Hands-On Project
DATA AND NETWORKS FINAL ASSIGNMENT
1
In this report, I shall give a comparison to three of the currently most trusted
sources of VoIP services that require a payment plan, subscription, or other form of
shareware-style subscription. (PRWeb, 2014) I will then compare Skype to the three as it is
a free VoIP service. There will be information in general about each company, including
quality of service, general overview, and any personal experiences/knowledge that I
might have. I will provide a financial comparison using the pricing information provided
by each company as to how cost effective it is for a small business to setup, install,
operate, and maintain a VoIP service.
Vonage (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014)
Vonage offers true virtual and cloud PBX/VoIP services on a professional level that
is trusted worldwide. It integrates both virtual and cloud services with physical services
and requires minimal interruption of business. They have no phone requirement. They
offer all services using any phone system. There seems to be no actual plans, simply
choosing an Unlimited Extension plan is all you have, plus choosing extra Virtual PBX and
Metered extensions and add-on features. I could not find any current QoS information on
their website or online. They give their services without any setup or activation fees, no
physical hardware fees, and no maintenance costs beyond the monthly payment plan.
This company has a VERY simple planning system and a very cost-effective
management system. $39.99 per month is most often what you pay and that includes all
the Standard Features, unlimited extensions, free calling internally with USA and Canada
calling, extremely cheap Long Distance services, and discounted prices on some
physical devices for networking and IP phones. The only other costs involved are adding
Add-On Features and possibly buying licensed routers, IP phones, and other hardware
into the pricing of your initial investment. A single year for any sized company with t he
Standard Features only is $479.88 ($39.99 * 12 months) per year. Adding call monitoring
and call recording brings the price tag up to $1,679.64 ($39.99 + $49.99 + $49.99 * 12
months) per year.
All in all, Vonage offers extremely cheap VoIP services with incredible features
and keeps things simple stupid with its inherent one plan modular design.
Pricing & Features
1. Virtual PBX Extensions: $14.99 per month per extension, requires at least one
unlimited extension and one company number already possessed by the
company through Vonage. (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014)
2
2. Metered Extensions: $14.99 per month per extension plus $3 cents per minute,
requires at least one unlimited extension and one company number already
possessed by the company through Vonage. (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014)
3. Unlimited Extensions: $39.99 per month per extension, minimum order requirement
is one unlimited extension and a company number; multi-line discounts are
available (would need to contact Vonage for actual pricing information on these
discounts). (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014)
4. International Long Distance: available for as little as $1 cent per minute to most
European countries up to maybe $10 cents to most Asian and Middle Eastern
countries, while African and South American countries are between $1 cent and
$20 cents via a landline. Most mobile prices are between double and five times
the normal cost of landline prices, depending on the country. This is an added
feature available to all types of extension plans. (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014)
5. Standard Features for all extension plans: (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014)
a. Admin/User Portals: Manage everything from the account anywhere.

caller ID, emergency assistance, follow me, music on hold, never miss a
call, set caller ID, simultaneous ring, virtual receptionist, and voicemail
services (visual voicemail, voicemail to email, customizable greetings,
secure remote access)

applications

f. Multiple devices on one extension
g. Microsoft Outlook integration

l. Desktop: a specific application provided for free by Vonage Business
Solutions as a way to integrate all their services into one place. Available
for Mac OS X 10.4 or later and Windows XP SP2 (all versions), Vista (all
versions), 7 (all versions), and 8 (all versions). {This is an optional
application, it is NOT require for Vonage services}
6. Add-on Features; these cost a specific amount per unique feature. Most are
added monthly expenses. (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014)
a. Advanced Phone Management: Call grouping ($4.99 per month), call
monitoring ($49.99 per month per account), call queues ($14.99 per
month plus $3 cents per minute), company call recording services ($49.99
per month), conference bridging ($14.99 per month plus $3 cents a

c. Main Company Numbers ($9.99 per month)
d. Paperless Fax ($14.99 per month)
e. Toll-Free Numbers ($39.99 per month)
RingCentral (RingCentral, 2014)
RingCentral offers true virtual and cloud PBX/VoIP services on a professional level
that is trusted worldwide. It integrates both virtual and cloud services with physical
services and requires minimal interruption of business. It seems that they do not have a
specific phone type requirement for using their services. They offer all services using any
phone system. For all packages and products, there seems to be no hardware costs, no
setup or activation fees, and you don’t require a contract, even though contracts are
available.
RingCentral guarantees the highest VoIP quality of service with its own QoS
agency and cover a wide variety of routers available. It even provides a QoS test with
your current connection to see how well you would do by simulating multiple phone calls
across their VoIP service.
I’ll use their Office Premium package plan on an annual payment plan for 10
users/extensions: $34.99 per month per user ($34.99 * 10 users/extensions * 12 months)
gives a total of $4,198.80 per year. I spoke to my Mother who has experience with
4
dealing in purchasing and managing costs for a normal phone system without VoIP and
she says that the aforementioned costs are extremely cheap compared to the features
you get.

