12. We stepped into a new world in 2014. It happened
without fanfare, without a TV mention, without
a Wall Street jump, and it didn't even trend on
Twitter. But for the first time in history, card and contactless
payments surpassed cash transactions.
Historically, as technology evolved, the banking industry
always kept pace in integrating those new technologies in
order to better serve their customers. But all of that changed
during the financial crisis of 2008. During the crisis, banks
were focused on dealing with new rules, regulatory
requirements and fines imposed on them. Innovation
became a distant priority.
But in the same duration, some of the most game-changing
technological innovations evolved. We were introduced to
new platforms and products that changed the way we lived
our lives, from the iPhone to Airbnb to Uber to Seamless.
They quickly became integrated into our day-to-day
experience.
Consumers began to expect more from their financial
institutions. A gap was created between 'what your banks
offer you' and what you as a customer came to expect from
a user experience and convenience perspective.
That 'gap' is what the FinTech industry is focused on
capturing right now. However, the gap was so large that
even non-traditional banking players decided to join in and

business leader Helen Child (Founder) through her

(OBE).

In an interview with Insights Success, Helen shared details
about her journey of founding OBE. And, she also spoke
about how the community is proactively contributing to the
development in finance management in various sectors.
Below are the highlights of the interview:
Helen, please give us a brief overview of your journey as
the Founder of Open Banking Excellence.
The story of Open Banking Excellence (OBE) began at a
networking event sponsored by Fintech Scotland. Men in
kilts were serving warm wine to 38 fintech pioneers, and I
found myself talking to people whose ideas and passion
really excited me. It became clear to me that Open Banking
was the future. I was asked to gather everyone together to
share more stories and learnings - which I did. Now we are
a global community of more than 15,000 people.
The role of OBE is to bring together banks, fintech,
regulators, and other industry stakeholders to learn, share
stories, debate, and - above all – collaborate. We started in
the UK but are now going global and have recently
expanded into Brazil.
In September 2021, we introduced the world to our
Brazilian familia at a campfire featuring a panel of experts
made up of representatives from OBIE, Accenture, Banco
Central Do Brasil, the Department of International Trade
and others. I am really proud of the success of OBE in
Brazil, particularly because until we started working there, I
had never set foot in the country. It is a truly wonderful
place with a very exciting ecosystem. The UK was a
launchpad for Open Banking and it is inspiring to see other
countries building their own blueprints and driving the
sector forward.
Tell us more about your company its vision, and the key
aspects of its stronghold in the Open Finance and Open
Banking space.
At OBE, we believe that working collaboratively gives us a
much stronger voice. We exist to enable collaboration and
the exchange of ideas. We are also behind some of the
biggest global stories in fintech. We are at the heart of the
world's Open Banking community and enjoy a strong
relationship with the journalists covering the latest trends
and developments.
As an authoritative voice within our community, each
month, OBE engages with key industry leaders within our
global community at our Campfires. This allows pioneers to
share lessons they learned whilst navigating roadblocks
fuelling innovation, grapple with new ideas and collaborate
on solving industry challenges.

What are the core values upon which your company is
built?
We seek "red-hot relevance" and lead change within our
sector. OBE is inclusive, committed, focused, and
responsible. We are mindful, authentic, and trustworthy,
with a purpose in everything we do. We believe in shining
the spotlight on others. Passing the mic is in our DNA.
We have always believed that financial exclusion is a
fundamental challenge that needs to be tackled by the wider
fintech sector if it wants to evolve further in the next decade
and be seen as a key enabler for lower-income people. After
all, as we heard at a Campfire in 2021, open data includes
us all.
OBE is also committed to sustainability. This means we
work to offset our own carbon footprint by working with
Lune. But we also allow the Open Banking community to
discuss best practices and share ideas on how to build a
greener industry.
At a Campfire last year, we discussed successes in ESG and
explored green initiatives in Open Banking and Finance. It
really does pay to go green, and we are honoured to be
working with pioneers who are working on the sustainable
future of finance.
Diversity is embedded at the heart of everything we do. Our
community is global, and we invite pioneers from across
the planet to join the conversation. We are also passionate
about supporting female talent. There are some incredible
female leaders and pioneers working in the Open Banking
space. We shout about their work and give them a space to
share their stories, learnings, and innovative ideas.
Within OBE, we are proud to have a team made up of
inspirational women and men who are working to share the
growth trajectory of the community. OBE is a global centre
of community and knowledge, driving change in Open
Banking and Finance. Diversity is a powerful enabler of
this mission.
As an established industry leader, what would be your
advice to the budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts
aspiring to venture into the financial services sector?
We are inspired by a quote from Lord Richard Dannatt, who
said: "Aim high, be the best, courage is key."
Collaboration is fundamental to entrepreneurship and
innovation. When you reach out to others, you genuinely
never know what could happen. Remember to have
boatloads of fun along the way!
How do you envision further strengthening Open
Banking Excellence's stronghold in 2022 and beyond?
OBE is behind some of the biggest global stories in fintech.
We are at the heart of the world's Open Banking community
and enjoy a strong relationship with the journalists covering
the latest trends and developments. There are now over five
million active Open Banking users in the UK alone, and our
sector's global footprint is rapidly growing. In April, we
will launch The OBE Constellation, a valuable resource for
our friends in the media as they navigate the sector.
OBE is also creating the Global Open Finance Index, an
industry benchmark, through collaboration with partners
including Accenture, the Department of International Trade
(DIT), and the World Bank. This index will act as a beacon
for anyone who has an interest in Open Finance and will be
updated annually, setting up authentic benchmark referred
to by regulators, industry bodies, governments, fintechs,
financial institutions, academia, VCs, and more.
We will continue to build our presence in the Brazilian
Familia and are launching in another geographical area
soon.

