This is a presentation that looks at some of the technical problems faced by the underwater photographer followed by a series of photographs taken while scuba diving in St. Barthelemy in March 2013.

• 1. The underwater environment: moisture;
current, shy, difficult to find, and mobile
subjects; visibility.
• 2. scuba diving safety: pressure
equalization, depth, time, ascent rate, air
supply, and your buddy(s).
• 3. Light at depth – how to photograph a
blue-green world.

3. Photographic Techniques To
Render Full Color Underwater
• 1. Underwater Strobe or flash. Problems: bulky
equipment, backscatter, range.
• 2. Ambient light camera settings compensation.
Problem: tough to get it right as depth and
distance to subject change.
• 3. Home computer editing and color correction.