Jive (Jive Communications, Inc., 2014)
Jive provides enterprise-level quality VoIP services using Virtual PBX and proper
Quality of Service infrastructure. They offer no cost installation, maintenance, and setup.
They provide everything a company needs to have a fully secure, integrated VoIP
service with minimal business interruption. Their QoS is designed using a combination of
factors: physical network separation, logical network separation, and class-of-service
prioritization. This is possibly the most comprehensive of all the VoIP services I have seen.
Other than not finding pricing or plan information for their Enterprise-level offerings, it had
everything I would need to start up a VoIP service within a company and KNOW without
question what will happen, how it will happen, what does it mean for the company, and
why they do it.
Since the company does not provide any financial details concerning their
Enterprise-level (above 100 users) services, I will use their Small Business offering. For the
requested 10 extensions, the minimal cost for one year of service would be ($23.95 * 10
users/extensions/devices * 12 months) gives a total of $2,874.00 per year. If each
user/extension had multiple devices, then the cost would go up exponentially. Say if we
added a desktop and a laptop plus a smartphone to every extension: $23.95 * 40
users/extensions/devices * 12 months which gives a total of $11,496.00 per year.
This is easily the most expensive option out of everything I have reviewed thus far.
In fact, I might consider this ridiculous even for enterprises. The ROI in this would be
ridiculous for companies over 100 users. Imagine if you had a company with 5,000
employees across five sites. If we simply went with the Tier 5 pricing, as Enterprise pricing is
unavailable, that would be $19.99 * 20,000 (5,000 users/phone extensions, 5,000 desktops,
5,000 smartphones, 5,000 laptops) * 12 months gives a total of $4,797,600.00 per year!
That is beyond comprehension! I hope that their enterprise pricing is much more
competitive and financially fiscal than that because as of right now, I would go
somewhere else for the sheer cost if I had an enterprise.
I actually had a conversation with a customer support employee via live chat
while I was finishing up my references for this essay and he told me directly that Enterprise
pricing is definitely not available to the public. He was very informative and very polite.

