The bank has supported the program for two years and over a dozen executives will volunteer in the next two weeks. Additionally, the Hamel Family has established a $25,000 scholarship through the USHJA Foundation to support the further education of equestrian members. The Fill Your Bucket List Foundation aims to create lasting memories for cancer patients living in poverty by granting their wishes. In 2015, there will be over 1.6 million new cancer diagnoses and nearly 600,000 cancer deaths in the US. Some studies show those in poverty are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and have a higher mortality rate due to lack of access to resources. The Foundation granted the wish of Jimmy, a country music fan with brain cancer, to visit Nashville which he and his wife greatly enjoyed and found relieving from his daily cancer struggles. People are encouraged to donate to grant wishes of others like Jimmy.
The History & Principles of Patient Navigation
Patient navigation began in 1990 at Harlem Hospital to address disparities showing poor and underserved patients experienced later-stage cancer diagnoses and lower survival rates. The navigation model guides patients through the healthcare system by eliminating barriers. Research shows navigation improves cancer screening participation and reduces time to diagnosis. The National Cancer Institute and Affordable Care Act have supported navigation, and it is now a standard of care to improve outcomes for vulnerable patients.

The Large Urology Group Practice Association (LUGPA) supports men's rights to access appropriate prostate cancer screening. New guidelines from the American Urological Association recommend screening for men aged 55 to 69 and consider risk factors for younger and older men. Statistics show that widespread prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing since the 1990s has increased prostate cancer survival rates while decreasing death rates. LUGPA supports customized screening for individual patients rather than banning PSA testing.

It highlights that the organization supported over 1.5 million patients and families, invested $3.7 million locally, launched a new website, and expanded outreach to African American and Latino communities. Major events included the Undy Run/Walk series that raised $1.9 million across 18 cities, the national conference that engaged 225 attendees over two days, and March activities for Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Chapters in Arizona and Rhode Island advanced awareness, screening, and support in their states. Financial support programs distributed over $100,000 in aid to patients.
National Center for Health in Public Housing Presentation - May 2012
The National Center for Health in Public Housing recently sponsored the 2012 Health Care for Residents of Public Housing National Training Conference on May 1 -3 at the Westin Hotel in Alexandria, Virginia.
The Citywide Advisory Board Health Planning Committee presented a workshop entitled: Improving Health among Public Housing Residents in the District: A Resident Driven Process. The panel consisted of DCHA resident leader, Kenneth Council, who chairs this committee, and Committee members, Diana Lapp, Deputy Chief Medical Director of Unity Health Care; Robert Grom, Chief Development Office and Deputy Director of the DC Cancer Consortium; and Charles Debnam, Director of Health Education Services at Breathe DC. Julian Wilson of the Office of Resident Services moderated the panel discussion.
Panelists shared highlights of the committee’s work, including:
• Residents partnering with DCHA, the DC Department of Health and many other District health-related organizations to implement a resident-driven community health needs assessment
• Collaboration on efforts to address the District’s high rates of cancer and tobacco-related health issues.
• Coordination of data collection and reporting on specific health challenges facing DCHA public housing residents;
• Dissemination of information on health screenings and support services
• Collaboration with UDC as the lead applicant in the development of a grant application to HUD for improvement of asthma management
• Introduction of the Langston Gardening Club (LGC) to program managers at DOH which enabled LGC to make a grant application to expand its efforts and introduce community gardening to other public housing and low-income communities
• Because of the particular severity of health problems in Wards 7 and 8, partners have met with senior officials at both the Children’s National Medical Center and the United Medical Center (UMC) in an effort to coordinate services
Panelists were united in their agreement that much more work must be done to improve the health of DC’s public housing residents. Participants gained valuable knowledge to take back to their own comes
Based upon pre- and post- session testing, attendees reported that they found the workshop very useful and gave it a most favorable evaluation.

Colorectal cancer screening rates in West Virginia remain below national averages, with only 63.5% of residents over 50 receiving appropriate screening. West Virginia faces numerous challenges to increasing these rates, including a largely rural population with limited access to healthcare, high rates of poverty, smoking, and other cancer risk factors. However, numerous organizations are working together through the Mountains of Hope Cancer Coalition and other initiatives to help West Virginia achieve the national goal of 80% colorectal cancer screening rates by 2018 by implementing widespread screening programs, raising awareness, and improving access to care.

Developing Partnerships and Recruiting Dyads for a Prostate Cance
This document describes the development of partnerships and recruitment efforts for a prostate cancer education intervention program for African American men and women. A community-academic-clinical team was formed to guide the project. Focus groups were conducted with 81 African American men and women to understand current knowledge and attitudes about prostate cancer screening and research participation. Based on focus group findings, a four-week education program was developed and implemented for 56 of the original focus group participants. The goal was to assess changes in knowledge and attitudes about prostate cancer and research after the education program. Lessons learned from the recruitment strategies could help promote cancer research participation among minority communities.
