Medieval guilds played an important economic and social role in medieval Europe. Guilds were organizations of craftsmen and merchants that regulated trades and skills. Apprentices learned from journeymen until becoming masters of their craft. Guilds helped establish standards of quality, wages, and ethics through apprenticeships and the hierarchy of apprentice to journeyman to master.
