Benefits of Linux
Linux is "Open Source", which means that anybody can build their own, slightly different, versions of Linux using the same underlying programs. People gather together their own choices of these programs and offer them to the world.
Linux is a system that converts a powerful but mindless heap of silicon into something that an ordinary user can control, and which can run programs written to a common standard.
Linux can be made even more powerful when it's packaged with GUI's, other tools and utilities.
Different people can change this code to make the system better, and even sell it if they want.
If you are technical person who enjoys technology, you canât beat the freedom it gives you. If you are not a technical person then, once set up, you will have a more stable, reliable and secure system.
The real benefit of Linuxâs community approach to software, is that the community is made up of different individuals with different tastes, etc; many of whom are developers. This means that your own installing on your system can be incredibly personal and to your tastes.
The freedom of being open source is that you are completely 100% sure of what is running on your system. In terms of privacy that is pretty good. You know that there is nothing that is spying on you for advertising, marketing and other sinister companies.
2
Linux Derivative Recommendation
For an all-round rock-solid experience for general use, Debian is the best due to its universal nature.
It runs it 10 different architectures and comes with a huge (the biggest, actually) collection of pre-compiled software in its repositories, ready to install.
Based on what packages you install or remove, you can totally transform an already installed Debian to be most suited for any kind of work.
I recommend Debian simply because it can be the best choice no matter what you want to use it for.
It is also good for network servers, popular for personal computers, and has been used as a base for many other distributions.
Arch Linux is that your system is exactly what you make it - you decide exactly which packages you want. The end result of this is that your system is custom tailored to your computing experience and necessities. This also has the added advantage of being an extremely flexible distro.
With Arch Linux, you have unlimited choices for every aspect of your machine. If you are a proponent of Free Software, you can elect to only use free packages. If you don't want or need a full desktop environment, you can elect to use a minimalistic window manager.
3
Linux Graphical Interface
When it comes to a GUI on Linux, you have a number of options and most of the distros offer multiple GUI version built in.
So depending on your taste, youâre not spoiled for choice; making your question rather redundant.
X (also called X11) is responsible for GUI in Linux.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Donât worry, we can help with all of this!
Weâll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. Weâll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally weâll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered

This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power gridâs behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
What to expect
For the upcoming meetup we are organizing, we have an exciting lineup of activities planned:
-Insightful presentations covering two practical applications of the Power Grid Model.
-An update on the latest advancements in Power Grid -Model technology during the first and second quarters of 2024.
-An interactive brainstorming session to discuss and propose new feature requests.
-An opportunity to connect with fellow Power Grid Model enthusiasts and users.

Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
Â
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.
Dive into the realm of operating systems (OS) with Pravash Chandra Das, a seasoned Digital Forensic Analyst, as your guide. đ This comprehensive presentation illuminates the core concepts, types, and evolution of OS, essential for understanding modern computing landscapes.
Beginning with the foundational definition, Das clarifies the pivotal role of OS as system software orchestrating hardware resources, software applications, and user interactions. Through succinct descriptions, he delineates the diverse types of OS, from single-user, single-task environments like early MS-DOS iterations, to multi-user, multi-tasking systems exemplified by modern Linux distributions.
Crucial components like the kernel and shell are dissected, highlighting their indispensable functions in resource management and user interface interaction. Das elucidates how the kernel acts as the central nervous system, orchestrating process scheduling, memory allocation, and device management. Meanwhile, the shell serves as the gateway for user commands, bridging the gap between human input and machine execution. đ»
The narrative then shifts to a captivating exploration of prominent desktop OSs, Windows, macOS, and Linux. Windows, with its globally ubiquitous presence and user-friendly interface, emerges as a cornerstone in personal computing history. macOS, lauded for its sleek design and seamless integration with Apple's ecosystem, stands as a beacon of stability and creativity. Linux, an open-source marvel, offers unparalleled flexibility and security, revolutionizing the computing landscape. đ„ïž
Moving to the realm of mobile devices, Das unravels the dominance of Android and iOS. Android's open-source ethos fosters a vibrant ecosystem of customization and innovation, while iOS boasts a seamless user experience and robust security infrastructure. Meanwhile, discontinued platforms like Symbian and Palm OS evoke nostalgia for their pioneering roles in the smartphone revolution.
The journey concludes with a reflection on the ever-evolving landscape of OS, underscored by the emergence of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and the persistent quest for innovation and efficiency. As technology continues to shape our world, understanding the foundations and evolution of operating systems remains paramount. Join Pravash Chandra Das on this illuminating journey through the heart of computing. đ

