oads are getting wider, buildings are getting taller and paces are getting
faster. Your city today already looks different than it did yesterday. So in a
time of change or progress like now, its only fair that the print media keeps
up too. This was what let to the birth to the concept of Unbuttoned. A
magazine that keeps up with the bolder and maturer audience of today.
Sex is something of a taboo in India, and we the crew of Unbuttoned find it
a little unjustified. A country like ours whose rich heritage we wear proudly
on our sleeves, we think its time we paid heed to a massive part of that
history. sex has always been such an important part of Indian mythology
and heritage. So here we are, laying down tracks for the topic of Sex and
Fashion.

he sari’s genesis was not as a one piece garment,
it had a perfect offsider before it got influenced by
hap hazardous factors, but it went on growing as a
single piece garment, as it was popularized by the poor
population of our country as it was easily affordable.
The sari saw many morphed versions of itself, from the
influences by the Romans to the varied draping styles,
lengths according to the regions and tribes.
This journey of the sari can be experienced in
stylist Geeta Khanna’s upcoming book
(unnamed) in which she covers the
Indian styles and costumes and how it
has changed throughout the decade.
Our community is running after the
western culture leaving their own
culture and heritage behind, and sari
being a principal part of the lives
of the Indian women has been
surviving till date due to its Vedic
importance.
This is the age when the sari is
being celebrated in India and
Indian designers are working on the sensibility of the
drape.
Geeta Khanna while writing her upcoming book shares
her views on the Indian sari with us.
The meaning of sari
Sari is endless, blank and full of infinite possibilities.
No other garment can offer challenge to a sari. What
can be made of a sari are infinite.
Influence to include sari as a part of the
book
Sari being an important element of the Indian history
had to be a part of the book and high level research
on the sari made her appreciated the sari. Its goodness
facilitates spirituality and it’s a graceful and sexy outfit.
Sari in India
India was a country with temperate climate, so the
natives used to wear very minimal or no clothes. With
the arrival of the foreigners there was a change it the
style of Indian clothing, the foreigners used to make

their clothes with fur and wool as climate up there was
not same as India. The British introduced the petticoat
to the Indian sari, which restricted many styles of
draping, Andhra and Maharastra to be few of them.
There are more than 100 ways to drape a sari varying
from the length to the region of origin to the tribe
which drapes them, just like the Kerala and Karnataka
sari pleats are at the back whereas the most of India
don’t follow the style of draping. The Bengal sari used
to be 11 yards and was draped beautifully, unless
British arrived and manipulated the drape to
that extent which made it no longer exist.
The Bollywood Influence
The Bollywood is a major contributor
to the popularity of the sari as it
is a reflection of the society in
which we live. The journey of
cinema shows the sari and its
transformation through the
ages.
Bollywood is inspired by
different Indian literatures
and we as Indian learn
from the cinema and
literature about our
culture.
Eroticism association with
the sari has woken up
the romance of the 20’s
and its elements and is
making a big comeback.
The sari is not
just limited to the
Bollywood; even
the Hollywood enjoys wearing it.
The cultural effect
Culture is the base of every civilization, basic
culture is found in the rurals of India. “Young
generation is dhurandar and strong, they
have no effect on the culture” says Geeta
according to her a cultural shift needs years
of practices to be changed.
Therefore India with a strong cultural
base and a robust heritage will preserve
their ancestral gift of the sari through
the coming years.

the season of
L VESensuality and Seductiveness are the flavors of this season, whether it be Anupama
Dayal’s latest collection “Kama” or Rupesh Paul’s upcoming movie “Kamasutra 3D”,
both have been highly influenced by our passionate past.
This season sensuality is the new fashion, with
Anupama Dayal’s autumn-winter collection at the Wills
India Fashion Week inspired by the “Kamasutra”.
The collection was mostly bridal but not really for
the wedding ceremony. The silhouettes ranged from
saris teamed with skimpy cholis and corsets. Chanderi,
brocades, zardozi, tangil, gotapatti, hand prints, pearl
embroideries and tassels were the fabrics seen in the
collection. The collection showed a bold Indian bride
with offbeat style and glamour.
“Contrary to popular perception the Kamasutra is not really just
a sex manual. It’s spiritual, holistic. It is an extensive guide on
virtuous and gracious living and elaborates on love, family life.” -
Anupama.
Kama Kamasutra 3D
The art of sex taught by us and followed by the world,
Kamasutra by Vātsyāyana needs no description to
anyone. It has been a part of the society since ages. It
has been printed to books, made into movies and shown
through various forms, out of which the award winning
movie “Kamasutra- a tale of love” (1996) by Mira Nair is
amongst the most controversial Indian bioscope on the
Kamasutra, but who doesn’t loves controversies, Indian
director Rupesh Paul is all set to release his “Kamasutra
3D” starring Sherlyn Chopra this May. “Kamasutra
3D” is amongst the most awaited movie of the year

Who says a Queen needs
a King to lead the Throne?
Popular and Powerful women today seem to be leaving their husbands to
create a name for themselves. Some say, why be a wife when you can be
an unmarried Queen?
woman has always
lived under the shadow
of her husband in India.
However, things seem to be
taking a turn now. The world
is constantly changing. It used
to be a man’s world; maybe
it still is but slowly changed
to the world where a man
cannot succeed without the
help from a woman.
Today women have the
courage to live alone. The
number of unmarried women
or single divorced mothers seems
to be growing. Not just that, young
women today refuse to get married
young, wanting first to establish
themselves as an executive who
can conquer the world alone.
Women have learnt that a dream
can be their own and they don’t
need to be led. Women can lead.
Nobody said it was simple, but
it’s not impossible. The world
went crashing over Gwyneth
Paltrow for her divorce with
famous musician Chris Martin.
The couple was happily married
for many years. However, once
the wedding was off, Gwenyth
went her way. Promoting her
website, popularizing her website
and portraying herself as an
independent, strong executive. Few
years ago, Padma Laxmi divorced
famous booker prizewinner. The
woman established that she wasn’t
married to an older man only for
his money. Padma Laxmi stepped

out to be a very successful model,
standing out in her shoots with
Prabuddha Dasgupta and the Pirelli
Calendar.
Keeping all that apart, Indian
mythology talks about some powerful
women. Durga Ma is the Goddess
of strength. She and the incarnation
Kali have fought many demons and
brought peace to earth. Then we
come down to Rani Laxmi
Bai who not only fought
until her last breath but
also looked after a whole
kingdom on her own. The
stories of women in India
go long on.
Recently, Suzanne Khan
went solo with a divorce
with Hrithik Roshan.
The news shocked the
whole country, but made
a huge mark to unhappy married
women. Women are sure today that
they don’t need a man to love happy.
Repeatedly women have stood up
Hritik Roshan - Suzanne Roshan
again. It is true that when
a woman works hard she is
bossy while a man is always the
boss. If she works hard she is
selfish which he, the man is
dedicated. A well-dressed
man is always professional
while a woman is a show off.
Still, women move forward.
They don’t follow tags, they
move ahead with hard work.
A true woman believes in
actions and not words.
After all, the Queen is the most
powerful coin on a chessboard.

