National History Day Contest! Global History 10 - Unit 3 Bronx Lab School
What is NHD? National History Day is an exciting program for 6th–12th grade students. Based in historic research, students create papers, performances, documentaries, and exhibits. Students present their projects at the city level, with the top entries moving on to New York State History Day in Cooperstown, NY. The top entries at the state contest move on to National History Day in College Park, Maryland. More than just one day, History Day is a program that engages students in a self-guided project over the course of the school year.

5 Steps to BLS History Day Pick a general topic World War I, Russian Revolution, World War II, Cold war Learn about your topic Pick a specific topic Triumph and Tragedy Research, Research, Research Present Your Learning
Presentation of Learning Options Research Paper Exhibits Performance* Documentary* Website*
Paper A research paper discussing your topic (like in English Class) 1500-2500 Words Use citations throughout
Exhibit A display board using images and text to discuss your topic Max Size: 40 in wide, 30 in deep, 6 ft high 500 word limit Uses extensive visuals
Performance* An original, dramatic performance on your topic Max: 10 minutes Must produce written script May use audio/visual materials May use costumes
Documentary* An original, documentary film on your topic Max: 10 minutes All work must be done by students (including editing, narration, etc) Must include credits
Website* An original website on your subject 1200 student written words Max: 50 MB Must include links to any media players used
Performance/Doc/ Website Each option is only open to 1-3 groups total (not per section) These options will require SUBSTANTIAL extra work OUTSIDE OF CLASS on a regularly SCHEDULED basis Groups interested in these options must go through interview process with me (and any one else who might help) to prove your commitment Groups who successfully complete these will receive 10% extra credit for project
In addition,  all students will: Complete a title page Complete a 500 word process paper individually (except research paper people) Complete an annotated bibliography,differentiating between primary and secondary sources
Triumph and Tragedy All projects must explain their subject in terms of “Triumph and Tragedy”
By the end of the unit you will: Conduct in depth research on a subject in which you are interested Understand 4 major wars through the lenses of Cause and Effect & Triumph and Tragedy Evaluate sources for bias and reliability Differentiate between primary and secondary sources Complete a project worthy of being displayed to the public
