Cognitive therapy was developed by Aaron Beck and can change one's brain by altering thoughts and beliefs. A study in 1989 compared cognitive behavioral therapy to antidepressant medication and placebo for treating depression. It found that cognitive therapy was as effective as antidepressants and more so than placebo in reducing depressive symptoms over 16 weeks. Regularly practicing activities like meditation, exercise, learning new skills, and recalling memories can help train and strengthen the brain.
