Edmond Dantès, a 19-year old first mate, reassures the ship's owner Monsieur Morrel that the ship Pharaon's voyage went smoothly despite the captain's death at sea. However, the ship's supercargo Danglars attempts to undermine Dantès by accusing him of wasting time stopping at Elba. When confronted, Dantès explains he was fulfilling the dying captain's request to deliver a package. He is cleared of wrongdoing. Morrel is impressed with Dantès' honesty and character, and declares that after consulting his partner, Dantès will be named the new captain of the Pharaon.
