8. Wild Child is another girly chick flick movie to add to any girl’s film collection. As a girl myself this movie is a hit with the young teens as they can relate to
it more. It is about a spoilt 16 year old American girl who loves to party in her LA mansion (played by Emma Roberts) and gets everything she wants, but
when her father has had enough of her poor behaviour he sends her off to an English boarding school to straighten her up. Poppy is probably what most
young teens want to be with a ‘popular’ teenager, with designer clothes and the group of friends but Poppy soon learns she would have to change if she
wants to make friends.
The script was written by Lucy Dahl, although the production company website listed two more writers as well, Kate Kondell and Daisy Donovan (who
plays Grefellish the PE mistress) The film was directed by Nick Moore. When Poppy arrives at school she soon stands out from the crowd with her
designer uniform and short skirt and obviously her snobby attitude. She finds it hard making friends but found eyed up for the head mistresses’ son. She
and her roommates did everything in the book to try and get Poppy kicked out of school and get her sent back to her LA life but the head mistress was
not giving in like any normal person would and kept her in school. Soon when Poppy realises her mother went to the school (who died in a car crash
when Poppy was young) so she turned herself around and started to behave.
Poppy had her ups and downs during the film but as any chick flicks ends, she gets the ‘hot’ lad and everything works out good, which is predictable in
any girly movie. This film is always a favourite with the girls, and I would personally say it's better than some chick flicks I’ve seen even though most
films of this genre are very similar.
The camera shots used in this film are used well and they include medium shots, close ups, long shots, two shots and over the shoulder shot. Medium
shots are used to show the top half of a person’s body and part of the background setting, it is used for the distance of which two people normally stand
from each other; this shot is used a lot during the film for example when Poppy gets out the car at her new school and is stood looking towards it.
Close up shots tend to suggest intimacy and emotion which could be friendship or conflict but they are also used to draw attention to an object that has
significance in the narrative, and is used when Poppy and her friend are looking at the website about her new school and the shot clearly shows their
expressions. Long shots are usually unemotional and are mainly used to show the setting or a large amount of people in one scene, an example from
the film would be when all the girls are playing field hockey and you can see their full body, more than one person can be seen in these shots and you
can see the setting that they are in. A two shot is when two people share the camera together usually a medium shot length distance and in the film this
is used when Poppy is getting close with the headmistress’ son on their day out. They also use good camera angles in this movie, and one stood out to
me when a conversation is happening from a second floor window with someone who is stood on the ground below it and the camera moves to as if you
was the person looking up or looking down which may give some of the audience that they feel like that they’re in the conversation or observing it which
is connotation as they might feel the anger one of the characters may be feeling. The editing of the film is done good and the film is put together well, and
when there is scenes been filmed in a car travelling it does it as where the character is sat in a car and you can get a sense of their surroundings.

11. Analysis of the film questionnaire
From doing the questionnaires it has showed me that the film wild child is an all girls film with hardly no boys have seen
the film which is predictable. It also shows that the age range was mostly older teens who have seen the film, even
though they was a lot younger when the film first came out which prove the age for the film in a wider range. When asked
the question what was their favourite film the most popular and frequent answer was comedy, with some also saying
romantic and horror movies, this is showing what most teen girls like to watch, and my film Wild Child is a romantic
comedy. Also the genres horror and comedy can appeal to anyone, like boys and older people. I also found out from the
question how often teen girls watch movies and the most popular answer was often, with other people saying
sometimes and always, this is showing that their age group like to watch film a lot which would show to film companies
who to aim more of their films at. In my questionnaire I found out where the most popular place to watch a film is, which
is internet websites like Netflix and putlocker, this would bring more money In for Netflix and leave the sales of dvd’s a lot
lower. A few people said they also watched them at home on the tv , like sky movies or go to the cinema but that
sometimes works out the more expensive option as that’s why I think internet websites are more popular now as some of
them are free. This links in with where most people hear or see about new films as a few people said on the internet, as a
lot of young people spend a lot of their time on the internet this would be a good place to advertise them. Another popular
answer was tv adverts, as majority of the people in the UK own a tv this would be a good option.
When I started asking questions about the film Wild Child, the first question I asked was who was their favourite character
which was of course Poppy as she was the lead role and a popular teen actress. I also found out that what makes a
person want to go see a film the most is the story lone but with some saying the genre and the actors or actresses staring
in the film. I also found out that all the people who took part in my questionnaire would recommend this film to someone
else. It also showed that the film met most peoples expectations they would watch it again. In conclusion I think they
rated the film in a good way.

A film distributor is responsible for marketing a film and setting a release date
and having an audience to watch the film. There is hundreds of film distribution
companies across the world which include 20th century fox, Lions gate,
momentum pictures, paramount pictures, Walt Disney, Sony pictures, universal
pictures and warner bro’s. these companies are some of biggest companies
and are well known.
20th century fox is part of the six major film studios and distributors in America
and has been going for the past 80 years. The studio is massively credited for
titanic and avatar as they was the highest and second highest grossing films
with box office. Paramount pictures is also part of the big six film studios of
America and is also a member of the motion picture association of America.
Paramount is America’s oldest film studio founded in 1912.
My case study film Wild Child was distributed by Universal pictures. This
company is also part of the ‘Big six’ companies in America and is part of the
motion picture association of America. Universal is the 4th oldest film studio in
the world. Working title will of teamed up with universal for this film because
Wild Child was one of the first younger generation films that they had created
so universal distributes all genres of film so it was a good idea to team up with
them. Seven of universal films had made box office records across the years.

