Effective fall 2007 GPA is calculated for Graduate Students.
Forgiveness Policy
ECU students who have been out of school for a minimum of three
consecutive academic years may request special readmission.
Subsequent GPAs of students readmitted under this policy will be
computed without inclusion of previous coursework in which a grade below
C was received, noted as indicated in the Undergraduate Grading System.
However, this work will be included in calculations for consideration for
degrees with distinction.
Grade Points and Grade Point Average
Grade Points are computed by multiplying the number of semester-hour
credits by the number of quality points awarded for each letter grade. The
GPA is obtained by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the
total number of semester hours attempted. The only exception of this is
when the student is using either the Grade Replacement Policy or
Forgiveness Policy.
Grade Replacement Policy
A student is permitted to use the Grade Replacement Policy a maximum of
four times for 1000- and 2000- level courses in which he or she has
earned a grade below C. Although the original grade will not be used in
determining the GPA of the student, the original grade will remain on the
student’s permanent academic record and will be included in the
calculation for consideration of honors. The replacement grade, or last
grade, stands. Students receiving an F on the replacement grade must
repeat the course if credit is required for graduation. In the event that the
original grade was a D, no additional hours will be awarded.
Undergraduate Probation and Suspension Codes
A student who is not meeting the required scholastic eligibility standards
will have one of the following codes printed on the permanent record.
#2 Academic Warning - This code indicates that the student is
performing at the required scholastic level at the present time; however,
continued performance at this level will, upon the attainment of the next
retention period, result in academic probation and inability to graduate
during the normal time frame.
#3 Academic Probation - This code indicates that the student has not
met the required scholastic standards. If the deficiency is not removed by
the end of the next semester of enrollment, the student will be declared
academically ineligible to return.
#4 Academically Ineligible - This code indicates the student’s
scholastic performance has not met the requirements necessary to
continue enrollment.
During a period of probation or suspension, a student is eligible to attend
summer school at East Carolina University. In this way a student may
establish good standing during a period of probation or suspension.
Entitled to Honorable Dismissal
Unless Otherwise Stated
