Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.

2. Prostatitis, an ailment often affecting men under
50, is becoming increasingly common in younger
demographics, with a significant portion of men
between 25 to 40 years experiencing varying
degrees of the condition.
It raises a critical question: How does one contract
prostatitis without being sexually active?
3. While prostatitis is commonly
associated with sexual activity
due to the prostate’s
susceptibility to congestion from
frequent sexual encounters,
which can compromise venous
return and immunity, it’s not the
sole pathway to this condition.
For sexually inactive men,
prostatitis can still occur, and its
origins are multifaceted.
4.
5. 1. Acute Bacterial Prostatitis: This type is
generally caused by bacterial infections
from common pathogens like E. coli and
gonococcus. Infections typically arise from
ascending urethral infection, a bloodstream
infection, or urine reflux into the prostate
ducts.
6. 2. Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis: Similar to the acute form but
caused by different pathogens such as Staphylococcus and
Enterococcus, this chronic condition often stems from recurrent
lower urinary tract infections or untreated acute bacterial
prostatitis, with pathogens entering the prostate via urinary
reflux.
7. 3. Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome:
Also referred to as chronic non-
bacterial prostatitis, the precise
causes are still under debate.
Potential culprits may include
less common microorganisms,
immune responses, or even
psychological factors.
8. 4. Asymptomatic Prostatitis: Patients typically show no
symptoms, and diagnoses often occur during evaluations for
other conditions. Psychological stress and immune
dysfunction may play roles in this type of prostatitis.
9. Interestingly, a lack of sexual activity
can also precipitate prostatitis. The
prostate gland's primary function is to
produce prostate fluid, a seminal
component. Long periods of sexual
abstinence can prevent the regular
expulsion of this fluid, leading to
prostatitis and symptoms akin to
urinary tract infections.
10. Notably, prolonged abstinence may not
only lead to prostatitis but can also
trigger urinary issues like frequent
urination and painful urination, and
may even contribute to sexual
dysfunction. In severe cases, it can
affect sperm motility, potentially
causing infertility. Thus, a balanced
sexual routine is recommended,
avoiding both extremes of frequency.
11. For those diagnosed with prostatitis, active
treatment is crucial to prevent more severe
health issues. Acute prostatitis often responds
well to antibiotics such as quinolones and
cephalosporins. Alpha-blockers can also provide
relief from urinary discomfort. For chronic forms,
traditional Chinese medicine, exemplified by the
Diuretic and Anti-inflammatory Pill, offers a
holistic approach, targeting inflammation and
promoting prostate health with its herbal
composition.
12. In conclusion,
prostatitis is not
solely a
byproduct of
sexual activity.
Men must recognize
the varied origins of
prostatitis and
address them through
lifestyle adjustments
and appropriate
treatments to prevent
and manage this
condition effectively.
