The document is a progress report submitted to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for a project aiming to standardize the measurement of alpha-synuclein in human samples. The report indicates that partners have worked to standardize the materials and methods used in an assay for measuring alpha-synuclein levels. They have selected the best raw materials and characterized multiple purchases to improve reproducibility. Further experiments are still needed to fully validate the assay.
Health care and life sciences research heavily relies on the ability to search, discover, formulate and correlate data from distinct sources. Over the last decade the deluge of health care life science data and the standardisation of linked data technologies resulted in publishing datasets of great importance. This emerged as an opportunity to explore new ways of bio-medical discovery through standardised interfaces.
Although the Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies help in dealing with data integration problem there remains a barrier adopting these for non-technical research audiences. In this paper we present FedViz, a visual interface for SPARQL query formulation and execution. FedViz is explicitly designed to increase intuitive data interaction from distributed sources and facilitates federated as well as non-federated SPARQL queries formulation. FedViz uses FedX for query execution and results retrieval. We also evaluate the usability of our system by using the standard system usability scale as well as a custom questionnaire, particularly designed to test the usability of the FedViz interface. Our overall usability score of 74.16 suggests that FedViz interface is easy to learn, consistent, and adequate for frequent use.

Discussion: Research Project Review consists of presenting your Results and Discussion sections of your Research Project and providing professional feedback to your peers. These activities will enable you to continue honing your scientific writing skills (being concise and precise) and using the systematic organization of a professional empirical paper. It forces you to consider research results within a bigger picture – how do findings fit, contradict, and expand our current understanding in the field? Try to see multiple perspectives in the interpretations to avoid confirmation bias. Sharing your research findings with the scientific and lay community is essential to expanding our understanding of mental processes and behavior, with the ultimate goal of bettering the lives of ourselves and others. Receiving and providing constructive feedback related to scientific writing is a professional skill that deepens as one’s knowledge of research methods and statistics expands. As we near the end of this course, this is your chance to illustrate your deepened understanding of these concepts. See the Instructions document for further information.

Sun Coast Remediation Course Project Guidance
Background
To help make a connection between business research and its use in the real world, this course
will use an iterative course project. Throughout the term, you will serve as the health and safety
director for Sun Coast Remediation (Sun Coast).
Sun Coast provides remediation services to business and governmental organizations. Most of
their contracts involve working within contamination sites where they remove toxic substances
from soil and water. In addition to the toxicity of the air, water, and soil their employees come
into contact with, the work environment is physically demanding and potentially contributory to
injuries involving musculoskeletal systems, vision, and hearing. Sun Coast genuinely cares about
the health, safety, and well-being of their 5,500 employees, but they are also concerned about
worker compensation costs and potential long-term litigation from injuries and illness related to
employment.
Health and Safety Director Task
Sun Coast hired you last month to replace the previous health and safety director, who left to
pursue other opportunities. This is a critical position within the company because there are many
health and safety-related issues due to the nature of the work. The former health and safety
director was in the midst of analyzing these issues through the implementation of a research
project when she left the organization.

Introduction
Note: The following introduction should remain in the research project unchanged. Delete this note before you begin.
Senior leadership at Sun Coast has identified several areas for concern that they believe could be solved using business research methods. The previous director was tasked with conducting research to help provide information to make decisions about these issues. Although data were collected, the project was never completed. Senior leadership is interested in seeing the project through to fruition. The following is the completion of that project and includes the statement of the problems, literature review, research objectives, research questions and hypotheses, research methodology, design, and methods, data analysis, findings, and recommendations.
Statement of the Problems
Note: The following statement of the problems should remain in the research project unchanged. Delete this note before you begin.
Six business problems were identified:
Particulate Matter (PM)
There is a concern that job-site particle pollution is adversely impacting employee health. Although respirators are required in certain environments, PM varies in size depending on the project and job site. PM that is between 10 and 2.5 microns can float in the air for minutes to hours (e.g., asbestos, mold spores, pollen, cement dust, fly ash), while PM that is less than 2.5 microns can float in the air for hours to weeks (e.g. bacteria, viruses, oil smoke, smog, soot). Due to the smaller size of PM that is less than 2.5 microns, it is potentially more harmful than PM that is between 10 and 2.5 since the conditions are more suitable for inhalation. PM that is less than 2.5 is also able to be inhaled into the deeper regions of the lungs, potentially causing more deleterious health effects. It would be helpful to understand if there is a relationship between PM size and employee health. PM air quality data have been collected from 103 job sites, which is recorded in microns. Data are also available for average annual sick days per employee per job-site.
Safety Training Effectiveness
Health and safety training is conducted for each new contract that is awarded to Sun Coast. Data for training expenditures and lost-time hours were collected from 223 contracts. It would be valuable to know if training has been successful in reducing lost-time hou.

