verse, ritual verse, and praise poems for rulers or
other prominent people
● The “praise” singers, bards sometimes known as
“griots”, tell their stories with a musical backgrounds.
● Also recited, but often sung, are love songs, work
songs, children’s songs, epigrams, and riddles.
The purpose are very varied like bringing fertility, rain, good harvest; warding off disease, natural calamities, evil spirits; helping with social decisions and judgments; commemorating important events and making political statements.
