Writing Process
Writing Process
 Writing is a process through which you discover, organize and communicate
your thoughts to a reader. This process gives you a chance to compose, draft,
rethink, and redraft to control the outcome of your writing. The general steps in
the writing process include
1. Pre-writing
2. Organizing ideas
3. Drafting
4. Revising
5. Editing
6. Making a final draft
Writing Process
 Each step has different activities that will help you get your ideas down on
paper in an organized fashion.
 Pre-writing is a way to generate ideas and gather all your thoughts about the
topic.
 Organizing involves sorting ideas in a logical manner to write a draft.
 Drafting is the part of the writing process in which you compose sentences
in paragraph form to produce the first copy of your essay.
Writing Process
 Revising is one of the most important steps in writing a paper and involves
smoothing out your writing, adding more detail, and making other changes that
will help you say what you want to say in the best way.
 Editing: Checking for mechanical problems and correcting them is called
editing.
 Making a final draft is the process of deciding that the draft is ready for
your intended audience.
Pre-writing
 Pre-writing: the prewriting chart lists six useful activities to help you begin a writing
project.
 Talking
 Free writing
 Brainstorming
 Journal writing
 Reading
 Searching the internet
Pre-writing (Cont.)
1. Talking: One simple way to relieve anxiety and start the writing process is to talk about a
subject with fellow students, family members and other knowledgeable people who can
provide the inspiration or the information you need to begin writing. Talking helps you
express idea that later can be put onto paper.
2. Free writing: Free writing is writing anything that comes to mind about your topic. It is
writing without stopping to correct spelling or other grammatical errors. One idea usually
leads to another and you may soon find your page filled with many different ideas. Free
writing brings out many different thoughts. This technique can be used when you are trying
to find something to write about or to get more ideas about a chosen topic.
3. Brainstorming: Brainstorming is writing words or phrases that occur to you spontaneously.
This is also to generate and gather ideas about the given topic.
Pre-writing (Cont.)
4. Journal writing: Journal writing is recording your daily thoughts, inspirations and
emotions in a notebook. Writing in this matter gives you an opportunity to connect with
important thoughts, analyze your life environment, relieve writing anxiety and practice
spontaneous writing. This can provide you ideas that you may use in later writing assignments.
5. Reading: Reading magazines or newspapers can help you get started with your writing.
While doing so, you can get an idea about your topic. Reading can also help you get ideas to
support your paragraph or essay. This might be necessary if you do not have enough firsthand
information about your topic.
6. Searching the internet: Another practical and accessible source you can use to find
written information is the internet. Through the internet, you can access many places and get
much information about the topic.
Organizing
 Organizing is the second major step in the writing process. After you have
completed one or more of the pre-writing activities, it is time to think about
organizing these ideas into a rough outline that includes a main idea and
supporting ideas. Before you use these ideas to compose your essay, you
need to decide which details support the main idea and in what order these
ideas need to be presented. As you sort these details into groups, you are
organizing your information. This step in writing process, which involves
putting similar ideas into groups, is called clustering.
Outlining
 Outlining involves identifying a word or phrase that represents a group of
related ideas and then arranging these words or phrases in the order in which
you want to discuss them.
Drafting
 After you have organized your ideas in the form of an outline, you are
prepared to write a first draft. Drafting involves taking the information that
you have generated and organized and writing an essay in which you start
with the main ideas and add supporting ideas that flow smoothly.
Revising
 Revising means to make changes to clarify wording and organization. The
revision of the essay should be done several times. Here are some possible
questions to ask yourself when you are revising the essay:
1. Does the general word or phrase (or a similar one) from the cluster appear in
the first paragraph?
2. In the rest of the essay, are there words, phrases or sentences that are not
related to the main idea?
3. Does the essay make sense to the reader?
4. Can some words be changed for clarity?
5. Are there some words repeated excessively?
Editing
 Before you consider your paper finished, check for any error in the essay.
 The following list contains some of the items you want to check.
 Spelling
 Punctuation
 Capitalization
 Grammar usage
 Errors in sentence structure
 Abbreviations and numbers
Final Draft
 You will make all the final changes in the essay related to the above-
mentioned points. After that you prepare the final draft which is ready for
the reader to go through.
