ACCREDITATION
Southern Illinois University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of
the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
UNIVERSITY CREDIT
SIU converted to the semester hour system the Fall Semester of 1974. One
semester hour is equivalent to 1 ½ quarter hours.
From 1930 through the Summer Semester of 1974, SIU used the quarter hour
system. One quarter hour is equivalent to 2/3 of a semester hour.
Prior to 1930, SIU used the term credit system. One term credit is equivalent to 2
½ semester hours or 3 ¾ quarter hours.
Some hours may be in parentheses, indicating that the credit may not be counted
in fulfillment of degree requirements at this university.
A student registered as unclassified is not working toward a degree at this
university.
GRADUATION
Degrees are awarded at the end of Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Two
graduation ceremonies are held annually (Fall and Spring). A minimum of 120
semester hours is required for a bachelor’s degree.
TRANSFER CREDIT
SIU transcripts for undergraduate students will show the hours and GPA
accepted from the prior institution. Transfer work for Graduate School students
will show the grade accepted with the prefix GT (Graduate transfer; Example:
GTA, GTB, etc.).
ACADEMIC RENEWAL PROGRAM
Grades received prior to acceptance in the Academic Renewal Program were
excluded from the GPA for the remainder of the student’s career, for retention
and graduation purposes. Please refer to the undergraduate catalog for more