Enterprise Offering (Jive Communications, Inc., 2014)
I could not find a single thing on pricing or individual plans as with Small Business.
It appears that the only way to find out any pricing information is to contact the
company directly.
Skype (Microsoft Co., 2014)
Skype is a completely free VoIP service which offers comprehensive features for
non-business users and even some business users to utilize VoIP services without the
tremendous cost involved. In comparison to the paid services, Skype is a relatively
decent system that makes it extremely easy for customers and employees to integrate
calling in a way that is very cost-effective. If Skype is integrated into a VoIP then it uses
that VoIP’s QoS, otherwise, it utilizes the OS and custom security settings of its own
program. I do know, from personal use, that the QoS is pretty good these days. Jitter and
latency are low, from a system resource point of view, and dropping never happens. In
fact, I almost never get disconnected unless my connection drops or gets overloaded by
something else running in the background.
As to whether that happens in a server environment or on a smartphone? I
cannot say from personal experience. I rarely use it on my cell phone and I’ve never
implemented Skype in a server environment.
I do believe that Skype could be a pretty good replacement, but it definitely
requires some basic VoIP service already built-in OR some kind of custom setup and
installation to really make use of more features that Skype doesn’t provide. For small
businesses under 20 users, this is a PERFECT solution, imho. I think a small business of that
size could really benefit from Skype’s features particularly if they are really needing a lot
of video calling traffic. Video calling is very good on Skype, unless you have crappy
hardware and a crappy internet connection or network.
The cost is nearly negligible, but international calling is seriously not as good unless
you buy subscriptions or premium accounts with a TON of countries and regions. At $9.99
per BUSINESS per month using a Premium account with Skype Manager, the cost is
significantly cheaper even than Vonage. Out of a year, with 10 extensions, you might
have a total of $119.88 ($9.99 * 12 months)? If you buy credit for your employees, then
obviously, that cost will increase.
Out of the Step 1 parameters for this assignment, Skype could not assist 200
extensions well but it is conceivable. Skype does not have:
11
1. Fax services
2. Music on hold
a. This can be modified actually. I do believe it is possible to run a music
player in the background on the environment with which Skype is installed
and do a custom sound integration into Skype using the music player. I’ve
seen it done before, but not aware of the specific steps needed to
achieve it.
Pricing & Features
Skype offers many services without the need for paying for it. In fact, the only time
you need to pay for something is when you’re making calls on landlines or mobile
phones. If you use Skype to Skype, its entirely free, regardless of the delivery system used
(voice, webcam, text chat, or full data). (Microsoft Co., 2014)
Skype uses a system called Credit to help people pay for calling mobile phones and
landlines. The pricing is as follows:
1. $10.00 worth of Skype Credit (Microsoft Co., 2014)
2. $20.00 worth of Skype Credit (Microsoft Co., 2014)
3. Pay as you go plans for the US start at 1.7 cents per minute. Countries have
specific pay as you go plans.
4. Premium accounts are advanced accounts for those who want the best that
Skype has to offer. This account upgrade costs $9.99 per month. It adds the group
video calling, group remote desktop assistance/management, removes
advertising completely, gives you live chat support, and unlimited calling to a
country or region of your choice. (Microsoft Co., 2014)
5. Subscriptions are available for every country, meaning that each country has its
own cost.
a. For example, if you were to buy a subscription just for making phone calls
to non-Skype devices, such as a landline or mobile phone, then you
would pay a minimum of $2.99 per month for unlimited nationwide calling.
If you wanted to include all of North America, it would cost $7.99 per
month. If you included unlimited International calling, it would cost $13.99
per month. (Microsoft Co., 2014)
12
b. Interestingly enough, if you use Skype mobile apps for smartphones, calls
are free between cell phones as long as both users have Skype app
installed on their device.
Skype utilizes a web-based management tool for businesses called Skype
Manager. It allows the administrators to properly control who, where, how, what, and
why something happens with their Skype account, credits, access, and availability. If you
have an existing SIP-enabled PBX, you can use Skype Connect, which is a feature
integrated into Skype Manager that allows you to use Skype in reducing the cost of VoIP
on an enterprise level. (Microsoft Co., 2014)
The following features are considered Standard for Skype and Skype for Business
using Skype Manager: (Microsoft Co., 2014)
1. Call Features: Skype to Skype calls, local, national, and international calling at
customized rates, group calling, Skype numbers (an individual number assigned
to your specific Skype account or Microsoft account), call forwarding, caller ID,
roaming system, and click to call.
2. Video Features: Interpersonal video calls and group video calls (this is only
available with a premium subscription).
3. Messaging Features: Video messaging, instant messaging, SMS, voice messaging,
GroupMe (which is a sharing feature from your mobile device using Skype app).
4. Sharing Features: File and data sharing, remote desktop
assistance/management, group remote desktop assistance/management, and
contact information sharing.
5. Other Features: Skype to Facebook (which automatically connects your
Facebook account to your Skype account so you can view and respond to
everything from Facebook right in Skype), Skype WiFi (which utilizes technology to
implement WiFi Hotspots and find them more easily), Skype for
Outlook.com/Outlook, and Skype Buttons (which allows you to add Skype
features to a website or blog so a user can call or IM you right from there).
6. Skype cannot replace emergency assistance (911) on a mobile device, landline,
or normal VoIP system. At the bottom of EVERY page on Skype is this disclaimer
readily seen and coherent. (Microsoft Co., 2014)
13
7. Skype uses DCCA and the latest encryption methods for protecting both the
received and transmitted data, regardless of type, and provides encryption for
the user’s account. (Microsoft Co., 2014)
In conclusion, it is apparent to me that Vonage Business Solutions provides the single
best cost versus features ratio of all the providers, including Skype. It gives you the best
bang for your buck and I think that as a corporate/small business solution, that is exactly
what people need. VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol providers certainly are very
competitive and intensely dedicated to providing exceptional services for businesses. It
has been very interesting to see what kind of intriguing or creativ e ways that they
implement certain aspects of their technologies. All in all, I believe that VoIP is a clear
alternative to normal POTS/PSTN service for all companies, large and small, for the
current and the future.

