Editor's Notes
1. Are you using technology to benefit your research? Or is digital scholarship leaving you behind?
This session will present range of non-electronic but primarily electronic resources used in academia.
This will include technologies for finding and organising research materials and presenting your research.
By the end of the session you will have an idea of what these technologies can do for you and which are most appropriate for your research.
You will find out how to get started on using your chosen suite of technologies to support your research needs.
2. Research tools can be used at every stage of the academic research process. Whatever stage you are at with your PhD, there will be a tool/technology which could help you.
It is also part of a new academic skill set that is becoming increasingly expected. The tools are contributing to new academic behaviours. While there is still a place for ‘traditional’ channels of collaboration and dissemination, e.g. face-to-face networking at conferences, peer-reviewed journal articles, there has been a dramatic increase in online networking, finding and reading research electronically, online conferencing etc. Postgraduate students need to be aware of these skills/tools whether they are keen to enter academia or not. Research activity (and many areas of work) is now mobile, social, online, collaborative, and instant.
3. How many of you have smartphones? These devices are definitely tools that could or do, should represent your research identity. And the fact that research is very continuous process, requiring a lot of thinking and most important documenting your ideas.
Evernote allows you to store notes, web clippings, pictures and voice recordings in online notebooks you can access from any computer. Evernote also has a range of free smartphone apps and a downloadable desktop version.
Perfect for the mobile researcher, working away from your desk etc. I can not end up this list without mentioning the phenomenal productivity Evernote which allows you to remember and act upon ideas, projects and experiences across all the computers, phones and tablets you use.
Google Drive provides a powerful productivity suite useful for teachers. You can now upload your documents, work on them collaboratively, share them with others and also access them wherever you are.
Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring your photos, docs, and videos anywhere and share them easily. Never email yourself a file again!
Producteev – syncs and works with Outlook. This is a great productivity app that helps you. Coordinate and complete tasks with your teams. Assign tasks to teammates. Add due dates, labels and notes. Follow tasks, track progress and measure the results. Create as many projects as you like, across any number of teams and participants. Keep your tasks organized and get work done.
BibmeThis is the fully automatic bibliography maker that auto-fills. It is the easiest way to build a works cited page.
Easy Bib - This is another great tool for students to help them with citing their bibliographies it includes things such as radio shows, recorded music, and even works of arts from museums.
Oregon Public Education Citation Maker for MLA This is a fantastic tool for students. It gives them the freedom to cite different kinds of sources including anthologies, story collection, and web pages.
Citation Machine. This one helps students and professional researchers to properly credit the information that they use. Its primary goal is to make it easy for student researchers to cite their information sources.
Citelighter. This is a wonderful tool that allows users to bookmark sections of webpages together with the information needed to create an APA, MLA, or Chicago style bibliography.
EndNote gives you the tools you need for searching, organizing and sharing your research. It allows you to easily create bibliographies while writing your next paper with features like Cite While You Write . Maximize your time with features like finding full text for your references and automatically updating records. Whether you’re on your desktop, online, or iPad, EndNote’s syncing capabilities let you access all of your references, attachments, and groups from anywhere.
Disadvantage – Limited search engine, some journals will not have save to endnoteweb button so needs to be either manually entered or saved in Rif, Bib formats and them imported to Endnoteweb in appropriate format. Some new journals that have own referencing style are not in the Endnoteweb database but there are style files that can be downloaded and updated within the plug in so you can you use when you are writing for particular publication.
