June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. WHAT IS A TV SOAP?
• A television Soap is a serial drama on television which features related storylines about
the lives of many characters which are interconnected together, the stories usually
focus on emotional relationships to the point of melodrama. The name soap opera
stems from the fact that many of the sponsors and producers of the original dramatic
serials' broadcast on radio were soap manufacturers, such as Dial Corporation, Procter
& Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Lever Brothers. The specific definition is a television
or radio drama serial dealing typically with daily events in the lives of the same group
of characters.
3. FIRST TV OPENING: HOLLY OAKS
• Characters: There are many different characters shown in the opening credits, these are the
main ones who appear in every episode as we follow them through their daily lives. The
order of the characters shown vary between years of episodes as there is not primarily a
main protagonist in TV Soaps. They do not give a name to the characters shown on screen
as they assume you have watched previous episodes.
• Locations: They are shot in a green screen and have items in the background which relate
to the characters. So they not shot in any locations but a variety of locations are shown for
a character such as one of them is in a club which infers that the character likes to party a
lot, Another shot is of a young teenager in a room with a gaming controller which gives an
insight into the character.
C
5. HOLLYOAKS
• Shots and movement: The type of shots do not vary much and most of them are either mid shots or
wide shots, for example they begin with a close up of a character then pan out to a wide shot to show
off the character in their setting which helps establish them and signify to the audience who they are
or they reverse it and end with a shot of a close up this can tell the audience they will be vital to the
episode. The camera never moves and is placed in the middle while they show the collection of shots.
• Graphics and texts: There are no physical sets in the opening credits and only features graphics which
are computer effects of the settings which change as the characters do. Most of the shots are
graphics which is how the titles are told. There is not text featured up until the title is shown.
• Narrative: There isn’t much of a narrative as it only shows a collection of characters and it follows
them but nothing story wise happens and the credits end with the title “Hollyoaks”. We can infer that
there is an abundance of characters and we will go to many locations.
T
7. NURSE JACKIE
• Characters: The opening title sequence only features the main character : Jackie and
only aims on her, this shows that the show will only star her character and the other
characters will only be on the side and supporters character. It does list the other
actors involved in the show but that is the only reference to other characters.
• Location/settings: The opening only takes place in one location which is the hospital
as this help explain to the audience where the show will be set, and can help convey
that the main character is a nurse. There are no shots of any other location which can
mean that we never really exit that location in the TV soap compare to Hollyoaks which
takes place in a number of locations.
9. NURSE JACKIE
• Shots and movements: There is variety of shots, especially on the main character, such
as a close up, medium shot over the shoulder shot, extreme close up etc. They also
move the camera around which aims on specific objects which would be used in the
hospital.
• Graphics and sets: As mentioned there is only one set which is the hospital but a
variety of graphics are used to move the objects which are shown to be flying around
which would all play a part in the show/
• Narrative: Similar to Hollyoaks there is real narrative but it is a sequence which shows
her character getting ready and at the end is fully equipped for when the episode
begins. This gives an insight into the type of character she is
10. NEIGHBOURS
• Characters: The opening begins with a close up of the street where Neighbours is set.
• Then we move to the first characters are a family which feature two parents and a young
child. This would suggest that these are some of the main characters but in this show there
is no specific main character. The background gives an insight to characters as well which is
them in a garden, which tells what they do in their spare time during the show. We then
cut to the next set of characters who are an elderly couple having lunch outside. We then
have a family with another couple with a teenager who is dressed in seductive clothes.
• Locations/settings: What is consistent in the opening is that it all takes place outside which
is what happens in Neighbours, especially in gardens where the characters are placed. Also
another feature is that the weather (pathetic fallacy) is always sunny which connotes the
tone of the show.
13. NEIGHBOURS
• Shots and movement: There is a pan shot from the sign Ramsey street which shows
that all the locations they go to are all on the same road hence the name “Neighbours”
and this keeps going until they reach the title of the episode.
• Graphics and text : The text is used for the characters using the logos colour which
also has the name of the actor/actress below. There are not many graphics and it is
more focusing on the titles instead.
• Narrative: The story is not given a lot of explanation of from the opening but you can
interpret elements such as of the scenes is of two teenagers trying to have a
conversation (perhaps in a relationship) and they look into the connection between
characters.
15. OPINIONS ON THE OPENINGS
• The different shows ( Hollyoaks, Nurse Jackie, Neighbours) have similar conventions
which have music play while they introduce the main characters. The most unique is
Nurse Jackie as this show has clear main protagonist while the others do not as they
only have shots of Nurse Jackie. They are all are of similar length and are a quick
introduction to the show. They all end with the title of the show which would appear
before the first scene of the show, this lets the audience know this is a soap rather than
a single camera drama which starts much differently.
16. SINGLE CAMERA DRAMA VS TV SOAP
• A single camera drama usually has episodes that are not all ties together and each one
can stand on its own rather than to compared to TV soap which is more connected and
takes more episodes to understand what is going on in the plot.
• One difference in conventions is that a soap begins with familiar opening as shown but
a Single camera drama usually brings us right into the action.
SCG V TV SOAP
18. MY SOAP OPENING
• It will be based in school/college following students, there is no main character but it
follows all students, with teachers not the main focus like waterloo road and not just
four characters (The inbetweners).
• I will have different types of characters who will be in different locations which will
represent there characters.
19. TV SOAP
• It is about a character who has powers and uses them in
secret to complete missions and solve mysteries while also
dealing with problems in his home and school life, who
struggles to balance both, we follow our main protagonist as
he tries to complete many different problems in his life and
not tell anyone about his mutant ability.