The
Fabric
It need no brand or marketing to show
itself, it’s beauty is enough to say it
all, the oldest and the most dynamic
piece of cloth has become the new slinky

s old as the civilization,
as beautiful as the culture of India,
this mesmerizing garment has been
a part of the Indian antiquity and
contemporary timeline. It has
withstood the chronograph without
being prejudicial by the newfangled
attire.
This 6 yard piece of cloth has been
a paramount in the history of Indian
clothing, the origin of the sari dates
back to the times of The Indus
Valley Civilization. With over more
than 100 ways to drape a sari it has
got different origins and styles on
the basis of the place it belongs too.
With its first evidence of origination
in the Indus Valley Civilization to
the present day avatar, the survival
of the sari is based on the Vedic
culture of India. Now from being
just a garment, the sari is celebrated
in India and designers are working on
the sensibility of the drape.
As India was amongst the earliest
known places to grow cotton, it
affected the fabric for the sari and
thus resulting in their cloth for the
sari.
Sari from being just a drape or a
piece of clothing conveys notably
significant meaning and symbolism
through its colours and design.
The colours and patterns on a sari
represent information as beliefs,
virtues, and the region the person
came from.
“Of course, we have printed and
zari as well as embroidered saris on
offer. But I do get many customers
who want to just wear traditional
woven saris like Uppada, Banarasi,
Maheshwaris and also Paithani and
I respect them for their offbeat
choice,” says Krishna Aroop of
L’affaire Store, New Delhi.
A He chooses not to debase the
sari and offers discerning clientele
Kanjeevaram, Ikkats, Jamdanis and
Tangail which he believes should not
be altered, as they look stunning
just the way they are due to
their distinct motifs. This
shows the adoration and
enthusiasm of the
Indian population
for the different
varieties of saris.
For years, the
sari was worn
in a traditional
way but
designer Bhanu
Rajopadhye
Athaiya, India's
first Oscar
winner, was
perhaps the first
to experiment
with the nine
yards, doing away
with pleats and
giving it a skirt-like

variety and popularity of the Indian
sari induce designers, Indian as well
as International to experiment and
manipulate with the original styles
and drapes of the sari.
Designer Anand Kabra was perhaps
the first one to introduce Concept
Saris on ramp, Anamika Khanna
invented sari pyjamas where she used
crushed muslin fabric combining
the sari drape with casual pyjamas
replacing petticoats. Next Sabyasachi
Mukherjee created the "chhotu" or
cropped sari that is worn just above
the ankle. Interesting to know that
Italian designer Valentino designed
a sari dress for Jacqueline Kennedy,
wife of John F. Kennedy during
1950’s, five decades later in 2008;
French fashion designer Jean Paul
Gaultier showed a line of sari dresses
in his spring summer collection
and not to forget the Louis Vuitton
limited edition sari dress launched
as a part of their Diwali celebrations
globally and in competition to that
this year we have Hermès with
their limited edition saris have
shown the importance of
the Indian sari in the
fashion industry.

India and has
a lot to learn
from India,"
said Patrick
Thomas, the
chief executive
of Hermès

as he unveiled

says Emanuel Ungaro, the legendary
French designer, who was in India
for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion
Week Autumn-Winter 2014.
The International players show us
the importance and significance of
our tradition globally.
Fashion Weeks throughout the
world every year experiences a new
avatar of the sari in some form or the
other.
Sari is an endless piece of cloth;
blank and with infinite possibilities.
No other garment has the feasibility
to offer challenge to the sari. The
unbounded possibilities of the sari
have made the Indian designers take
the drape as a serious and more
exhaustive part of the Indian fashion
industry in the recent years. Whereas
designers like Satya Paul, Ritu
Kumar, Anju Modi, Rohit Bal, J.J.
Valaya, Rina Dhaka, Suneet Varma,
Tarun Tahiliani, Sandip Khosla and
Sabyasachi Mukherjee are among
the pioneers of Indian Fashion who
have helped the sari flourish and be
celebrated in India since the 90’s.
From the colorful and innovative
Satya to Sabhyasachi’s beautiful
styles and making, the only common
thing is the sari, which brings
together the Indian Culture and
Indian Handlooms, and have even
helped different artisans, craftsman
in bringing back their endangered
livelihood and have supported them
and have promoted them as well as
their craft internationally.
Nikki Mahajan is also among
the designers who have used their
skills and love for block prints and
vegetable dyes created by her to
make her sari look the most unique
collectibles
“I use various techniques to be
able to keep the sari buzzing---
from tie and dye, Shibori to hand
block printing, I have tried almost
everything to keep this six yard
ensemble contemporary,” says Nikki.
Saris have seen a lot of innovation
and modification from youngsters like
Gaurav Gupta creating sari gowns for
the girls who were not comfortable
wearing the sari on their own, though
the journey of innovation had been
already started in the 90’s when
Puneet Nanda, designer at Satya Paul
created the trouser sari.
“My effort was that women should
wear sari in a fashion industry
which was slowly abandoning this,
due to Western influences like the
embellished gown which women
started to prefer over the sari for
occasions like the sangeet or cocktail,
which were earlier just reserved for
33
a beautiful woven sari. That’s how
the trouser sari was born out of
necessity and my greed to help this
drape get into
a woman’s
wardrobe,”
says Puneet.
Puneet
was the
co-founder
of the label
and the head
of design
from 2001-
2010. His
last collection was the 'Art of Tarot'.
His brand have been a milestone in
the Indian fashion industry since its
launch
Satya Paul was India’s first fashion
designer brand to be launched way
back in 1985. He was among the
first few to work in tandem with the
weavers and establishing a designer
brand for the west, the brand was
launched by artist Satya Paul’s son,
Puneet Nanda, who used his strength
in art, photography and design to
build upon his father, Satya Paul’s
legacy. Declared aptly in the tagline-
“The power of print” as mentioned
by metromela.com, Satya Paul saris
are characterized by their unique
prints. Satya Paul Designs always have
strong influence of nature and beauty
associated with it. Satya Paul has a
distinct flavor which brings a unique
and contrary style to their saris which
undoubtedly is remunerative to the
brand as well as lucrative to the
Indian Fashion Industry.
Talking about the sari and not
mentioning Tarun Tahiliani would be
disrespect to the designer. Designer
Tarun Tahiliani also known as
The King of Drapes is one of the
few designers who have always
taken bold initiatives to develop
something unique with his fusion
of Italian technology and Indian
artifacts. His collections are widely
inspired by the Indian
culture, his eccentric and
unusual ways to drape
the sari with perfectly
matched accessories
and paramount colour
combos are the most
beautiful features of his
work.
“The sari is a drape that
has been celebrated for
years, it is just a piece of
unstitched garment, but
see the magic that ensues
once it goes around a
woman’s body. I have
tried to keep the integrity
of the sari alive without
playing around with the
essential silhouette, as
it takes the form of the
wearer and that for me
is its most outstanding
quality,” says Tarun
Tahiliani, the king of
drapes.
His excellences in style
of designing and draping
have gained him triumph
globally. His saris are
a part of the Indian
paparazzi and have been
highly acclaimed by the International
fashion industry too. October 2011
was the debut year for the Indian
Formula One and also Lady Gaga’s
first visit to India. The American pop
sensation donned his creation
for her performance at the
Formula One after-party
hosted by Arjun Rampal. This
was not the end, next year
International talk show host
Oprah Winfrey created a zest
on her maiden visit to India
with a Tarun Tahiliani orange
and golden Kanjeevaram sari
and these International artists
showed that the sari was not
just confined to the Indian
market it has a boundless and a
never ending future ahead.
People like Sally Holkar are
camouflaged contributors in the
preservation of the Indian craft
and their promotion. Sally has
been working with Maheshwar

