD individuals display dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, and some exhibit increased intestinal permeability. Here we demonstrate GI barrier defects
and microbiota alterations in a mouse model displaying features of ASD, maternal immune activation (MIA). Oral treatment of MIA offspring with the human commensal Bacteroides fragilis corrects gut permeability, alters microbial composition and ameliorates ASD-related defects in communicative,
stereotypic, anxiety-like and sensorimotor behaviors. MIA offspring display an altered serum metabolomic profile, and B. fragilis modulates levels of several metabolites. Treating naïve mice with a metabolite that is increased by MIA and restored by B. fragilis causes behavioral abnormalities, suggesting that gut bacterial effects on the host metabolome impact behavior. Taken together, these findings support a gut-microbiome-brain connection in ASD and identify a potential probiotic therapy

The results showed that higher phosphatidylcholine levels were associated with better cognitive flexibility and greater prefrontal cortex thickness. Statistical analysis revealed that prefrontal cortex thickness mediated the relationship between phosphatidylcholine levels and cognitive performance. This suggests that phosphatidylcholine may help preserve cognitive flexibility in aging by maintaining the structural integrity of the prefrontal cortex.

Depression is an insidious issue in the US and elsewhere. Lifestyle habits that are very different from our ancestral environment may be to blame, and one particularly problematic area is food choice. Depressive symptoms share much in common with the adaptive features of sickness behavior, which is functional when operating in an environment of ancestrally normal immune stressor. Modern diets likely activate the immune system (primarily the inflammatory response) and induce the cascade of adaptive responses that collective make up sickness behavior. Due to their similarities, these may then diagnosed as depression. In this talk, I discuss the links among diet, depression, and inflammation, as well as highlighting some specific dietary components that contribute to this response.
