Scout recounts the events of Halloween night in her diary. While walking home from a party with Jem, they are attacked by a man in the dark. During the struggle, the man is killed. Boo Radley emerges and carries the injured Jem to safety. The man is identified as Mr. Ewell. Though Jem's arm is broken, Scout is thankful Boo was there to help and that the ordeal is over.

2. Entry One
Dear Diary,
Today is my first day of school and I am so excited. Jem has agreed to take
me to the schoolhouse and the whole way I was bouncing almost out of my shoes. I hate
wearing shoes. I usually walk around barefoot, but today Atticus said it was a “special
occasion”, like church or something.
When I got to the school house, Jem told me not to ever bother him at school
and to always stay with the first graders. I didn’t like that very much and wondered if we
would still be able to play at home.
School was a total disappointment. Miss Caroline didn’t seem to like me very
much and made me learn the alphabet all over again when I can read perfectly fine. She
was only twenty one and had just moved into town so she didn’t know about any of the
town’s family history. She didn’t know that Walter’s family was extremely poor and that
the Ewell children only ever showed up to the first day of school. I felt sorry for her when
she started to break down but it will take some time for me to forgive her for hitting me
with the ruler.
Dear diary, I hope school gets better soon or I might have to quit. Atticus says I can’t but I
just cannot stand the fact that I am not allowed to read. I will try to be nicer to Miss
Caroline but I just feel she doesn’t like me very much.

3. Entry Two
Dear Diary,
Dill appeared outside our house today. There were only two weeks left until
summer vacation but Dill said he just couldn’t wait. I am so happy to have him here.
When I asked Dill why he snuck away from home, he said it was because his
parents would never pay attention to him. Thank god Atticus is nothing like that. He will
always talk to me and he treats me like I am an adult.
Dill called his parents this morning and after much pleading, his parents
agreed that he could stay until summer vacation. I love spending time with Dill. Even
though sometimes he ignores me and just wants to go play with Jem.
Dill brings back memories of looking into the Radley house. Every summer we
would spend hours on end thinking about what Boo Radley was doing in that basement
of his. We thought he had turned into a wild animal. After a while, we lost interest and
stopped bothering him. But now that Dill is back, my curiosity about the Radley house
has been rekindled and I am excited to start exploring again.
Calpurnia is calling me now to go to dinner. She yells a lot and always seems
to favor Jem.

4. Entry Three
Dear Diary,
It snowed yesterday morning. It was the coldest weather since 1885. Jem and I
ran outside and let the snow touch our cheeks and tough, dancing in its beauty. This was
a fairy tale for me. School was canceled and after breakfast, Jem and I went outside and
tried to make a snowman.
This was one of the rare moments where Jem and I were connected again. I
remember being the best of friends before, but now Jew has grew past me and moved
on. He does not especially like spending time with me and is always moody.
The next morning (today) I woke up suddenly. Atticus lead me outside and onto
the street. I knew there was trouble coming. It showed in his voice and in his eyes. Miss
Maudie’s house had caught fire. Luckily nobody was hurt but it was still a sad day in our
neighborhood.
The fire had ruined everybody’s mood. Our excitement about the snow turned to
anguish. It was because of the snow that the fire truck could not arrive. I wish the snow
had never fallen.
Today is a sad day.

5. Entry Four
Dear Diary,
Today was the day of the trial. Aunt Alexandra had forbid Jem, Dill and I to go and watch but
we went all the same. Since there were no seats left in the white section, we sat up with the blacks.
How many looks we got I lost count after fifty. But the African American folks treated us mighty kind.
They knew Atticus was helping Tom Robinson.
As soon as it had begun, I knew we would win. Mr. Ewell had a poor argument. Atticus threw
question after question at him and they each struck the mark. Straight on the bulls eye.
At that moment I felt so proud for Atticus. To know that he was my father and always will be.
I’m proud that my father treats everybody with respect and believes in rights for all.
Sadly, that’s not how everybody thinks around here. It turns out that the jury thought he was
guilty and he was sentenced to a few years in jail. But I know that Atticus will not stop fighting. Not until
justice is served.
I love my family.

6. Dear Diary,
Entry Five
Last night Jem and I were walking home from a Halloween party at the school. I had
been wearing a ham costume that did not fit very well and had been crushed when I fell before. It
truly was a great costume, but now I didn’t want to wear it. I had been in a bad mood because I had
accidentally ruined Miss Meriwether's play and she had become a furious animal.
As I was saying, it was completely dark and we couldn’t see a foot in front of our faces.
While we were walking, we kept hearing a rustling behind us. Jem kept on pretending to be brave
but I knew he was scared out of his wits.
A man grabbed Jem from behind. I knew we were right under the oak tree because it
had been cooler than before. I started shrieking and right next to me I could hear Jem wrestling
with the stranger.
The man exhaled loudly like a balloon popping. Quiet. Another man picked Jem up and
ran with him to our house. I followed behind. From behind I could see that the man carrying Jem
was Boo. I couldn’t believe it! I wished Dill was here to see it.
Tears poured from my face. Atticus hugged me tight and I shook back and forth. For
once Aunt Alexandra had a look of understanding on her face.
The next morning life returned back to normal. Boo went back to his house and Jem
only had a slightly broken arm. Mr. Ewell was pronounced dead and it was deemed that he had
killed himself. I wish this had never happened. I felt so bad for Jem but I know that life will go on.