she was the

also in international markets. This
article aims at studying the origin of
the Maheshwari sari, the motifs and
colours used and the other special
features of the sari.
“When I started working with
weavers, they all wanted to leave to
get jobs in the big cities, as weaving
was giving them no money. But today
their children also take part in the
weaving process as we have not only
revived the Maheshwaris, but also
made it profitable for the languishing
weavers and their families,” she adds.
Sally has revitalized the entire
Maheshwar belt, by setting up
schools, for weavers’ children,
offering healthcare and work all
year round.
“We created splendid pieces
just by adding an intrepid mix
of cotton and silk in the warp
and weft to make the Maheshwar
breathable so that women could
wear it in the hottest months
without a care in the world,” says
Sally.
Sally’s NGO makes pure khadi
saris which are fantastically sold
and Sabyasachi
Mukherjee is their
premiere customer
who buys majority
of their creation
and for his Save
the Sari project, he
tends to keep his
design inputs to a
minimum. “I only
curate or give inputs
into aspects such as
colour, etc., and not
more. The idea is to
keep it authentic and
traditional.
The sari being celebrated widely
among the modern generation has
the ability to mould itself accordingly.
The new sari

modern women
in a hurry, and
offers ease and
comfort. The
changes which
the sari have
faced to cope up
with the modern
women can be
seen with its
different styles,
some of them are
Double Pallu Sari
The lower half of
the sari is pleated and
draped tightly. The
specialty of the style
is the crossed double
pallu that is taken
over the shoulder.
Pant Style Sari
Earlier, only the
traditional Navwari
sari was draped like a pant. This is the
contemporary style of draping the
sari like a pant.
Gown Style Sari
There are many ways
to drape sari like a gown.
Here the sari has been
pleated normally and
then the loose end of
the sari has been pinned
across the bosom. It
gives the sari a very
stylish gown-like look.
The globalization
of the sari with the
modernization of the women has led
to the manipulation of the original
drape and customization of it on
the basis of its need and style. The
modern day sari offers a more wide
variety to the customers and even
creates a new consumer base, but
whatever altering is done to the sari it
would still remain the miracle drape
as the soul of the design lies in the
6 yard magical drape in any form or
shape.

&Our Indian Film Industry have been taking sex and related issues very maturely.
Since early 70's many movies related to this subject has released and still continuing.
Straight from a woman's personal life to the life of sex workers bollywood have
shown us everything. Here we have compiled some of the best bollywood movies
which have shown sex and it's issues in society through the art of cinematography.
Satyam Shivam Sundaram
(1978)
It was one of the only mainstream
movies at the time that dealt with the
subject of desire. It had both, sex
and skin. The dichotomy of a woman
who is perfect from one half of her
face and burnt from the other added
to the point that desire was all about
how you packaged it and a sense of
mystery.

Umrao Jaan
(1981):
This is
one of the
critically-
acclaimed
movies and
showed the
exploitation
of the
girl child.
Rekha, who
played the lead role, is kidnapped
and then sold to a brothel by
her neighbour. Umrao Jaan is
remembered for its memorable
melodies like "Dil cheez kya hai",
"Justuju Jiski Thi", "In ankhon
ki masti", and "Yeh kya jagah hai
doston".
Utsav (1984)
Utsav was a
movie that
celebrated
sex and
glorified
it.Whether
it was
seduction or
the act itself,
it made it
out to be something not natural but a
craft that had to be honed, perfected
and handed down generations.
Aastha (1997)
This movie
came out
at the time
when the
idea of
globalisation
was just
born. It
was the
beginning
of the
consumerist era, the theme the movie
played with was that everything could
be traded for a price. The story of a
middle class woman, selling herself in
order to meet the needs of her child
because her husband could not match
up to his familyâ??s expectations with
his meagre professor salary is both,
shocking and poignant.
Love Sex
Aur Dhokha
(2010)
This was a
movie like
no other.
The film
explored
voyeurism
in a manner
that was interesting, seemingly light
and thought-provoking. It showed
the obsession people have with each
other’s lives, the price one will pay to
take a secret peek into it and how far
one can go with such an obsession.
Ishqiya (2010)
Ishqiya was sexy because for the
first time in Hindi cinema you had
a woman protagonist who gave into
lust and did not shy away from a
one-night stand. This was a major
breach from tradition because never
in mainstream cinema has a heroine
ever separated her sexual desires
from love.

Sensual Ornamental

What are your philosophies of your profession?
Prepping and priming the skin is really important for the make up to be flawless and long lasting. And then
I usually start with the eye makeup so that if there is any fallout it can be cleared before the application of
foundation. Concealing can be done before or after the application of foundation again depending on the
skin and then contouring, highlighting and application of blush follows. End it
with the application of lipstick or lip gloss.
What is your favourite makeup brand?
There are a lot of very good makeup brands out there. Mac is one of the most
popular one because of wide variety of colours and products. I also particularly
love the makeup forever had range. It’s the only make-up product on which I
can trust blindly, as I always have good memories with it.
What kind of makeup element do you use to get seductive and
sensual look?
To get the seductive and sensual look, bold make up is best suited!
The look is all about eyeliner and smoky shadow shades that create a serious
stare. With eyes this strong, it’s always best to downplay the rest of Makeup
with neutral tones.
So the look opted was base followed by smoky smouldering eyes with cat-eye
shaped liner, smoked kohl and fluttery lashes, contoured cheeks with dusky
blush and nude lips to compliment this strong sultry look.
How do you consider the makeup an important part in giving a
sensual and seductive appeal?
Makeup is important to give the seductive and sensual look as makeup
conceals the flaws and defines the face with bold eyes and rest of the
face with neutral tones following aesthetics. Sultry look is incomplete
with the outfit only. Make up gives boldness to the face with
perfection as required for the sensual look.
The Art of clicking Nudes
ude Photography is an
Art depicting the human
body with all its beauty
has been the greatest
form of art for centuries. Portraying
nude figure through art has been a
medium of expressing the male and
female beauties since the ancient
times. The Greeks and the western
art forms portrayed their Gods and
warriors, goddesses and nymphs
through alluring paintings. Athletes,
dancers, warriors in various nude
positions were said to express energy,
life and complex emotions.
Hence, since those times, nudity has
been considered as fine art. It has
become a genre of art.
In the nineteenth century, since
the invention of photography, nude
has been a source of inspiration
for all those adapted this medium.
Early photographers transformed
the pieces of nude painting into
photographs, setting the same
background and giving the model
same poses as in the paintings. An
example of this is Eugène Durieu,
who recreated the famous Odalisque
painting.
Nude photography being very
realistic, unlike paintings and
sculptures, brings in form and
composition of a human form
perfectly. It has played an important
role in establishing photography
as a form of art. Alfred Stieglitz,
Imogen Cunningham and Alfred
Cheney Johnston were among the
first photographers to capture nudity.
Alfred Johnston was also the first to
showcase his collections at a gallery

Nude photography
since the beginning has
raised concerns
among the
public and raised
discussions on
sexuality, sin and
cultural identity.
In some cultures
and countries
it is highly
controversial, but
for artists and
for people who
appreciate art, it is a celebration of
human form. It is study of the body’s
landscape in all its beauty.
Nude photography, with all its
accuracy and specificity got a
completely different aspect after
World War 1. Artists like Man
Ray, Hans Bellmer and André
Kertész approached this genre of
photography in a surreal manner.
They found this form of art a
play for visual and psycho-sexual
exploration. In Distortion by André
Kertész, a woman’s body is stretched
and pulled in the reflections of a
fun-house mirror. This approach to
photography stood in stark contrast
to the perfect feminine beauty
captured by photographers earlier.

accepted as a form of art
without any controversies in
most parts of the world. In
bringing about this change
in the society, the renowned

play. In 1996, he published a

and nude urban women that
changed the outlook of many
towards nude photography.
Prabuddha had once said, “The

he was asked his views on this

Hence, people have now started
understanding the emotions and

portrayed through this genre of art.