years old and live in Singapore right now. As the founder, I
am responsible for managing operations, finances, and
collaborative contributions to strategy/priorities, product
and company strategy, and development projects.
If we talk about Qwaiting, it is a suitable solution that
assists firms in enhancing productivity and decreasing the
workload of managing clients.
Qwaiting is a cloud-based queue management system
specially designed to reduce customer wait time while
increasing staff productivity. The queue solutions not only
boost productivity but also increase profits and boost visitor
experience. The idea for Qwaiting came to me when my
friend and I went out to dinner and had to stand and wait for
a long time before getting seated. This was not the first time
something like this had occurred in our lives. Every time
we went to that restaurant, we wasted a lot of time. It was
quite frustrating.
People hate to wait in long lines; therefore, I created this
software to reduce small and mid-size enterprises' (SMEs')
worries and make their brands shine in the digital world.
I put in a lot of effort, did a lot of research, and studied the

Dot-com bubble. How did it affect your particular
enterprise? How did you drive your organization to

The global pandemic altered the experiences of everyone,
including employees, consumers, and visitors.
Communication between staff and clients was hampered,
resulting in negative encounters that no one expected.
Kindly tell us more about Qwaiting, its products, service
offerings, and what makes it stand apart from its
competition?
I am always keen to explore how businesses, especially
retail like banks, financial institutions, and other corporate
settings, work to manage their clients. Then, I decided to
perform comprehensive research and investigation into this
topic.
After meeting multiple personalities like a few bank
managers, restaurant owners, and other company owners, I
accumulated more knowledge about issues faced while
managing their customers.
My aim developed to create a cutting-edge solution that
would reduce client wait times and eliminate lines while
giving an easy and reliable experience. My primary goal
was to provide an enjoyable waiting experience while also
reducing costs, increasing sales, and improving brand
reputation.
I started Qwaiting after becoming sufficiently aware of the
issues that businesses and their customers faced.
What kind of services and specialized offerings do you
facilitate to your clients? What are the USPs of your
company?
Our Qwaiting solution is a cloud-based queue management
software that is known to reduce customer wait times.
We offer an appointment scheduling system that streamlines
the bookings. It allows customers to schedule appointments
at their convenience. Scheduling, canceling, or rescheduling
the bookings is easy. Thus, enhancing customer experience
and reducing their hassles of standing in long lines.
Another solution we provide is a Virtual Queuing system. It
helps customers schedule mobile tickets, monitor real-time
progress, and lower in-person visits. Simply put, our virtual
waiting line management solution reduces wait time, boosts
staff efficiency experience, and enhances exceptional
customer experience.
Lastly, we have a QR code queue system. A QR code queue
system streamlines the waiting process for varying
businesses. The customers scan the QR code, and sooner
they receive the SMS sent by the business on the
confirmation of their place in a virtual queue. This reduces
the need for physical lineups of the crowd on-premises and

place. After all, maintaining social distancing measures was
and is the only key to ensuring safety while keeping the
business running. The flexibility of work from home was
given for the tasks that could be executed online. On the
other hand, low-priority tasks were kept on hold.
To keep up with the customer experience, we allowed
customers to book their places in queue remotely and alert
them via message when it was their turn. All this kept the
congestion low and both the customer and employees safe
from the virus.
What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs
who aspire to venture into the business solutions and
customer experience industry?
One piece of advice I would provide to anyone thinking
about launching a project is to approach it analytically and
with the correct marketing abilities.
The ability to recognize when brilliant ideas fail is the most
important skill a business person can possess. Being in a
position like this, on the other hand, may help you deal with
all of your problems. All that remains is for you to research,
market, analyze, and deliver your goods and services to
your target market.
Make sure you are saying the appropriate things about your
company and what you want to achieve. And it is in this
manner that you will reach the highest level of
achievement.
Where do you envision yourself to be in the long run,
and how do you plan on scaling your company in the
future?
As an entrepreneur, my main aim is to serve businesses of
all types and sizes with an efficient queue management
solution that goes beyond expectations.
I always motivate workers to live up to their own words and
build customers' trust. Recording all the activities and
approaches helps preserve ideas for future use. All this can
be applied to employees, finances, ideas, and everything
else for which the business is liable.
I also believe focusing on building relationships and
reaching maximum businesses other than target industries is
beneficial. This will help to exchange ideas and help scale
up the offerings in distinct niches.
