Understanding Culture, Faith and Diversity in Patient Care Management Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable This session will explore the experiences of three members in our community with differing cultures, ethnicity and faith beliefs when seeking and receiving healthcare assistance. Discussion will include but not be limited to, applying for and receiving insurance coverage, making appointments, language and interpreter services, respect for cultural norms, understanding of medication regimes, follow up direction, and general courtesies extended when receiving care. and representative of the Hindu Community in Utah
• Lydia Herrera: Hispanic
Came to the United States from Mexico 20 years
ago and today is the Director of Hildegarde’s Pantry,
a very busy regional food bank
• Suhad Khudhair: Muslim
Highly respected Lead Case manager for the resettlement
clients with Catholic Community services and was herself
a refugee from Iraq ten years ago

understand your personal, cultural and faith
background?
– i.e. medical interpreter, male/female physician
option, dietary restrictions, etc.

describe some notable differences between
your care and theirs—such as quality of care,
time spent with the doctor during a visit,
level of accommodation for
dietary/cultural/faith based needs, etc.

appointment unsure of how to manage your
medication or maintain your health?
– What could providers or the healthcare system
do differently for you to manage your health?