The title track, "Like a Virgin",attracted the

the song and its accompanying video promoted
premarital sex and undermined family values. Her
music and image were shown in a new, sexualized

Her image was one that was highly shown, and her

ablo Ruiz y Picasso, also known as Pablo
Picasso (25 October 1881- 8 April 1973 )
was the famous Spanish painter, sculptor,
printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and
playwright.
Picasso showed a passion and a skill for drawing from
an early age. From the age of seven, Picasso received
formal artistic training from his father in figure drawing
and oil painting. His father was a traditional academic
artist and instructor, who believed that proper training, is
required to discipline copying of the masters, and drawing
the human body from plaster casts and live models. At
the age of 15, Picasso enrolled him in the advanced class
of art, at the Royal Academy of Art in Barcelona .
The medium in which Picasso made his most important
contribution was painting. In his paintings, Picasso used
colour as an expressive element, but relied on drawing
rather than subtleties of colour to create form and space
.He sometimes added sand to his paint to vary its texture
Picasso’s Blue Period (1901–1904), characterized by sombre
paintings rendered in shades of blue and blue-green,
only occasionally warmed by other colours, began either
in Spain in early 1901, in Paris in the second half of the
year. Many paintings of gaunt mothers with children date
from the Blue Period, during which Picasso divided his
time between Barcelona and Paris.
The Rose Period (1904–1906) is characterized by a more
cheery style with orange and pink colours, and featuring
many circus people, acrobats and harlequins known
in France. The harlequin, a comedic character usually
depicted in check patterned clothing, became a personal
symbol for Picasso. Picasso met Fern¬¬ande Olivier, a
bohemian artist who became his mistress, in Paris in 1904.
Olivier appears in many of his Rose Period paintings,
many of which are influenced by his warm relationship
with her, in addition to his increased exposure to French
painting.
During the 1920s, much of the work Picasso did drew
on the classic themes, and large, monumental style nudes.
His art became more of an interpretation, as opposed
to work that represented anything that was going on in
reality.
Picasso’s early sculptures were carved from wood or
moulded in wax or clay, but from 1909 to 1928 Picasso

P
abandoned moulding and made sculptural constructions
using diverse materials. He made a number of drawings
from postcards and photographs that reflect his interest
in the stylistic conventions and static character of posed
photographs. In 1921 he simultaneously painted several
large neoclassical paintings and two versions of the
Cubist composition
In the winter of 1935 Picasso became intimately
involved with Dora Maar, a stunningly beautiful,
passionate and acutely intelligent young woman. Dora's
influence was to stimulate one of the most innovative
periods of his career. His personal life was in turmoil
when they met: he had broken up with his wife Olga
Koklova, a ballet dancer with the Ballet Russes; and
Marie-Thérèse Walter, his mistress since 1927, had
given birth to their daughter, Maya. He felt incapable of
painting and instead devoted his creative energy to writing
poetry.
Picasso and Dora had a complex personal and artistic
relationship that spanned the intense period from the
outbreak of the Spanish Civil War to the end of the
Second World War.
Dora Maar was already established in Paris as an
acclaimed fashion and publicity photographer, before
her involvement with Picasso. Dora's photography and
the experimental techniques she employed were a source
of inspiration to Picasso. He began to take photographs
of her that were the catalyst for a whole series of works
that blended photography with printmaking in an entirely
new manner. Using photographs of Dora as a starting
point, Picasso painted several portraits on glass before
exposing them over photographic paper to create unique
and surprising photographic impressions. He extended
the process by further scratching into the images on
glass plates to create different effects. By placing lace,
tissue and other fabrics between the glass plate and the
photographic paper, Picasso was able to build up novel
and unprecedented multi-layered compositions.
It is interesting to ponder whether Picasso would have
made these unique, experimental works if he had not met
Dora.

The Sex temple of India
Khajuraho Temple
India’s Phantasmagorical land, the temples of sex, the Kama’s and the beautiful landscapes of
Khajuraho welcomes you to experience the devotion of love and passion. Here we have present
the magical journey to the Land of Kama - Khajuraho
74
he Khajuraho Group of
Monuments in Khajuraho,
a town in the Indian state
of Madhya Pradesh, locat-
ed in Chhatarpur District, about 620
kilometres from New Delhi, is one of
the most popular tourist destinations
in India.
The name Khajuraho, ancient
“Kharjuravahaka”, is derived from
the Sanskrit words Khajuraho which
means date palm and vahaka equals
to “one who carries”.
Khajuraho has the largest group
of medieval Hindu and Jain temples,
famous for their erotic sculptures.
The temples are mainly known for its
sexually explicit sculptures.
The Khajuraho group of monu-
ments are made out of local sand-
stone, each piece painstakingly carved
just perfectly so as to fit together
solely by the force of gravity.
The walls of the monuments are cut
so perfectly that the building holds
itself up with no use of mortar to
keep the blocks of stone held togeth-
er. The more impressive is the detail
that can be seen on the statues. More
than simply naked sandstone people
along the walls, there are innumerable
depictions of intercourse, and many
stone couples intertwined in coitus.
The temples serve as monuments to
various Hindu Gods. What is espe-
cially interesting is the fact that such
sexual imagery was not considered to
be shocking or obscene to the people
T

