Twitch began in 2007 as Justin.tv, a livestreaming platform for various video content. In 2011, it spun off its gaming content into Twitch.tv. Twitch's timing positioning it for the rise of gaming content and esports streaming. It grew rapidly, reaching over 55 million monthly users and 1.5 million streamers by controlling 43% of the $3.8 billion game streaming market. Twitch was acquired by Amazon in 2014 for $970 million. It now faces competition from YouTube Gaming and Microsoft Mixer, but remains the dominant platform for game streaming.
