course with the “*” are subtracted from the cumulative totals.
# Repeated course-All earned hours for the course with the “#” are subtracted from the
cumulative totals
2. CREDIT LEVEL AND COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM
“U” – Undergraduate courses numbered 100(0) & 200(0) level are lower division; 300(0) &
400(0) level are upper division; 300(0) & 400(0) level courses are used for Graduate
credit if preceded by a “G” in credit level.
“G” – Graduate level courses numbered 500(0) are graduate level, however, any 500(0)
numbered courses with a “U” credit level are used as undergraduate credit.
“L” – Law course
“V” – Veterinary Medicine course
3. COURSE TYPE – Blank=Regular Credit ADM=Admissions Deficiency Met
AP=Advanced Placement Credit CLP=College Level Exam
COP=Co-op Credit COR=Correspondence Credit
HON=Honors Credit MIL=Military Credit
PRF=Proficiency Exam NON=Non-credit
DP=Departmental Placement Credit HNRS=Honors by Contract
4. TRANSFER POLICY – (Effective Fall Quarter 1985) – Transfer hours are counted for
degree programs but are not computed in UTK’s GPA for courses transferred after
Summer Quarter, 1985.
5. GOOD STANDING – Unless otherwise noted by dismissal, student is in good standing
(eligible to enroll).
6. GRADES, COLLEGE OF LAW – Effective Fall 1969, the College of Law began using a
numeric grading system. Fall 1969 numerical grading: 3.6-4.0=A, 2.6-3.5=B, 1.6-2.5=C,
0.6-1.5=D, 0.0-0.5=F.
Effective Fall 1980: 3.6-4.0=A, 2.6-3.5=B, 1.6-2.5=C, 1.0-1.5=D, 0.0-0.9=F.
Effective Fall 1996: Excellent/A+=4.3, A=4.0, A-=3.7, Good/B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7,
Satisfactory/C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, Poor/D+=1.3, D=1.0, D-=0.7, Failure/F=0.0.
7. CALENDAR SYSTEMS – Unless otherwise noted, all course work completed prior to Fall
Semester 1988 is under the quarter system and all work completed after Summer Quarter
1988 is under the semester system. College of Law course work completed after Spring
Quarter 1981 is under the semester system.
8. ACCREDITATION – The University of Tennessee is accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools.