are performed within the temples.
The celebration of the marriage of
Shiva and Parvati takes place every
year, which is a large foundation
of the Hindu faith. The ceremony
involves many rituals of fertility, one
of which included the bathing of a
large stone phallic symbol in milk,
butter, yogurt, and other products of
who built the structures. Rather, sex-
uality was the way of the gods. For
one to have sex was to be holy. This
is an interesting contrast to the way
most western religions view sexual-
ity. As something that one should be
ashamed of, and to hide away.
The Khajuraho temples contain
sexual art outside the temple or
near the deities. Some of the
temples that have two layers
of walls have small erotic
carvings on the outside
of the inner wall. It has
been suggested that
these suggest tantric
sexual practices.
Some 10% of the
carvings contain
sexual themes and those
reportedly do not depict
deities but rather sexual
activities between people.
Those depictions show women
putting on makeup, musicians,
potters, farmers, and other folk.
The mundane scenes are all at some
distance from the temple deities. A
common misconception is that, since
the old structures with carvings in
Khajuraho are temples, the carvings
depict sex between deities.
There are themes drawn from
tantrism and from the form the
“Kama Sutra” that perhaps served
as a visual manual for happiness and
pleasure. The eroticism also perhaps
could ward off the threats of the
amorous rain god Indra. The tem-
ples additionally commemorate the
marriage of Shiva and Parvati, whose
union formed the basis of cosmic en-
ergy and are replicated in the human
sexual act.
Today the temples are a UNESCO
world heritage site, and are still use
still used to, with many ceremonies
a cow, which is regarded to be sacred
in Hinduism. This is done with much
care so as to prepare the groom
(Shiva) for the wedding. It is fol-
lowed by dressing the stone itself, and
anointing it in the common tradition.
In essence, this event, which is highly
sexual in nature, is the crux of the
Hindu creation story.
The temples are also are a tour-
ist destination for those who
wish to view the statues and
cavernous interiors of the
temples, making it a major
site for Indian tourism.
The monuments are
also host to a dance
festival, which
features traditional
dance performances
from some of the most
well-known performers in
India.
The Khajuraho Dance Fes-
tival, held every year in the first
week of February (1st to 7th), is an
opportunity for visitors to experience
various classical Indian dances set
against the backdrop of the Chi-
tragupta or Vishwanath Temples.
The M P Tourism Development
has set up kiosks at the Khajuraho
railway station (which is 9 km away
from the city), with helpful tourist
officers to guide the travellers. The
temples in Khajuraho are broadly
divided into three parts : the Eastern
group, the Southern Group and the
Western group of temples of which
the Western group alone has the facil-
ity of an Audio guided tour wherein
the tourists are guided through the
seven eight temples. There is also an
audio guided tour developed by the
Archaeological Survey of India which
includes a narration of the historical
data related to the temples.

The sari saw many morphed versions of itself, from the influences by the Romans to the varied draping styles, lengths according to the regions and tribes. This journey of the sari can be experienced in stylist Geeta Khanna’s upcoming book (unnamed) in which she covers the Indian styles and costumes and how it has changed throughout the decade. Our community is running after the western culture leaving their own culture and heritage behind, and sari being a principal part of the lives of the Indian women has been surviving till date due to its Vedic importance. This is the age when the sari is being celebrated in India and Indian designers are working on the sensibility of the drape. Geeta Khanna while writing her upcoming book shares her views on the Indian sari with us. The meaning of sari Sari is endless, blank and full of infinite possibilities. their clothes withfur and wool as climate up there was not same as India. The British introduced the petticoat to the Indian sari, which restricted many styles of draping, Andhra and Maharastra to be few of them. There are more than 100 ways to drape a sari varying from the length to the region of origin to the tribe which drapes them, just like the Kerala and Karnataka sari pleats are at the back whereas the most of India don’t follow the style of draping. The Bengal sari used to be 11 yards and was draped beautifully, unless British arrived and manipulated the drape to that extent which made it no longer exist. The Bollywood Influence The Bollywood is a major contributor to the popularity of the sari as it is a reflection of the society in which we live. The journey of cinema shows the sari and its transformation through the ages. Bollywood is inspired by different Indian literatures and we as Indian learn from the cinema and literature about our culture. Eroticism association with the sari has woken up the romance of the 20’s and its elements and is making a big comeback. The sari is not just limited to the Bollywood; even the Hollywood enjoys wearing it. The cultural effect Culture is the base of every civilization, basic culture is found in the rurals of India. “Young generation is dhurandar and strong, they have no effect on the culture” says Geeta according to her a cultural shift needs years of practices to be changed. Therefore India with a strong cultural base and a robust heritage will preserve their ancestral gift of the sari through the coming years. Paris Hilton 11

KAMA the season of LVESensuality and Seductiveness are the flavors of this season, whether it be Anupama Dayal’s latest collection “Kama” or Rupesh Paul’s upcoming movie “Kamasutra 3D”, both have been highly influenced by our passionate past. This season sensuality is the new fashion, with Anupama Dayal’s autumn-winter collection at the Wills India Fashion Week inspired by the “Kamasutra”. The collection was mostly bridal but not really for the wedding ceremony. The silhouettes ranged from saris teamed with skimpy cholis and corsets. Chanderi, brocades, zardozi, tangil, gotapatti, hand prints, pearl embroideries and tassels were the fabrics seen in the collection. The collection showed a bold Indian bride with offbeat style and glamour. “Contrary to popular perception the Kamasutra is not really just a sex manual. It’s spiritual, holistic. It is an extensive guide on virtuous and gracious living and elaborates on love, family life.” - Anupama. Kama Kamasutra 3D The art of sex taught by us and followed by the world, Kamasutra by Vātsyāyana needs no description to anyone. It has been a part of the society since ages. It has been printed to books, made into movies and shown through various forms, out of which the award winning movie “Kamasutra- a tale of love” (1996) by Mira Nair is amongst the most controversial Indian bioscope on the Kamasutra, but who doesn’t loves controversies, Indian director Rupesh Paul is all set to release his “Kamasutra 3D” starring Sherlyn Chopra this May. “Kamasutra 3D” is amongst the most awaited movie of the year and is the only Indian film with 5 songs to be selected in the Original Song contention category for the 86th Academy Awards. It is an extended celebration to the 100 years of Indian cinema, which was 2013. So people waiting for the movie your countdown has begun. 15

Who says aQueen needs a King to lead the Throne? Popular and Powerful women today seem to be leaving their husbands to create a name for themselves. Some say, why be a wife when you can be an unmarried Queen? woman has always lived under the shadow of her husband in India. However, things seem to be taking a turn now. The world is constantly changing. It used to be a man’s world; maybe it still is but slowly changed to the world where a man cannot succeed without the help from a woman. Today women have the courage to live alone. The number of unmarried women or single divorced mothers seems to be growing. Not just that, young women today refuse to get married young, wanting first to establish themselves as an executive who can conquer the world alone. Women have learnt that a dream can be their own and they don’t need to be led. Women can lead. Nobody said it was simple, but it’s not impossible. The world went crashing over Gwyneth Paltrow for her divorce with famous musician Chris Martin. The couple was happily married for many years. However, once the wedding was off, Gwenyth went her way. Promoting her website, popularizing her website and portraying herself as an independent, strong executive. Few years ago, Padma Laxmi divorced famous booker prizewinner. The woman established that she wasn’t married to an older man only for his money. Durga Ma is the Goddess of strength. She and the incarnation Kali have fought many demons and brought peace to earth. Then we come down to Rani Laxmi Bai who not only fought until her last breath but also looked after a whole kingdom on her own. The stories of women in India go long on. Recently, Suzanne Khan went solo with a divorce with Hrithik Roshan. The news shocked the whole country, but made a huge mark to unhappy married women. Women are sure today that they don’t need a man to love happy. Repeatedly women have stood up Hritik Roshan - Suzanne Roshan again. It is true that when a woman works hard she is bossy while a man is always the boss. If she works hard she is selfish which he, the man is dedicated. A well-dressed man is always professional while a woman is a show off. Still, women move forward. They don’t follow tags, they move ahead with hard work. A true woman believes in actions and not words. After all, the Queen is the most powerful coin on a chessboard. 25

