This document describes several types of documentaries:
- Fly on the wall documentaries observe everyday events without narration or interference to allow audiences to form their own opinions.
- Direct cinema documentaries from the 1960s aimed for objectivity without narration or staged scenes to also allow audience interpretation.
- Cinema verite documentaries from the 1960s used handheld cameras to seem lifelike but included filmmaker opinions through propaganda and interviews unlike direct cinema.
- Docusoaps follow individuals' lives like reality TV but are less realistic and use setup scenes and cliffhangers for entertainment over social issues.
A term used to describe the disruption of disbelief between audience and the cinema screen. The actors communicate directly with the viewers, including them briefly in the action or emotion, to create new meaning. It's highly entertaining, possibly a guilty pleasure, but can also lead to philosophic approaches to life on screen. This was my pitch presentation for my mixed media dissertation at university.

The New Grammar of Motion Pictures.
Motion Pictures. Motion pictures, unlike our previous print media, required the audience to develop new skills of media use in order to use the product. Previous media all had a well-trained public to use and understand their products: print had people trained to read in school, recorded music had people used to local performances in music. Motion pictures had no precursors in how to interpret or use pictures that moved and told a story. Today we are going to look at this unique mass medium in how it developed its audience, how it standardized its product, and how it became a global product.
I. Motion Pictures are a mass medium that had to develop its audience to understand it's product.
A. Visual literacy had to be taught to audiences. Films then moved steadily from very simple construction to much more complex as audiences became experienced and literate.
1. Visual movement was so new that early audiences were thrilled by the simplest films.
a. Earliest films were short and simple, usually only a single scene, such as this.

b. The final scene of The Great Train Robbery scared people who were unused to motion pictures. They treated it as a real threat by a gunman.

c. The big-budget film "Intolerance" failed because it's plot with 4 parallel stories was too difficult for audiences to understand then. Intolerance
d. Any modern film, such as Star Wars or Interstellar, would fail if shown in the 1910's because the audience was not highly film literate. Popular films were like these below.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
2. FLY ON THE WALL
The camera is often unnoticed or ignored, so that as events happen they can be recorded. This
type of documentary doesn't often have any narration so the audience are often left to make
their own judgements and opinions for themselves. To get a day-to-day view on airports and
hospitals, a technique of direct cinema such a fly on the wall is used to achieve this. This is often a
very popular genre which entertains yet informs the audience any maybe even criticises of the
represented work places.
3. DIRECT CINEMA
This style of documentary was produced in the 1960’s; this was because of the audio visual equipment
which was portable and cheap. This tried to achieve no objectivity, as it had no narrator or made up
scenes it is real life people doing real life activities, thus allowing the audience to make up their own
opinion on the events displayed. Authored documentary is the opinion of an induvial person which
creates a direct contrast to the traditional documentary type.
The rules of direct cinema are:
- Interviews were not allowed to be included.
- There were no rehearsals before filming.
- No commentary or any staged acts.
- No lights for filming
- No dissolving edits to be used.
4. CINEMA VERTITE
This was used in the 1960’s and was a European film making technique which uses styles such as
hand held cameras to make sure that the documentary gave of a life like and realistic feel. Unlike
direct cinema in cinema vertite the filmmaker opinion is often voiced by using thing such as
propaganda and interviews which direct cinema is not allowed to use.
Examples of this are:
“Don’t look Back”1968- D A Pennebaker
“Gimme Shelter” 1970- Albert and David Myles
5. DOCUSOAP
These often follow the lives of individuals, who often have designated occupations. An example of this
is the programme ‘Driving School’ which reached 12.45 million viewers.
- These are made for viewing pleasure and entertainment rather than reality.
- People often act fake or play up to the camera’s often using famous celebrities or people who are
made to act to certain things to make entertainment.
- Does not normally cover any serious topics like social issues and mainly focuses on everyday
problems.
- Some scenes are purposely set up, and do not contain any reality in whatsoever.
These are often similar to a soaps because of the features they use:
-Fast paced editing.
-Creating a cliff-hanger so that viewers want to watch what is going to be happening next week.
-More than one main narrative (multi-strand narrative)
6. DRAMA DOCUMENTARIES
These documentaries raise the audiences attention to a disturbance of justice or social issues,
and are scripted and rehearsed. These can also be filmed following particular people such as
‘Ghandi’.
Examples of this are films such as:
-Hillsborough 1977
-Roots 1977
7. VIDEO DIARIES
This originates from direct cinema and is seen as truthful and honest by an audience, as the film
maker is producing it themselves. When using surveillance technology for entertainment
(infotainment) this is called and off-shoot. This creates a voyeuristic nature, examples of this are
programmes such as: Cops with cameras and Police camera action.
8. THEATRICAL DOCUMENTARIES
These documentaries are released straight into cinemas.
These type of documentaries normally star celebrities or famous people such as ‘Never Say
Never’ starring Justin Bieber.
Provocative film documentaries have become increasingly popular, this is when a
characteristic narrator also appears on the screen, for example Supersize Me by Morgan
Spurlock.
Authorised documentaries are making there way back, this is when the documentary is
scripted and purely made to display the viewpoint of one particular person.
9. MOCKUMENTARY
Using the documentary format for comic effect or either:
- Parodying the genre
- Parodying an area of life
- Or a combination of both
