The American Cancer Society is pleased to announce a from the Highmark $50,000 grant Foundation, to support two local Federally Qualified Health Care Centers to help reach more patients with the HPV vaccine (human papillomavirus) information This project allows the American Cancer Society to access the health care centers, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Grafton, West Virginia and identify practice gaps, determine ways to improve tracking screening rates, develop strategies to sustain HPV vaccination efforts and expand existing quality improvement efforts.

Raising HPV vaccine rates is a huge opportunity to help protect people against 6 types of cancer. The vaccine is safe and highly effective. If all 11- and 12-year-olds were vaccinated, an estimated 90 percent of HPV cancers could be prevented.”

However, disease management and prevention programs, like this one, can lead to better health outcomes for at- risk individuals. By working together to expand capacity, this program will evolve to meet the needs of the community.”
- 7. About 14 million Americans, including teens, become infected with HPV each year. An estimated 80 percent of people will get HPV during their lives. HPV infection causes six different types of cancer: cervical, vaginal, vulvar, anal, penile, and throat cancers. Each year in the United States, more than 33,000 men and women are diagnosed with a cancer caused by HPV. There is no treatment for HPV infection, but vaccination and screening can prevent most HPV- related cancers.