Research studies show thatevidence-based practice(EBP) leads to higher qual-
ity care, improved patient out-
comes, reduced costs, and greater
nurse satisfaction than traditional
approaches to care.1-5 Despite
these favorable findings, many
nurses remain inconsistent in their
implementation of evidence-based
care. Moreover, some nurses,
whose education predates the in-
clusion of EBP in the nursing cur-
riculum, still lack the computer
and Internet search skills neces-
sary to implement these practices.
As a result, misconceptions about
EBP—that it’s too difficult or too
time-consuming—continue to
flourish.
In the first article in this series
(“Igniting a Spirit of Inquiry: An
Essential Foundation for Evidence-
Based Practice,” November 2009),
we described EBP as a problem-
solving approach to the delivery
of health care that integrates the
best evidence from well-designed
studies and patient care data,
and combines it with patient
preferences and values and nurse
expertise. We also addressed the
contribution of EBP to improved
care and patient outcomes, de-
scribed barriers to EBP as well as
factors facilitating its implementa-
tion, and discussed strategies for
igniting a spirit of inquiry in clin-
ical practice, which is the founda-
tion of EBP, referred to as Step
Zero. (Editor’s note: although
EBP has seven steps, they are
numbered zero to six.) In this
article, we offer a brief overview
of the multistep EBP process.
Future articles will elaborate on
each of the EBP steps, using
the context provided by the
Cas.
Programs Coming Together Using ExamSoft to assess interprofessional education...ExamSoft
Presented by: Carla D. Hernandez, Assessment Coordinator, and Anthony C. Marziliano, Associate Director of Assessment, and Marc E. Gillespie, Ph.D., Professor, Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research, St. John's University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences
Professional health science programs must now explicitly identify interprofessional education (IPE) activities that provide unique opportunities for student-to-student engagement. Offering IPE activities is essential to advance education in these fields. We actively identify IPE possibilities and a methodology to assess them using ExamSoft’s categorization system. Our faculty are content experts and are in the best position to categorize test-items with national exam blueprints, the essential hierarchical ontologies that drive programs. Blueprints contain goals, outcomes, knowledge domains, professional skills and attributes often required for proficiency in specific health care professions. Mapping between different program blueprints allows the College to identify parts of the curriculum that are shared between programs and are ideal targets for IPE efforts. We provide worked examples where we observed overlapping terms that serve as an impetus for faculty and administrators to capitalize, creating IPE opportunities. By the very nature of this activity, overlapping terms are associated with test items that can be used to establish a pre-IPE activity baseline, as well as, assess the IPE activity itself. Synergistic assessment of shared goals and outcomes (using ExamSoft categories) helps us prepare our students to be outstanding health care professionals in the 21st century.

MSD®
has joined other partners in an effort to standardize the way alpha-synuclein is measured
in human samples. An “assay” for measuring alpha-synuclein is built from raw materials. MSD
has performed the necessary experiments to select the best raw materials to use. In addition,
MSD has characterized multiple purchases of the raw materials, since our experience shows
that this leads to greater reproducibility of the assay. A thorough understanding of the MSD
assay will require a lengthy set of experiments called a “validation”. MSD is currently in the
process of performing those experiments.
