Ironclad beetles have an extremely tough exoskeleton that allows them to survive being stepped on or run over by cars. Scientists have investigated what gives the beetle its strength and found that it can withstand forces up to 39,000 times its body weight. The structure and properties of the beetle's exoskeleton could provide clues for developing new tough and crush-resistant materials for construction and aeronautics applications.