With over more than 100 ways to drape a sari it has got different origins and styles on the basis of the place it belongs too. With its first evidence of origination in the Indus Valley Civilization to the present day avatar, the survival of the sari is based on the Vedic culture of India. Now from being just a garment, the sari is celebrated in India and designers are working on the sensibility of the drape. As India was amongst the earliest known places to grow cotton, it affected the fabric for the sari and thus resulting in their cloth for the sari. Sari from being just a drape or a piece of clothing conveys notably significant meaning and symbolism through its colours and design. The colours and patterns on a sari represent information as beliefs, virtues, and the region the person came from. “Of course, we have printed and zari as well as embroidered saris on offer. But I do get many customers who want to just wear traditional woven saris like Uppada, Banarasi, Maheshwaris and also Paithani and I respect them for their offbeat choice,” says Krishna Aroop of L’affaire Store, New Delhi. A He chooses not to debase the sari and offers discerning clientele Kanjeevaram, Ikkats, Jamdanis and Tangail which he believes should not be altered, as they look stunning just the way they are due to their distinct motifs. This shows the adoration and enthusiasm of the Indian population for the different varieties of saris. For years, the sari was worn in a traditional way but designer Bhanu Rajopadhye Athaiya, India's first Oscar winner, was perhaps the first to experiment with the nine yards, doing away with pleats and giving it a skirt-like look. variety and popularityof the Indian sari induce designers, Indian as well as International to experiment and manipulate with the original styles and drapes of the sari. Designer Anand Kabra was perhaps the first one to introduce Concept Saris on ramp, Anamika Khanna invented sari pyjamas where she used crushed muslin fabric combining the sari drape with casual pyjamas replacing petticoats. Next Sabyasachi Mukherjee created the "chhotu" or cropped sari that is worn just above the ankle. Interesting to know that Italian designer Valentino designed a sari dress for Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of John F. Kennedy during 1950’s, five decades later in 2008; French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier showed a line of sari dresses in his spring summer collection and not to forget the Louis Vuitton limited edition sari dress launched as a part of their Diwali celebrations globally and in competition to that this year we have Hermès with their limited edition saris have shown the importance of the Indian sari in the fashion industry. "Hermès admires India and has a lot to learn from India," said Patrick Thomas, the chief executive of Hermès International, as he unveiled their new line of limited edition saris. “I have always admired the liquidity of the sari, it is the LouisVuittonDiwalithemedSari Nikhil Thampi’s Skirt Sari at the LFW 2013 Jenjum Gadi’s Kimono Sari at WIFW SS 14 Malini Ramani’s Sari Gown at WIFW SS 14 Kanika Kaur Saluja’s Sari Jumpsuit at WIFW SS 14 most beautiful drape ever created,” says Emanuel Ungaro, the legendary French designer, who was in India for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn-Winter 2014. The International players show us the importance and significance of our tradition globally. Fashion Weeks throughout the world every year experiences a new avatar of the sari in some form or the other. Sari is an endless piece of cloth; blank and with infinite possibilities. No other garment has the feasibility to offer challenge to the sari. The unbounded possibilities of the sari have made the Indian designers take the drape as a serious and more exhaustive part of the Indian fashion industry in the recent years. Whereas designers like Satya Paul, Ritu Kumar, Anju Modi, Rohit Bal, J.J. Valaya, Rina Dhaka, Suneet Varma, Tarun Tahiliani, Sandip Khosla and Sabyasachi Mukherjee are among the pioneers of Indian Fashion who have helped the sari flourish and be celebrated in India since the 90’s. From the colorful and innovative Satya to Sabhyasachi’s beautiful styles and making, the only common thing is the sari, which brings together the Indian Culture and Indian Handlooms, and have even helped different artisans, craftsman in bringing back their endangered livelihood and have supported them and have promoted them as well as their craft internationally. Nikki Mahajan is also among the designers who have used their skills and love for block prints and vegetable dyes created by her to make her sari look the most unique collectibles “I use various techniques to be able to keep the sari buzzing--- from tie and dye, Shibori to hand block printing, I have tried almost everything to keep this six yard ensemble contemporary,” says Nikki. Saris have seen a lot of innovation and modification from youngsters like Gaurav Gupta creating sari gowns for the girls who were not comfortable wearing the sari on their own, though the journey of innovation had been already started in the 90’s when Puneet Nanda, designer at Satya Paul created the trouser sari. “My effort was that women should wear sari in a fashion industry which was slowly abandoning this, due to Western influences like the embellished gown which women started to prefer over the sari for occasions like the sangeet or cocktail, which were earlier just reserved for 33

a beautiful wovensari. That’s how the trouser sari was born out of necessity and my greed to help this drape get into a woman’s wardrobe,” says Puneet. Puneet was the co-founder of the label and the head of design from 2001- 2010. His last collection was the 'Art of Tarot'. His brand have been a milestone in the Indian fashion industry since its launch Satya Paul was India’s first fashion designer brand to be launched way back in 1985. He was among the first few to work in tandem with the weavers and establishing a designer brand for the west, the brand was launched by artist Satya Paul’s son, Puneet Nanda, who used his strength in art, photography and design to build upon his father, Satya Paul’s legacy. Declared aptly in the tagline- “The power of print” as mentioned by metromela.com, Satya Paul saris are characterized by their unique prints. Satya Paul Designs always have strong influence of nature and beauty associated with it. Satya Paul has a distinct flavor which brings a unique and contrary style to their saris which undoubtedly is remunerative to the brand as well as lucrative to the Indian Fashion Industry. Talking about the sari and not mentioning Tarun Tahiliani would be disrespect to the designer. Designer Tarun Tahiliani also known as The King of Drapes is one of the few designers who have always taken bold initiatives to develop something unique with his fusion of Italian technology and Indian artifacts. His collections are widely inspired by the Indian culture, his eccentric and unusual ways to drape the sari with perfectly matched accessories and paramount colour combos are the most beautiful features of his work. “The sari is a drape that has been celebrated for years, it is just a piece of unstitched garment, but see the magic that ensues once it goes around a woman’s body. I have tried to keep the integrity of the sari alive without playing around with the essential silhouette, as it takes the form of the wearer and that for me is its most outstanding quality,” says Tarun Tahiliani, the king of drapes. His excellences in style of designing and draping have gained him triumph globally. His saris are a part of the Indian paparazzi and have been highly acclaimed by the International fashion industry too. October 2011 was the debut year for the Indian Formula One and also Lady Gaga’s first visit to India. The American pop sensation donned his creation for her performance at the Formula One after-party hosted by Arjun Rampal. This was not the end, next year International talk show host Oprah Winfrey created a zest on her maiden visit to India with a Tarun Tahiliani orange and golden Kanjeevaram sari and these International artists showed that the sari was not just confined to the Indian market it has a boundless and a never ending future ahead. People like Sally Holkar are camouflaged contributors in the preservation of the Indian craft and their promotion. Sally has been working with Maheshwar weavers for more than 30 years with her NGO Women Weave; she was the one who along with her husband Richard Shivaji Rao created the organization ‘Rehwa’ to provide a new life to the dying tradition of Maheshwari saris. The beautiful Maheshwari saris are among the most popular saris produced in India. These saris are in demand not only in India, but Tarun Tahiliani Mandira Bedi in Satya Paul Puneet Nanada Lady Gaga in Tarun Tahiliani Oprah Winfrey in Tarun Tahiliani 34

