Trans hiatal esophagectomy was performed on a 59-year-old female who presented with dysphagia for esophageal cancer in the middle third. The surgery involved mobilizing the stomach through an abdominal incision. Her recovery was uneventful. A 70-year-old man also underwent trans hiatal esophagectomy for cancer in the mid and lower esophagus, with an uneventful cervical anastomosis between the esophagus and stomach. He presented with 1 month of dysphagia and was a heavy smoker. Biopsy confirmed squamous cell carcinoma and pre-operative staging found no lymph node or liver metastasis.