Ubento Notes â Part 2
Ubento Desktop â Part 2.1
Install VMware Tools â Part 2.2
Ubento Server and ownCloud setup â Part 3
Install ddclient â Part 3.1
What is Ubento? Itâs my Ubuntu remix with ownCloud. Right now it
is just a VM (Virtual Machine) playable using VMware Player 5
(which is free for non-commercial uses) or VMware Workstation 9
(which is not free).
I will get more in-depth as to what Ubento is, what customizations I
have added and how you can do them all yourself but first I just
want to explain what this is, why you might want it, and how you
can get it working right now.First, let me sell you on this. But note I
am not trying to sell you anything â all software provided is free.
But feel free to make a donation because it is not easy putting
these kind of things together.
Also, if you want to hire me to create one of these for you, or to
help you troubleshoot issues related to this, please feel free to
contact me. If you have general questions about how to install this
and get it working or you are caught on a step, please comment
here and I will answer as best I can. Ok, now why would you want
this? This whole project revolves around ownCloud and my desire
to replace Dropbox with two important things:
1) A much larger amount of space than the free 2 to 5 gig offered
by Dropbox, Google Drive and Skydrive. I want 100 gigs or more

of available sync storage.
2) I also donât want my valuable info on anyone elseâs servers. I
want to host my own files.
It also had to have all (or most) of the functions of Dropbox like file
sync and it had to work with Windows, Linux and Mac.OwnCloud
was my solution to all of this (and more!). It is a great piece of
software and the developers deserve your thanks and donations
so that they can continue to provide this great software to us
unwashed masses.
Ubento is basically just the Ubuntu operating system (Linux)
version 12.04 (with long term support). It came out of my desire to
have my very own Linux distribution, although this is nothing of the
sort since it is basically still just a customized Ubuntu. But my ideal
was a version of Ubuntu with a few user-friendly tools built in. I am
not trying to create a version of Ubuntu like Mint, which is
extremely use friendly. But I wanted something between Ubuntu
and Mint. A good platform for Linux newcomers, with a slightly
gentler learning curve than Ubuntu. So what can this image do? If
you download it and start it up in VMware player you can start
syncing files to it in a mater of minutes. But it does so much more!
It is a full version of Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server with
LAMP (which stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and Php). So it is
a functioning web server with a desktop user interface. This is
somewhat unusual but let me explain why. Normally, people
hosting websites are very experienced with the Linux server and
they can do most everything by command line. If they added a
desktop user interface, it would use valuable resources, memory
etc that would normally go towards hosting websites.
So why does this release offer a desktop user interface? I am
trying to offer this Ubuntu + ownCloud image to people without
extensive Linux experience.
4. 6/26/13 4:38 AMUbento with ownCloud â Part 1 | Ben Costello
Page 4 of 11file:///Users/steven/Documents/Ubento%20with%20ownCloud%20â%20Part%201%20%7C%20Ben%20Costello.html
It is idea for people who just want to try out ownCloud on their own
system or for developers (especially beginning developers) who
want to try their hand at hosting websites and doing a little
experimenting with HTML, CSS, MySQL and Php. All of that is
included and ready to go. It doesnât require a big set up. Just
follow a few simple steps (below) and try your hand at Linux, web
developing, web hosting, and ownCloud hosting.Hopefully, now
you have a good idea of what this is and what it does but there are
even more options.
Included in the files and posted here are all the steps I took to
customize Ubuntu, install Ubuntu Server, install LAMP and install
ownCloud.
What I donât cover are the very basics of Linux, VMware or web
hosting. I guess I assume you know these things but I will try to
speak as basically as I can when I am discussing them. Also,
unless you are paying me to customize and/or troubleshoot this for
you then I have done all of this for free with free software, so
please no complaining. This is really more of a teaching tool than
anything. It isnât intended for âproductionâ. It is more for a testing
and learning environment.
Ok, so now we are ready to get started. Download Ubento here:
http://www.ben-costello.com/Ubuntu_12.04_v1.zip
Next, download and install VMware Player:
https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/5_0
5. 6/26/13 4:38 AMUbento with ownCloud â Part 1 | Ben Costello
Page 5 of 11file:///Users/steven/Documents/Ubento%20with%20ownCloud%20â%20Part%201%20%7C%20Ben%20Costello.html
If you are new to Linux you may want to read up on some of the
basics. Lifehacker is always a good resource for stuff like this:
http://lifehacker.com/5778882/getting-started-with-linux-the-
complete-guide
You may want to visit the Ubuntu site to download your own
Ubuntu image or read up on Ubuntu: (although you donât need to
download Ubuntu, as my image is an already working version of
Ubuntu)
http://www.ubuntu.com/
And you may want to read up on ownCloud or your own version:
(although you do not need to download ownCloud because my
image already contains the files)
http://owncloud.org/
You may also want to read up on installing ownCloud, not because
you have to install it yourself (again my image has an already
working version of ownCloud) but you may want to read up on the
installation of ownCloud because it will help you understand how
ownCloud works and it offers notes and other tips for
troubleshooting and for further customization:
http://owncloud.org/support/install/
Then you will want to download the client software for ownCloud,
which is what syncs the files on your ownCloud server to all of
your other computers. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux:
http://owncloud.org/sync-clients/Once you start the VMware image
in VMware log in using:
Username: user
Password: qwer1234Then open the web browser and browse to
http://localhost/owncloud/

