This 6 unit lesson plan is meant to be an implementation guide to supplement the use of the Webquest, A Brutal Arithmetic - Studying the Holocaust Using Jane Yolen's book, The Devil's Arithmetic. Both English Language Arts and History Social Science standards (California Department of Education) are imbedded in this presentation and companion Webquest. Both the lesson plans and the Webquest are primarily geared for inclusion in Writers Workshop and Literature Circle activities geared toward Grades 5-8.
My creative nonfiction course, Narratives We Think We Know: American Women's Stories through Letters, is now offered with only Open Educational Resources (OERs). I actively sought out two professional development opportunities (IMTL and a Lumen Fellowship) to continue OER development work and design an open forum to allow for students and the public to write their own creative nonfiction responses to the letters we explore in the course. For this presentation, I will share course materials, samples of student work, as well as lessons learned from the OER design process and other research on women’s letter writing.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

11. After the opening discussion, I will explain that they will be working in groups to create different visuals related to the novel. (55 minutes)
12. Group 1 will be instructed to construct a relief map of Maycomb County in Google Maps. Include homes of the main characters, and other landmarks of the county. They will present their map to the class. I will provide an example of what their map should include and what it should look like. I will also explain how to use Google Maps to create this map.
13. Group 2 will collect poems, songs, stories, etc. dealing with prejudice/discrimination of any kind and create a video and present it to the class. I will work with them to answer any questions concerning the making of the video and will provide them with an example of what their video should look like.
14. Group 3 will use the Internet, magazines, encyclopedias, books, etc. to find pictures and make a collage depicting acts of discrimination and kindness as well. They will also present their collage to the class. I will bring in extra magazines for them to thumb through and will provide an example of what their work should look like. I will also provide poster board, scissors, and glue for them to use in making their collage.
15. As the groups work on their projects, I will walk around the room, facilitating their work and answering questions they have concerning the use of different software or questions related to the book.

17. Summative – Groups will receive some sort of grade based on how well they tie into the theme of discrimination and racial prejudice as well as their creativity in creating their work.