13. Film marketing
The advertising of a film is known as film promotion or film marketing and the people who are responsible for this are the
distribution company, so–called because they distribute (give out) the films to the cinemas and distribute the promotional
material around the country.
The way in which a film is promoted can have a huge effect on whether or not it is successful. Films are expensive to make
and if the public do not buy tickets at the box office to see the film, a lot of money will be lost.
Film promotion generally includes press releases, advertising campaigns, merchandising and media, and interviews with the
key people involved with the making of the film, like actors and directors. Most films get advertised in the cinemas during the
adverts before the film they are about to see comes on. As with all businesses it is an important part of any release because of
the inherent high financial risk; film studios will invest in expensive marketing campaigns to maximize revenue early in the
release cycle. Marketing budgets tend to equal about half the production budget. Publicity is generally handled by the
distributor and exhibitors.

Discrimination is one ethical issue that is
one of the biggest in the industry. in the
past you never saw mixed raced lead
actors/ actresses or many of that race in
any films. You do see more these days
even lead roles like will Smith for
example but there is still some
discrimination going on. There is also
disability discrimination as it is very rare
you see a actor with a disability as a lead
character.
Animal cruelty during film making
is also one that brings up a lot of
conversations. There is known to
of been quite a few deaths of
animals from making movies and
TV shows, the animals have not
been looked after the set has
closed for the day and the animals
have been made to do things that
has put a strain on them resulting
in accidents and death.
Copyright is a big issue in the film
industry. Legal protection is advised so
another company can’t use the original
material that a company may of filmed
the preparation behind it.
Employees rights is an important one.
All employees have rights in the
workplace and these include; a safe
working environment, pay during sick
leave, the right to request flexible
working, training time, breaks and
many more. They will have a contract
that they would of signed that will of
agreed with all the rights they will be
given.
Health and safety is a legal issue. All the
sights used by the companies have to
have a health and safety check first
before they do any filming to make sure
it is a safe working environment.
Film and TV producers have a
responsibility to protect
children and young people
from unsuitable content as well
as their rights of freedom of
expression and freedom to
receive information. Children
under the age of 16 can not
take time out of school to be in
a film or show and can only do
certain hours.

15. Legal and ethical issues in Wild Child
in Wild Child the most obvious ethical issue is that the cast is majority girls
with an exception of 2 or 3 boys featured during the film. The boy featured
most in the film is a love interest to the lead character and is the stereotype
British boy sweetheart as all American girls think they are. The lead character
Poppy who thought she had it all in America changed when she got to
England as a person and stops the wild girl behaviour she had in America. In
different films it seems as though when a character with a bad attitude or
behaviour move to a different country or state that they realise that they was
wrong and they turn their lives around for the better and that is what Poppy
did in the film Wild Child. The love interest that Poppy had with Freddie is the
classic rom com that is aimed for the teenage girl audience that they wanted.
In the film Wild Child there is no racism or disability involved or animal cruelty,
it mostly just gives the stereotype of different girls personality's. During the film
you also see that the girls play a sport, lacrosse, which they do competitively
and it is a stereotype that boarding school students are good at sports and are
competitive at it, which shows that in the film. I would also say that the lighter
that was used often in the film played a part towards the age rating of the film
as they are known for lighting cigarette's so they are harmful and dangerous
as this one causes a fire. But overall the film didn’t have any major legal or
ethical issues that stood out a lot as the film was made to the age group
satisfaction.

16. Active and passive audience theories
Passive: easily manipulated, complaint, weak willed, followers, controlled and dominated
Hypodermic syringe model – short term ( copycat) whatever they saw on the screen they would do or copy
Problems with the model: ignores peoples free will and personality, ignores environmental situation and their upbringing, doesn’t consider peoples
moral compass and suggests that the audience is passive
Inoculation /desensitisation model: suggests that long term exposure to media messages make them immune to them
Problems with the model: certain things becoming normalised by the media( not everyone is violent though), people have free willed on what they want
to do, ignores changes in culture, your personality and upbringing are much more likely to be influential on your behaviour than media is, treats the
audience passive
The cultivation analysis: long term effect theory- this theory is concerned with the long term effects on particular ideological representations on beliefs
and values that we hold.
Ideology: a system of ideas and beliefs promoted by dominate groups (governments, corporations, cultural groups) to reinforce their power. They
reinforce the stereotypes through advertising for example
Developed in 1930s, all audience members react in the same way, all passively receive messages, media affects thoughts and behaviours
Active: engaged, involved, responsive, free willed, in control
The two step flow Katz & lazarsfeld: developed in 1940’s, it concluded that media alone wasn’t that influential in affecting the audience’s behaviour or
attitude but part of a larger system of situated culture.
The audience usually received the media message through a ‘opinion leader’ – individuals that pay close attention to the media and filter information to
family and friends so people receive the message without consuming the text. Its treating the audience as active.
Uses and gratification model: developed in 1974 and then further developed in 1987 to identify the 4 needs that were fulfilled by viewing television, it
suggests the audience makes active use of the media to fulfil their needs. Escapism/ entertainment, information/ surveillance, personal identity
and social interaction
Problems with the model: it is simplistic on how an audience with a text, it ignores demographic, social and cultural factors, it assumes that the media
identify these needs on behalf of the audience and meet them

