Undocumented students in the US face many challenges, especially regarding their ability to attend and pay for college. Most undocumented students have grown up in the US and only learn of their status when applying for college. While they can attend public schools through high school, entering and paying for college is difficult without financial aid options. Proposed bills like the Dream Act aim to allow undocumented students who meet residency requirements to qualify for in-state tuition and financial aid at public colleges and universities in their state. To navigate the college application process, undocumented students are advised to seek help from supportive individuals on campus.

2. Immigration Immigration has been happening since years back. First generation immigrants living in the Unites States has quadrupled. Immigrant population has grown so drastically from 9.6 million in 1970 to about 38 million in 2007. In these numbers children of immigrants are included, because according to the government them too are consider “illegal” as they referred.

3. This brings me to undocumented students ( the children of immigrants). They face all kinds of challenges once they reach 12 grade when they find out that they are not like their friends they don’t have that 9 digit number that will hold back from doing so much.

4. The way an undocumented student grows Most undocumented students all they know is the U.S. Most children don’t know they are undocumented till they hit grade 12 or sometimes depending if their parents are open about the subject.

5. Education Undocumented children are guaranteed an education in US public schools through grade 12 and after that, they face obstacles. The problems start when they try to enroll into College. In California they can enter College registered under an AB540 student.

6. More to the problem.. Applying for financial aid is one of the biggest problem. Specially for those accepted into a four year university. Admission, tuition, and financial aid will always be part of their struggles.

7. Who can help? It’s better when a students do all the process with a friend, because it’s a lot easier to follow through and not get discourage. Look for someone in campus who you feel safe telling them your status.

8. >Try to be open minded where ever you go, because you might meet some wonderful people that might be able to help and even be your sponsor. > Join clubs or programs where you can find different resources that can help you during your college experience.

The Bill Dream Act is the bill divided in AB 130 which will allow students that meet in-state tuition requirements to for and receive specified financial aid programs administered by California’s public colleges and universities. AB 131 will allow students that meet the in-state tuition requirements to apply for and receive Cal Grants by California’s public colleges and universities.

11. Requirements Secondary school attendance in California for three or more years. One of those years had to have been at a California High School. Graduation from a secondary school. Apply for an affidavit with the college or university.