Share this:
And again log in with:
Username: user
password: qwer1234You can then create a new username and a
new password and start getting everything else set up. It is not
imperative that you read the next few parts but in order to get
everything set up correctly all of this info will be helpful.I am sorry if
I have gone in-depth too much but I am trying to make this as user
friendly as possible.
And remember if you would like for me to create one of these
VMware images for you with all custom usernames and passwords
etc or for more in-depth troubleshooting I will set things up and
answer all questions for a small fee.
Also, if you like and use this image please consider donating to
fund my continued development of this package. Also, consider
donating to ownCloud and Ubuntu who developed all of this
software for free.
Please feel free to donate any amount to help future development
of this VMware image and hopefully in the future a full Linux
distribution. This is not in payment for any software, as it is all free,
nor for any work done by Ubuntu, ownCloud and others. It is a
donation to me for the work in this tutorial and the work done to
compile this VMware image. Thank you.

Linux is a lot of fun. For me it increased my knowledge of
all operating systems by starting to use Linux because you
spend the time trying to do something in Linux that you
would do in Mac or Windows and you simultaneously learn
more about all three.

Linux is interesting. Still hard to get things to work.
Been trying to get Zentyal (Ubuntu server 12.04 LTS)
SBS (gui server interface) + FreeNAS (storage) +
Owncloud (storage accessible anywhere) +
OpenVPN (have vmdk images, hard to get all
running), but struggling on my own.
Iâm a windows tech (looking for a Win 2012 alternate)
trying to figure out how seamless it is to switch my
knowledge over. While I got the concepts, getting the
Linux to work (with heavy leaning on Google) is not
easy.

Thanks for the comment. I am a Windows Tech
myself but I have been forcing myself to learn
Linux for a number fof reasons. But I have found
that the experience is completely different from
that of Windows. You can do virtually the same
thing but how you do it can be very different on
Linux.
Learning command line and many of the most
used command line statements is a good start.
Did you see the link I had to Lifehacker on this
page? It is a good introduction to Linux but they
also have some other cool tutorials.
Also, I am coming out with a new VMware image
with updated Ubuntu and OwnCloud. I am taking
requests for additional software to be added. Is
there anything you would like to see in a new
image?
Good luck and come pack with anyquestions.