17. Reception theory - developed by Stuart hall, was a reaction against the hypodermic syringe model and inoculation model which has been
repeatedly dismissed for assuming the audience is passive and not using the media. It’s the idea that an active audience has to decode the
meaning within text, therefore different audiences will do it in different ways
Dominant or preferred, negotiated and oppositional
Preferred reading- when the audience accepts the dominant reading of the text this is usually if the text reflects the ideas and beliefs of the reader.
Oppositional reading- when someone makes a conscious rejection of the preferred meaning
Negotiated reading- when someone understands the meaning but it doesn’t relate to them so it is no interest of them to decode the meaning
Pick and mix theory : an audience who uses texts, ignoring some aspects of them and choosing some aspects that suit them at the time, we
create our own viewing schedule now because of on demand and catch up, new ways of consuming TV e.g. Netflix
Marxism- a Marxist perspective would consider how much of what we read and do is just not monitored but closely controlled. The view on Marxist
critics is that the media is controlled by those in power, politically and economically:

Persuades us to accept the imbalance of political and economic power as right or natural, keeping the everyday people in place

18. BBFC- the British board of film classification is an independent company which has classified cinema films since 1912 and
videos/ DVD’s since 1984. They rate films to the age which the experts think is suitable for viewers to watch as some
scenes may be disturbing or too mature for the younger viewers. My film study is Wild Child which is rated a 12 because of
moderate bad language and moderate sex references which I think is a good age as that’s the age these things began to
get introduced to that age group.
Ofcom- Ofcom is the communications regulator. They regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles,
postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. They make sure that people in the UK get the best
from their communications services and are protected from scams and sharp practices, while ensuring that competition can
thrive.
ASA- The Advertising Standards Authority is the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media. They apply the
Advertising Codes, which are written by the Committees of Advertising Practice. Their work includes acting on complaints
and proactively checking the media to take action against misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements.

19. Questionnaire analysis
The first question about how much sympathy did you have for poppy when she was getting the blame for setting
the school on fire, the overall answer was that the majority of the people did have sympathy for Poppy as she got
portrayed as she was starting to realise how much her new attitude had changed her and seeing on the film that
she did put the fire out and the audience got a very good impression that she didn’t start it so when she was getting
all the blame they felt sorry for her.
The second question about how does the film represent how the girls look in the film e.g. the perfect women and
how are the other girls coming across, the overall answer for this was that Poppy was the perfect girl stereo type
with the blonde hair and slim figure and short skirts and even when she turns her hair brown, she was still seen as
the ideal women. Kate in the film comes across as the sensible smart girl, Drippy is the girl that is different with a
weird edgy side and Harriet gets portrayed as the girl who thinks she’s everything as she’s head girl and comes
across stuck up.
The third question was how does the film portray the “American wild child” behaviour at the beginning of the film.
The overall answer for this was the Malibu mansion with a large group of teenagers drinking and trashing the
house and also jumping off the cliff showing their wild side.
The forth question is all the characters are quite young in the film so are they presented acting childish, the overall
answer was that they acted older than they are as they do things like drinking which older people do and they act in
a more mature way.
The fifth question was did Harriet’s stuck up attitude make you have a hatred towards her, the overall answer was
that the way she was portrayed the audience had a automatic hatred as she was the stuck up “bad girl” and she
was the one that set the school on fire and made Poppy get the blame.

21. The film Wild child was certificated a 12, because of moderate bad language and moderate sex references
throughout the film. As the film begins the first spoken word in the first scene is “shit” which is classed as
moderate bad language, and that word is used a few times throughout the film in appropriate places. I think the
age 12 rating on the language is good as 12 year olds and above would sometimes use that language or heard
other people use it so it’s not introducing anything new/ bad to them and they would know what it means. Also in
the film there is moderate sex references used as when Poppy speaks about how many people she had “slept
with” in America, and there is sight of a mock phone box escort card featuring a picture of a girl in school uniform
and the caption 'Naughty Schoolgirl Harriet‘ who is one of the characters in which they are just doing it as a joke.
The 12 age rating on that is appropriate because that is the age 12 year olds and above begin to get introduced
to it and they’ll understand what it means. Also during the film there implied teen drinking and a character falling
over from being drunk so it would show the young viewers it’s not the best thing. A teen also plays with a
cigarette lighter which causes the fire so it shows that they are dangerous to use. The certificate of a 12 is
appropriate due to all the reasons above.