also in internationalmarkets. This article aims at studying the origin of the Maheshwari sari, the motifs and colours used and the other special features of the sari. “When I started working with weavers, they all wanted to leave to get jobs in the big cities, as weaving was giving them no money. But today their children also take part in the weaving process as we have not only revived the Maheshwaris, but also made it profitable for the languishing weavers and their families,” she adds. Sally has revitalized the entire Maheshwar belt, by setting up schools, for weavers’ children, offering healthcare and work all year round. “We created splendid pieces just by adding an intrepid mix of cotton and silk in the warp and weft to make the Maheshwar breathable so that women could wear it in the hottest months without a care in the world,” says Sally. Sally’s NGO makes pure khadi saris which are fantastically sold and Sabyasachi Mukherjee is their premiere customer who buys majority of their creation and for his Save the Sari project, he tends to keep his design inputs to a minimum. “I only curate or give inputs into aspects such as colour, etc., and not more. The idea is to keep it authentic and traditional. The sari being celebrated widely among the modern generation has the ability to mould itself accordingly. The new sari has emerged with stitched avatar for modern women in a hurry, and offers ease and comfort. The changes which the sari have faced to cope up with the modern women can be seen with its different styles, some of them are Double Pallu Sari The lower half of the sari is pleated and draped tightly. The specialty of the style is the crossed double pallu that is taken over the shoulder. Pant Style Sari Earlier, only the traditional Navwari sari was draped like a pant. This is the contemporary style of draping the sari like a pant. Gown Style Sari There are many ways to drape sari like a gown. Here the sari has been pleated normally and then the loose end of the sari has been pinned across the bosom. It gives the sari a very stylish gown-like look. The globalization of the sari with the modernization of the women has led to the manipulation of the original drape and customization of it on the basis of its need and style. The modern day sari offers a more wide variety to the customers and even creates a new consumer base, but whatever altering is done to the sari it would still remain the miracle drape as the soul of the design lies in the 6 yard magical drape in any form or shape. &Our Indian FilmIndustry have been taking sex and related issues very maturely. Since early 70's many movies related to this subject has released and still continuing. Straight from a woman's personal life to the life of sex workers bollywood have shown us everything. Here we have compiled some of the best bollywood movies which have shown sex and it's issues in society through the art of cinematography. Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) It was one of the only mainstream movies at the time that dealt with the subject of desire. It had both, sex and skin. The dichotomy of a woman who is perfect from one half of her face and burnt from the other added to the point that desire was all about how you packaged it and a sense of mystery. BOLLYW D 50

Umrao Jaan (1981): This is oneof the critically- acclaimed movies and showed the exploitation of the girl child. Rekha, who played the lead role, is kidnapped and then sold to a brothel by her neighbour. Umrao Jaan is remembered for its memorable melodies like "Dil cheez kya hai", "Justuju Jiski Thi", "In ankhon ki masti", and "Yeh kya jagah hai doston". Utsav (1984) Utsav was a movie that celebrated sex and glorified it.Whether it was seduction or the act itself, it made it out to be something not natural but a craft that had to be honed, perfected and handed down generations. Aastha (1997) This movie came out at the time when the idea of globalisation was just born. It was the beginning of the consumerist era, the theme the movie played with was that everything could be traded for a price. The story of a middle class woman, selling herself in order to meet the needs of her child because her husband could not match up to his familyâ??s expectations with his meagre professor salary is both, shocking and poignant. Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010) This was a movie like no other. The film explored voyeurism in a manner that was interesting, seemingly light and thought-provoking. It showed the obsession people have with each other’s lives, the price one will pay to take a secret peek into it and how far one can go with such an obsession. Ishqiya (2010) Ishqiya was sexy because for the first time in Hindi cinema you had a woman protagonist who gave into lust and did not shy away from a one-night stand. This was a major breach from tradition because never in mainstream cinema has a heroine ever separated her sexual desires from love. 51

What are yourphilosophies of your profession? Prepping and priming the skin is really important for the make up to be flawless and long lasting. And then I usually start with the eye makeup so that if there is any fallout it can be cleared before the application of foundation. Concealing can be done before or after the application of foundation again depending on the skin and then contouring, highlighting and application of blush follows. End it with the application of lipstick or lip gloss. What is your favourite makeup brand? There are a lot of very good makeup brands out there. Mac is one of the most popular one because of wide variety of colours and products. I also particularly love the makeup forever had range. It’s the only make-up product on which I can trust blindly, as I always have good memories with it. What kind of makeup element do you use to get seductive and sensual look? To get the seductive and sensual look, bold make up is best suited! The look is all about eyeliner and smoky shadow shades that create a serious stare. With eyes this strong, it’s always best to downplay the rest of Makeup with neutral tones. So the look opted was base followed by smoky smouldering eyes with cat-eye shaped liner, smoked kohl and fluttery lashes, contoured cheeks with dusky blush and nude lips to compliment this strong sultry look. How do you consider the makeup an important part in giving a sensual and seductive appeal? Makeup is important to give the seductive and sensual look as makeup conceals the flaws and defines the face with bold eyes and rest of the face with neutral tones following aesthetics. Sultry look is incomplete with the outfit only. Make up gives boldness to the face with perfection as required for the sensual look.

The Art ofclicking Nudes ude Photography is an Art depicting the human body with all its beauty has been the greatest form of art for centuries. Portraying nude figure through art has been a medium of expressing the male and female beauties since the ancient times. The Greeks and the western art forms portrayed their Gods and warriors, goddesses and nymphs through alluring paintings. Athletes, dancers, warriors in various nude positions were said to express energy, life and complex emotions. Hence, since those times, nudity has been considered as fine art. It has become a genre of art. In the nineteenth century, since the invention of photography, nude has been a source of inspiration for all those adapted this medium. Early photographers transformed the pieces of nude painting into photographs, setting the same background and giving the model same poses as in the paintings. An example of this is Eugène Durieu, who recreated the famous Odalisque painting. Nude photography being very realistic, unlike paintings and sculptures, brings in form and composition of a human form perfectly. It has played an important role in establishing photography as a form of art. Alfred Stieglitz, Imogen Cunningham and Alfred Cheney Johnston were among the first photographers to capture nudity. Alfred Johnston was also the first to showcase his collections at a gallery Mona Kuhn "The body is a place where our mind resides, and that’s what I’m photographing". Distortion by André Kertész N 58

having showcased severalhundreds of nude artists and showgirls. Soon, after magazines came in, celebrities like Demi Moore and Kate Moss were also photographed nude by leading photographers like Irving Penn and Anne Leibovitz. Nude photography since the beginning has raised concerns among the public and raised discussions on sexuality, sin and cultural identity. In some cultures and countries it is highly controversial, but for artists and for people who appreciate art, it is a celebration of human form. It is study of the body’s landscape in all its beauty. Nude photography, with all its accuracy and specificity got a completely different aspect after World War 1. Artists like Man Ray, Hans Bellmer and André Kertész approached this genre of photography in a surreal manner. They found this form of art a play for visual and psycho-sexual exploration. In Distortion by André Kertész, a woman’s body is stretched and pulled in the reflections of a fun-house mirror. This approach to photography stood in stark contrast to the perfect feminine beauty captured by photographers earlier. In modern day, nude photography has become quite a Harmony by Bartek Gasiorek “The challenge of nude photography does not lie to me, It lies with the women who is baring herself totally vulnerable in front of me” Prabuddha Das Gupta common imagery. It is now accepted as a form of art without any controversies in most parts of the world. In bringing about this change in the society, the renowned photographer, Prabuddha Das Gupta had a major role to play. In 1996, he published a collection ‘women’, of portraits and nude urban women that changed the outlook of many towards nude photography. Prabuddha had once said, “The challenge of nude photography does not lie to me, It lies with the women who is baring herself totally PrabhuddhaDasGupta Hanging out by Thomas Doering vulnerable in front of me”, when he was asked his views on this controversial collection released by him. Hence, people have now started understanding the emotions and feelings that it brings out. Love and suffering, joy and sorrow and true uncovered sexuality can all be portrayed through this genre of art. The photographers’ fascination with the nude has redefined art. 59