Your image is great & I very much like the 100 GB.
Traditional services like google, yahoo, etc use encryption
to send/pull data especially when your sending calendar,
contact info, or critical work files. Is there a simply way to
update the settings for SSL (Https)? I read the owncloud
documentation several times, but I have yet to get it to
work right. Thanks

from scratch (meaning just with an Ubuntu disk and the ownCloud
install files).
To install ownCloud we first need to install Ubuntu (or Ubento)
Server, we are upgrading Ubuntu Desktop to Ubuntu Server with
Desktop gui. I do this because this VMware image is intended for
beginners and running Ubuntu Server without the desktop gui etc
can be very intimidating.
These are the steps that I took to install Ubuntu Server and the
LAMP server, which stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and Php.
Then I unzip and configure ownCloud and then we are ready to
start hosting it.
A major change I made in this ownCloud setup is that I moved the
ownCloud âdataâ directory out from inside the âwwwâ folder which
is the web viewable directory. I did this for two reasons.
1. It is more secure if it is not in the var/www directory
2. I made a completely new partition âdataâ which can expand up
to 100GB and this is where all of your ownCloud files get synched.
Since it is the last partition on the Virtual HD it is also easier to
expand the HD to an even bigger size if needed. Just expand the
HD size in the VMware settings hard drive utilities. Then open up
gparted and unmount and expand the âdataâ partition. Just be
careful as it is always dangerous to change a partition that you
already have files on. So maybe make a back up.
And again I did this for teaching and learning purposes and I
provide it for free (but I do welcome donations) but if you lose files
or it doesnât work for you please do not hold me responsible or
blame me.
That said I would be glad to help if your post comments, questions
or suggestions on the website: ben-costello.com
This image has 2 snapshots so far. If you would like to set up the
Ubuntu server and ownCloud yourself, thereby setting up your
own usernames and passwords, then revert to snapshot two and
set up Ubuntu Server using the following commands: (some of
these might not be necessary but this is what worked for me)
One other thing, I use the same password through out. This is
obviously not safe so you should try to change as many of these
passwords as you can. But remember if you change the
passwords on the Linux, MySQL, PhpMyAdmin side then you will

need to make password changes on the ownCloud side as well.
Upgrade to Ubuntu Server:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-server linux-image-server linux-
server
(probably not necessary) sudo apt-get install apache2 php5 php5-
json php-xml php-mbstring php5-zip php5-gd php5-sqlite curl
libcurl3 libcurl3-dev php5-curl php-pdo
Upgrade LAMP server:
sudo apt-get install lamp-server^
This will prompt you a few times
first for âYâ for yes
then password for root user for MySQL: qwer1234
then repeat password: qwer1234
then install phpmyadmin:
sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin
prompt again for âyâ
then configuring phpMyAdmin, webserver to configure: highlight
apache2 box then hit enter
configure with dbconfig-common: yes then hit enter
password of the databaseâs administrative user: same password:
qwer1234
MySQL application password for phpmyadmin: qwer1234
password confirmation: qwer1234
Ubuntu Server LAMP server set up. type âlocalhostâ or â127.0.0.1âł
(same thing) in your web browser and it should say: âIt Works!â
Great, now on to owncloud set up. This website is also very
helpful: http://owncloud.org/support/install/
Open the folder icon and browse to âDocumentsâ then right click
on âUbento Installed Filesâ and select âOpen As Administratorâ
Then right-click and copy owncloud-4.5.5.tar.bz2
The browse to âFile System->var->www
And paste owncloud-4.5.5.tar.bz2 right there.
The right click and select âOpen in Terminalâ and enter:
tar -xjf owncloud-4.5.5.tar.bz2

