The original name for Twitter was "twttr", inspired by Flickr and SMS short codes. It launched publicly in July 2006 after being developed internally at podcasting company Odeo. The first tweet was sent by Jack Dorsey on March 21, 2006, which read "just setting up my twttr." Twitter gained worldwide popularity, reaching over 100 million users posting 340 million tweets per day by 2012. It was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Noah Glass, and Christopher Isaac "Biz" Stone.