ablo Ruiz yPicasso, also known as Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881- 8 April 1973 ) was the famous Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright. Picasso showed a passion and a skill for drawing from an early age. From the age of seven, Picasso received formal artistic training from his father in figure drawing and oil painting. His father was a traditional academic artist and instructor, who believed that proper training, is required to discipline copying of the masters, and drawing the human body from plaster casts and live models. At the age of 15, Picasso enrolled him in the advanced class of art, at the Royal Academy of Art in Barcelona . The medium in which Picasso made his most important contribution was painting. In his paintings, Picasso used colour as an expressive element, but relied on drawing rather than subtleties of colour to create form and space .He sometimes added sand to his paint to vary its texture Picasso’s Blue Period (1901–1904), characterized by sombre paintings rendered in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colours, began either in Spain in early 1901, in Paris in the second half of the year. Many paintings of gaunt mothers with children date from the Blue Period, during which Picasso divided his time between Barcelona and Paris. The Rose Period (1904–1906) is characterized by a more cheery style with orange and pink colours, and featuring many circus people, acrobats and harlequins known in France. The harlequin, a comedic character usually depicted in check patterned clothing, became a personal symbol for Picasso. Picasso met Fern¬¬ande Olivier, a bohemian artist who became his mistress, in Paris in 1904. Olivier appears in many of his Rose Period paintings, many of which are influenced by his warm relationship with her, in addition to his increased exposure to French painting. During the 1920s, much of the work Picasso did drew on the classic themes, and large, monumental style nudes. His art became more of an interpretation, as opposed to work that represented anything that was going on in reality. Picasso’s early sculptures were carved from wood or moulded in wax or clay, but from 1909 to 1928 Picasso Blue Period Red Period Cubic Painting P

abandoned moulding andmade sculptural constructions using diverse materials. He made a number of drawings from postcards and photographs that reflect his interest in the stylistic conventions and static character of posed photographs. In 1921 he simultaneously painted several large neoclassical paintings and two versions of the Cubist composition In the winter of 1935 Picasso became intimately involved with Dora Maar, a stunningly beautiful, passionate and acutely intelligent young woman. Dora's influence was to stimulate one of the most innovative periods of his career. His personal life was in turmoil when they met: he had broken up with his wife Olga Koklova, a ballet dancer with the Ballet Russes; and Marie-Thérèse Walter, his mistress since 1927, had given birth to their daughter, Maya. He felt incapable of painting and instead devoted his creative energy to writing poetry. Picasso and Dora had a complex personal and artistic relationship that spanned the intense period from the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War to the end of the Second World War. Dora Maar was already established in Paris as an acclaimed fashion and publicity photographer, before her involvement with Picasso. Dora's photography and the experimental techniques she employed were a source of inspiration to Picasso. He began to take photographs of her that were the catalyst for a whole series of works that blended photography with printmaking in an entirely new manner. Using photographs of Dora as a starting point, Picasso painted several portraits on glass before exposing them over photographic paper to create unique and surprising photographic impressions. He extended the process by further scratching into the images on glass plates to create different effects. By placing lace, tissue and other fabrics between the glass plate and the photographic paper, Picasso was able to build up novel and unprecedented multi-layered compositions. It is interesting to ponder whether Picasso would have made these unique, experimental works if he had not met Dora. Woman holding book The Kiss Dora Maar

he Khajuraho Groupof Monuments in Khajuraho, a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, locat- ed in Chhatarpur District, about 620 kilometres from New Delhi, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The name Khajuraho, ancient “Kharjuravahaka”, is derived from the Sanskrit words Khajuraho which means date palm and vahaka equals to “one who carries”. Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic sculptures. The temples are mainly known for its sexually explicit sculptures. The Khajuraho group of monu- ments are made out of local sand- stone, each piece painstakingly carved just perfectly so as to fit together solely by the force of gravity. The walls of the monuments are cut so perfectly that the building holds itself up with no use of mortar to keep the blocks of stone held togeth- er. The more impressive is the detail that can be seen on the statues. More than simply naked sandstone people along the walls, there are innumerable depictions of intercourse, and many stone couples intertwined in coitus. The temples serve as monuments to various Hindu Gods. What is espe- cially interesting is the fact that such sexual imagery was not considered to be shocking or obscene to the people T 75

are performed withinthe temples. The celebration of the marriage of Shiva and Parvati takes place every year, which is a large foundation of the Hindu faith. The ceremony involves many rituals of fertility, one of which included the bathing of a large stone phallic symbol in milk, butter, yogurt, and other products of who built the structures. Rather, sex- uality was the way of the gods. For one to have sex was to be holy. This is an interesting contrast to the way most western religions view sexual- ity. As something that one should be ashamed of, and to hide away. The Khajuraho temples contain sexual art outside the temple or near the deities. Some of the temples that have two layers of walls have small erotic carvings on the outside of the inner wall. It has been suggested that these suggest tantric sexual practices. Some 10% of the carvings contain sexual themes and those reportedly do not depict deities but rather sexual activities between people. Those depictions show women putting on makeup, musicians, potters, farmers, and other folk. The mundane scenes are all at some distance from the temple deities. A common misconception is that, since the old structures with carvings in Khajuraho are temples, the carvings depict sex between deities. There are themes drawn from tantrism and from the form the “Kama Sutra” that perhaps served as a visual manual for happiness and pleasure. The eroticism also perhaps could ward off the threats of the amorous rain god Indra. The tem- ples additionally commemorate the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, whose union formed the basis of cosmic en- ergy and are replicated in the human sexual act. Today the temples are a UNESCO world heritage site, and are still use still used to, with many ceremonies a cow, which is regarded to be sacred in Hinduism. This is done with much care so as to prepare the groom (Shiva) for the wedding. It is fol- lowed by dressing the stone itself, and anointing it in the common tradition. In essence, this event, which is highly sexual in nature, is the crux of the Hindu creation story. The temples are also are a tour- ist destination for those who wish to view the statues and cavernous interiors of the temples, making it a major site for Indian tourism. The monuments are also host to a dance festival, which features traditional dance performances from some of the most well-known performers in India. The Khajuraho Dance Fes- tival, held every year in the first week of February (1st to 7th), is an opportunity for visitors to experience various classical Indian dances set against the backdrop of the Chi- tragupta or Vishwanath Temples. The M P Tourism Development has set up kiosks at the Khajuraho railway station (which is 9 km away from the city), with helpful tourist officers to guide the travellers. The temples in Khajuraho are broadly divided into three parts : the Eastern group, the Southern Group and the Western group of temples of which the Western group alone has the facil- ity of an Audio guided tour wherein the tourists are guided through the seven eight temples. There is also an audio guided tour developed by the Archaeological Survey of India which includes a narration of the historical data related to the temples. 76