Page 4 of 8file:///Users/steven/Documents/Ubento%20with%20ownCloud%20â%20Part%203%20%7C%20Ben%20Costello.html
The right click in the open folder (not on top of a file) and select
âOpen in Terminalâ
Then enter:
tar -xjf owncloud-4.5.5.tar.bz2
then enter:
sudo chown -R root:root owncloud
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data owncloud
Then:
gksu gedit /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default
Then look for <Directory /var/www/> âAllowOverrideâ and change it
from âNoneâ to âAllâ
The open a new terminal and enter:
sudo a2enmod rewrite
sudo a2enmod headers
sudo service apache2 restart
We also want to make the owncloud .htaccess file writeable by
owncloud. So browser to the folder:
File System->var->www->owncloud-> then right click inside the
folder (not on top of a file) and select âOpen in Terminalâ
Then enter:
sudo chown -R root:root .htaccess
Now we want to edit our php.ini file to allow the maximum file size
upload.
First browse here:
File System->etc->php5->apache2
Then right click on the php.ini file and âOpen as administratorâ
Hit control-f and search for âupload_max_filesizeâ
change the value from 2M (2 Megabytes) to something like 10G
(10 Gigs)
The search for âpost_max_sizeâ and change that from 8M to 10G
You may want to make some other changes to the php.ini file see
the documentation for big files on the owncloud website:
http://owncloud.org/support/big-files/

When you are done click save and then close.
Now letâs create the owncloud folder on the âdataâ partition and
give it the correct permissions:
browse to:
File System->media the right click on âdataâ and select âOpen as
administratorâ
Once that opens right click and create a new file named
âowncloudâ
Then right click inside the âdataâ folder and select âOpen in
Terminalâ
Now enter:
sudo chown -R root:root owncloud
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data owncloud
You may also want to enter this in terminal:
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart && /etc/init.d/mysql restart
But it would be easier to just restart Ubento.
After we restart we are ready to start up your owncloud.
In your web browser go to:
localhost/owncloud
Now we are ready for the final owncloud set up. It will prompt you
for the following information: (I am going for the simple set up)
Username: User
Password: qwer1234
Advanced->
Data Folder:/media/data/owncloud
Database user: root
Database password: qwer1234
Database name: owncloud_12 (choose whatever you want but
donât make it easy to guess.
Database host: shouls already say: âlocalhostâ
NOW YOU ARE DONE!
The only problem now is that your set up is only viewable on this
server. Most people arenât going to be hosting this on a real server
with a static IP. I am guessing you are a home user hosting this on

a home PC. If so then here are a few things that I cannot help you
do:
1. By default I use âbridged networkingâ in VMware settings. This
should mean that your router gives out IP addresses. So first thing:
find out the IP address for your Ubento Server.
2. Then forward the ports 80 and 80 to your Ubento Server IP.
3. I am guessing that you have a dynamic IP (one that changes
from time to time). This will be the case for most of you who are
using a standard internet service provider and you are behind a
router. I use a service called Dynamic DNS hosted by dyndns.org
Using this service you can sign up for a static website name (for
free but I pay $20 a year for extra features- please support them
they are a great service!)
When you have signed up for their service and created your own
web site name (ubento.dyndns.info) for example then you can use
the software ddclient to connect to your website name and
constantly update your IP address (outside â viewable to the
world, not your internal IP). ddclient is already installed but you will
need to reconfiugre it in order for it to sync with the domain name
(website name) you set up through dyndns.org
Just follow the steps in âInstall ddclient.txtâ
This will make your owncloud accessible anywhere you have
internet. Even on iPhone, Android, Windows phone etc. It uses the
WebDAV application interface so most WebDAV should work with
this. Not to mention you can just accesss your owncloud through
the website interface without any added applications.
Donât forget that on top of syncing your IP with your dyndns
website name, you will also need to forward ports in your router!

Install ddclient â Part 3.1
Please feel free to donate any amount to help future development
of this VMware image and hopefully in the future a full Linux
distribution. This is not in payment for any software, as it is all free,
nor for any work done by Ubuntu, ownCloud and others. It is a
donation to me for the work in this tutorial and the work done to
