In reviewing the curricula of various Universities, one will find few, if any, classes that meaningfully consider the increasing assimilation of technology with the human. If an education predicated on assumptions of human nature is made without a meaningful consideration of transhumanism, can it remain relevant in a future where technology may render false these very assumptions? How can the question of human enhancement be introduced as a topic of more widespread academic deliberation? This talk will also discuss current efforts in this arena.
Kevin Jain is an undergraduate at Harvard University, and is Founder and President of the Harvard College Future Society, a student organization interested in evaluating the impact of future technologies on the human and humanity. He is the Student H+ Summit Coordinator, and helped organize the H+ 2010 Summit at Harvard. He plans to graduate with a special concentration in Transhumanism.

This two-week course is designed to teach scientists key skills and tools and the most effective ways to use leading-edge supercomputers to further their research aims."
Edward Seidel is the Vice President for Economic Development and Innovation for the University of Illinois System. The U of I System is the state’s largest and most comprehensive public university system with universities in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield. The System’s three universities offer over 500 academic programs to more than 80,000 students. The System’s interactions with state, federal and local governments, and the private sector are significant and diverse. It is a $5.6 billion enterprise with an economic impact of almost $14 billion annually, and a sponsored research portfolio of nearly $1 billion.

Carl Bergstrom's presentation from Microsoft's Big Scholarly Data workshop held in Redmond 7/10/2015. The presentation makes the argument that the scholarly community is far too dependent on Google Scholar for the vital task of searching the scientific literature. Google scholar uses an unknown algorithm on an unknown corpus and allows neither extension nor community development. Moreover, it may not persist forever. As a step toward a solution, I propose that the scholarly community take charge of its output. Creating an open repository of full text for all of scientific publication faces copyright issues that will be intractable in the short term, but creating an open citation graph for all of science is feasible today. At the Eigenfactor Project, we specialize in using citation networks to reveal the scientific landscape. I provide a series of quick illustrations of the kinds of things we can do with large-scale citation data.
How can creative and concerned citizens tell more effective stories about the future? Make them different, deep, and diverse.
This talk by design futurist Stuart Candy from Carnegie Mellon University was given in April 2020 during the covid-19 pandemic to help launch the online collaborative storytelling experiment #FromTheFutures, hosted by Lance Weiler and the Digital Storytelling Lab at Columbia University.
