Skins Series 5 trailer-How does representation drive the narrative and the technical codes used?We see young people; black, mixed race and white, male and female. They are naked at the start of the trailerThey are falling through the air which connotes that the characters are falling into danger, on a path that will lead to their inevitable downfall. The fact that they start off naked suggests that they are very animalistic and don’t know how to think like a rational human being as clothing is a human characteristic. The fact that the eventually fall into their clothes suggests that they are slowly learning how to act as decent human beings.
We see the young people throughout the trailer suggesting that they are the main characters in the programmeThe young people start off falling in a black hole, with the fall seeming to be never-ending but eventually coming to an end as we see the doll breaking into pieces as it hits the ground. This suggests that everything comes to an end; they cannot act recklessly anymore as they have to learn to become responsible adults.
There is no clear reason as to why the young people are represented in this way but the fact that they are falling suggests that they have done bad and irresponsible things with the fall being the punishment for their actions. The music which is solemn contains vocals which repeat “and now I’m ready to start”. This could suggest that the young people are preparing to grow up in order to be accepted in the grown up world. Eventually the music speeds up it’s tempo with a heavy bass and drum beat which represents the fast approaching door to adulthood. The young people and clothes falling through the air represents the hectic and mad lifestyle which the teens were living. The short edits which move quickly to each shot varying from long shot of the young people falling to close ups of their individual faces.
