West Virginia University follows a semester calendar. Grade points for all
classes are awarded based on a 4.0 scale. Plus/minus grading is utilized,
but does not affect the calculation of the grade point average (with the
exception of the College of Law).
In compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, this
information is released on the condition that the recipient “will not permit any
other party to have access to such information without the written consent of
the student.”

COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM FROM AUGUST 24, 1970
A – Excellent
B – Good
C – Fair 1-99 – Courses intended primarily for freshmen and sophomores.
D – Poor but passing 100-199 – Courses intended primarily for juniors and seniors.
F – Failure 200-299 – Courses for advanced undergraduate students and selected
UF – Failure graduate students.
IN – Failure (abolished Summer II 2001) 300-399 – Courses for graduate students and selected, advanced undergraduates.
IF – Failure (established Fall 2001) 400-499 – Courses for graduate students only.
INC – Permanent Incomplete (Graduate and Professional Level Students only) 900 – Courses for Professional Development. (Courses do
I – Incomplete not count toward graduation/degree.)
P – Pass
S – Satisfactory COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM EFFECTIVE AUGUST 2001

1979) Any entry marked with an I has been repeated by the student under a 900-999 – Courses for Professional Development (Courses do
D/F Repeat Policy. An associated previous entry is marked with E to not count toward graduation/degree.)
indicate the deletion of credit hours and points.
The College of Law at West Virginia University uses a weighted plus/minus
grading scale. The values assigned to each grade are denoted below.
Please note that the College of Law used two different weighting systems
between 1989 and present. Both systems are denoted below along with
applicable date ranges.
Effective fall 2011, courses repeated, but not eligible for the provisions of
the D/F repeat policy (mentioned above) will be marked with an A or an I.
The A indicator on the first attempt indicates that the course is calculated in
the GPA, but removed from earned hours. The I indicator on the second or
final attempt indicates that the course is calculated in the GPA as well as
earned hours.
