• Culture plays a vital
role in shaping
physical and
psychological
conceptions of self.
• Culture, interwoven with
other societal influences,
needs to be considered
when working with
participants and their
families in order to provide
an optimal environment to
foster success of kids and
families.

3. Objectives for this session:
• Identify shared understanding of culture
• Discuss “Big C” & “little c” perspectives of culture
• Understand cultural awareness as it relates to participants
• Understand how FitKids360 intervenes in the culture of
obesity in the U.S.

4. What is Culture?
Definition: “The customary beliefs, social forms, and
material traits of a racial, religious or social group also: the
characteristic features of everyday existence (as diversions
or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time.” -
Merriam-Webster

5. Culture…
• Pervades all lives and shapes identity
• Socializes its members on how to perceive the
universe
• Has great influence on individual behavior

Refers to the awareness, knowledge and tools that can be
uncovered, learned and utilized to create effective client
centered services.