Unit 11 - Assignment B - Babeli

  • 1. Lianna Babeli | Data and Networks | March 18, 2014 Hands-On Project DATA AND NETWORKS FINAL ASSIGNMENT
  • 2. 1 In this report, I shall give a comparison to three of the currently most trusted sources of VoIP services that require a payment plan, subscription, or other form of shareware-style subscription. (PRWeb, 2014) I will then compare Skype to the three as it is a free VoIP service. There will be information in general about each company, including quality of service, general overview, and any personal experiences/knowledge that I might have. I will provide a financial comparison using the pricing information provided by each company as to how cost effective it is for a small business to setup, install, operate, and maintain a VoIP service. Vonage (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014) Vonage offers true virtual and cloud PBX/VoIP services on a professional level that is trusted worldwide. It integrates both virtual and cloud services with physical services and requires minimal interruption of business. They have no phone requirement. They offer all services using any phone system. There seems to be no actual plans, simply choosing an Unlimited Extension plan is all you have, plus choosing extra Virtual PBX and Metered extensions and add-on features. I could not find any current QoS information on their website or online. They give their services without any setup or activation fees, no physical hardware fees, and no maintenance costs beyond the monthly payment plan. This company has a VERY simple planning system and a very cost-effective management system. $39.99 per month is most often what you pay and that includes all the Standard Features, unlimited extensions, free calling internally with USA and Canada calling, extremely cheap Long Distance services, and discounted prices on some physical devices for networking and IP phones. The only other costs involved are adding Add-On Features and possibly buying licensed routers, IP phones, and other hardware into the pricing of your initial investment. A single year for any sized company with t he Standard Features only is $479.88 ($39.99 * 12 months) per year. Adding call monitoring and call recording brings the price tag up to $1,679.64 ($39.99 + $49.99 + $49.99 * 12 months) per year. All in all, Vonage offers extremely cheap VoIP services with incredible features and keeps things simple stupid with its inherent one plan modular design. Pricing & Features 1. Virtual PBX Extensions: $14.99 per month per extension, requires at least one unlimited extension and one company number already possessed by the company through Vonage. (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014)
  • 3. 2 2. Metered Extensions: $14.99 per month per extension plus $3 cents per minute, requires at least one unlimited extension and one company number already possessed by the company through Vonage. (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014) 3. Unlimited Extensions: $39.99 per month per extension, minimum order requirement is one unlimited extension and a company number; multi-line discounts are available (would need to contact Vonage for actual pricing information on these discounts). (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014) 4. International Long Distance: available for as little as $1 cent per minute to most European countries up to maybe $10 cents to most Asian and Middle Eastern countries, while African and South American countries are between $1 cent and $20 cents via a landline. Most mobile prices are between double and five times the normal cost of landline prices, depending on the country. This is an added feature available to all types of extension plans. (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014) 5. Standard Features for all extension plans: (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014) a. Admin/User Portals: Manage everything from the account anywhere. b. Phone Management: call announce, call conferencing, call continuity, call forwarding, call hold, call logs, call park, call pass, call screening, call transfer, call waiting, caller ID block, caller ID, click to call me, click to dial, custom tagging, dashboard, directory assistance, do not disturb, dynamic caller ID, emergency assistance, follow me, music on hold, never miss a call, set caller ID, simultaneous ring, virtual receptionist, and voicemail services (visual voicemail, voicemail to email, customizable greetings, secure remote access) c. Cell phone integration (non-smartphones, iOS, and Android); free applications d. Cloud PBX e. Local number portability f. Multiple devices on one extension g. Microsoft Outlook integration h. Seven-digit dialing i. Unified inbox (email, fax, and voice) j. Online backup and storage k. Work from anywhere
  • 4. 3 l. Desktop: a specific application provided for free by Vonage Business Solutions as a way to integrate all their services into one place. Available for Mac OS X 10.4 or later and Windows XP SP2 (all versions), Vista (all versions), 7 (all versions), and 8 (all versions). {This is an optional application, it is NOT require for Vonage services} 6. Add-on Features; these cost a specific amount per unique feature. Most are added monthly expenses. (Vonage Business Solutions, 2014) a. Advanced Phone Management: Call grouping ($4.99 per month), call monitoring ($49.99 per month per account), call queues ($14.99 per month plus $3 cents per minute), company call recording services ($49.99 per month), conference bridging ($14.99 per month plus $3 cents a minute), on-demand call recording ($4.99 per month per extension), paging group ($4.99 per month per group), virtual mailbox ($4.99 per month), and voicemail transcription ($4.99 per month per extension). b. Local Numbers ($9.99 per month) c. Main Company Numbers ($9.99 per month) d. Paperless Fax ($14.99 per month) e. Toll-Free Numbers ($39.99 per month) RingCentral (RingCentral, 2014) RingCentral offers true virtual and cloud PBX/VoIP services on a professional level that is trusted worldwide. It integrates both virtual and cloud services with physical services and requires minimal interruption of business. It seems that they do not have a specific phone type requirement for using their services. They offer all services using any phone system. For all packages and products, there seems to be no hardware costs, no setup or activation fees, and you don’t require a contract, even though contracts are available. RingCentral guarantees the highest VoIP quality of service with its own QoS agency and cover a wide variety of routers available. It even provides a QoS test with your current connection to see how well you would do by simulating multiple phone calls across their VoIP service. I’ll use their Office Premium package plan on an annual payment plan for 10 users/extensions: $34.99 per month per user ($34.99 * 10 users/extensions * 12 months) gives a total of $4,198.80 per year. I spoke to my Mother who has experience with

