This document summarizes a project on developing translucent concrete. It lists the participants and provides an outline of topics to be covered including product screening, analysis, lifecycle, development plans, branding, cost analysis, and feasibility review. Translucent concrete is described as having light transmissive properties due to plastic optical fibers distributed throughout. Its potential uses include decorative furniture, sidewalk lighting, and subway station lighting. Advantages are energy savings and architectural aesthetics, while disadvantages include higher costs and difficult casting. The review finds it has good light transmission and strength properties making it suitable for architectural applications and lighting areas with low natural light.
5. Product idea Screening
๏ถ Translucent concrete is a concrete based building material having light Transmissive
property.
๏ถ Light transmissive property is mainly due to uniform distribution of high numerical
aperture Plastic Optical Fibres(POF) throughout its body.
๏ถ Hence it is also known to be transparent concrete,Litracon.
6. New Product Analysis
โข The development of new building materials is a crucial for promoting the
development of green energy efficient buildings.
โข It is based on the excellent properties of light guiding of resin materials, a new type
of resin translucent mortar-based concrete (RTMC) was researched; meanwhile,
transmittance properties, mechanical properties, and thermal performance were
studied, respectively.
โข The results showed that the resin material possessed excellent light transmittance
within the thickness of 100 mm, which can be as high as 93%. Moreover, when the
area ratio was within 5%, the compressive strength of RTMC was close to that of
plain concrete
7. Product Life Cycle
1. In 2001 the idea of translucent concrete was found by Hungarian architect Aron
Losonczi
2. Successfully produced in 2003,named Litracon.
3. In 2004, he started a German company, named Litracon and started producing
Litracon commercially.
4. 2010, the Italian Cement Group developed a new type of light-transmitting
concrete
12. Product Feasibility & Review
๏ In furniture for the decorative and aesthetic purpose.
๏ Light sidewalks at night.
๏ Increasing visibility in dark subway stations.
๏ Lighting indoor fire escapes, in the event of power failure.
13. โข Energy saving can be done by utilization of transparent
concrete in building
ADVANTAGES
โข It has very good architectural properties for giving good
aesthetical view to the building
DISADVANTAGES
โข The concrete is very costly because of the optical fibres.
โข Casting of translucent concrete block is difficult for the
labor, so special skilled person is required.
14. ๏ The transparent concrete has good light guiding property and the ratio of optical
fiber volume to concrete is proportional to transmission.
๏ The transparent concrete does not loose the strength parameter when
compared to regular concrete and also it has very vital property for the
aesthetical point of view.
๏ It can be used for the best architectural appearance of the building. It can also
be used in areas, where the natural light cannot reach with appropriate
intensity.
๏ This new kind of building material can integrate the concept of green energy
saving with the usage selfsensing properties of functional materials.
