The Fourth Crusade began in 1202 and was intended to recapture Jerusalem for Christians. However, the crusaders ended up sacking the Christian city of Zara at the request of Venice. They then attacked and sacked Constantinople, weakening the Byzantine Empire. The crusade ultimately failed its goal and had unintended negative consequences, especially the sacking of Christian cities.