  • 9. 8 c. Multipoint Mobile and Desktop HD video conferencing: web sharing and up to 25 participants local, national, or international d. Online meetings for mobile and desktop: web sharing Jive (Jive Communications, Inc., 2014) Jive provides enterprise-level quality VoIP services using Virtual PBX and proper Quality of Service infrastructure. They offer no cost installation, maintenance, and setup. They provide everything a company needs to have a fully secure, integrated VoIP service with minimal business interruption. Their QoS is designed using a combination of factors: physical network separation, logical network separation, and class-of-service prioritization. This is possibly the most comprehensive of all the VoIP services I have seen. Other than not finding pricing or plan information for their Enterprise-level offerings, it had everything I would need to start up a VoIP service within a company and KNOW without question what will happen, how it will happen, what does it mean for the company, and why they do it. Since the company does not provide any financial details concerning their Enterprise-level (above 100 users) services, I will use their Small Business offering. For the requested 10 extensions, the minimal cost for one year of service would be ($23.95 * 10 users/extensions/devices * 12 months) gives a total of $2,874.00 per year. If each user/extension had multiple devices, then the cost would go up exponentially. Say if we added a desktop and a laptop plus a smartphone to every extension: $23.95 * 40 users/extensions/devices * 12 months which gives a total of $11,496.00 per year. This is easily the most expensive option out of everything I have reviewed thus far. In fact, I might consider this ridiculous even for enterprises. The ROI in this would be ridiculous for companies over 100 users. Imagine if you had a company with 5,000 employees across five sites. If we simply went with the Tier 5 pricing, as Enterprise pricing is unavailable, that would be $19.99 * 20,000 (5,000 users/phone extensions, 5,000 desktops, 5,000 smartphones, 5,000 laptops) * 12 months gives a total of $4,797,600.00 per year! That is beyond comprehension! I hope that their enterprise pricing is much more competitive and financially fiscal than that because as of right now, I would go somewhere else for the sheer cost if I had an enterprise. I actually had a conversation with a customer support employee via live chat while I was finishing up my references for this essay and he told me directly that Enterprise pricing is definitely not available to the public. He was very informative and very polite.

  • 11. 10 Enterprise Offering (Jive Communications, Inc., 2014) I could not find a single thing on pricing or individual plans as with Small Business. It appears that the only way to find out any pricing information is to contact the company directly. Skype (Microsoft Co., 2014) Skype is a completely free VoIP service which offers comprehensive features for non-business users and even some business users to utilize VoIP services without the tremendous cost involved. In comparison to the paid services, Skype is a relatively decent system that makes it extremely easy for customers and employees to integrate calling in a way that is very cost-effective. If Skype is integrated into a VoIP then it uses that VoIP’s QoS, otherwise, it utilizes the OS and custom security settings of its own program. I do know, from personal use, that the QoS is pretty good these days. Jitter and latency are low, from a system resource point of view, and dropping never happens. In fact, I almost never get disconnected unless my connection drops or gets overloaded by something else running in the background. As to whether that happens in a server environment or on a smartphone? I cannot say from personal experience. I rarely use it on my cell phone and I’ve never implemented Skype in a server environment. I do believe that Skype could be a pretty good replacement, but it definitely requires some basic VoIP service already built-in OR some kind of custom setup and installation to really make use of more features that Skype doesn’t provide. For small businesses under 20 users, this is a PERFECT solution, imho. I think a small business of that size could really benefit from Skype’s features particularly if they are really needing a lot of video calling traffic. Video calling is very good on Skype, unless you have crappy hardware and a crappy internet connection or network. The cost is nearly negligible, but international calling is seriously not as good unless you buy subscriptions or premium accounts with a TON of countries and regions. At $9.99 per BUSINESS per month using a Premium account with Skype Manager, the cost is significantly cheaper even than Vonage. Out of a year, with 10 extensions, you might have a total of $119.88 ($9.99 * 12 months)? If you buy credit for your employees, then obviously, that cost will increase. Out of the Step 1 parameters for this assignment, Skype could not assist 200 extensions well but it is conceivable. Skype does not have:
  • 12. 11 1. Fax services 2. Music on hold a. This can be modified actually. I do believe it is possible to run a music player in the background on the environment with which Skype is installed and do a custom sound integration into Skype using the music player. I’ve seen it done before, but not aware of the specific steps needed to achieve it. Pricing & Features Skype offers many services without the need for paying for it. In fact, the only time you need to pay for something is when you’re making calls on landlines or mobile phones. If you use Skype to Skype, its entirely free, regardless of the delivery system used (voice, webcam, text chat, or full data). (Microsoft Co., 2014) Skype uses a system called Credit to help people pay for calling mobile phones and landlines. The pricing is as follows: 1. $10.00 worth of Skype Credit (Microsoft Co., 2014) 2. $20.00 worth of Skype Credit (Microsoft Co., 2014) 3. Pay as you go plans for the US start at 1.7 cents per minute. Countries have specific pay as you go plans. 4. Premium accounts are advanced accounts for those who want the best that Skype has to offer. This account upgrade costs $9.99 per month. It adds the group video calling, group remote desktop assistance/management, removes advertising completely, gives you live chat support, and unlimited calling to a country or region of your choice. (Microsoft Co., 2014) 5. Subscriptions are available for every country, meaning that each country has its own cost. a. For example, if you were to buy a subscription just for making phone calls to non-Skype devices, such as a landline or mobile phone, then you would pay a minimum of $2.99 per month for unlimited nationwide calling. If you wanted to include all of North America, it would cost $7.99 per month. If you included unlimited International calling, it would cost $13.99 per month. (Microsoft Co., 2014)
  • 13. 12 b. Interestingly enough, if you use Skype mobile apps for smartphones, calls are free between cell phones as long as both users have Skype app installed on their device. Skype utilizes a web-based management tool for businesses called Skype Manager. It allows the administrators to properly control who, where, how, what, and why something happens with their Skype account, credits, access, and availability. If you have an existing SIP-enabled PBX, you can use Skype Connect, which is a feature integrated into Skype Manager that allows you to use Skype in reducing the cost of VoIP on an enterprise level. (Microsoft Co., 2014) The following features are considered Standard for Skype and Skype for Business using Skype Manager: (Microsoft Co., 2014) 1. Call Features: Skype to Skype calls, local, national, and international calling at customized rates, group calling, Skype numbers (an individual number assigned to your specific Skype account or Microsoft account), call forwarding, caller ID, roaming system, and click to call. 2. Video Features: Interpersonal video calls and group video calls (this is only available with a premium subscription). 3. Messaging Features: Video messaging, instant messaging, SMS, voice messaging, GroupMe (which is a sharing feature from your mobile device using Skype app). 4. Sharing Features: File and data sharing, remote desktop assistance/management, group remote desktop assistance/management, and contact information sharing. 5. Other Features: Skype to Facebook (which automatically connects your Facebook account to your Skype account so you can view and respond to everything from Facebook right in Skype), Skype WiFi (which utilizes technology to implement WiFi Hotspots and find them more easily), Skype for Outlook.com/Outlook, and Skype Buttons (which allows you to add Skype features to a website or blog so a user can call or IM you right from there). 6. Skype cannot replace emergency assistance (911) on a mobile device, landline, or normal VoIP system. At the bottom of EVERY page on Skype is this disclaimer readily seen and coherent. (Microsoft Co., 2014)
  • 14. 13 7. Skype uses DCCA and the latest encryption methods for protecting both the received and transmitted data, regardless of type, and provides encryption for the user’s account. (Microsoft Co., 2014) In conclusion, it is apparent to me that Vonage Business Solutions provides the single best cost versus features ratio of all the providers, including Skype. It gives you the best bang for your buck and I think that as a corporate/small business solution, that is exactly what people need. VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol providers certainly are very competitive and intensely dedicated to providing exceptional services for businesses. It has been very interesting to see what kind of intriguing or creativ e ways that they implement certain aspects of their technologies. All in all, I believe that VoIP is a clear alternative to normal POTS/PSTN service for all companies, large and small, for the current and the future.
