This document is the first chapter of Mark Twain's classic novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It introduces the main character, Huck Finn, and establishes the setting in the Mississippi Valley sometime between 1840-1860. Huck recounts how he came to live with the Widow Douglas but finds her rules constraining. He escapes into the night, where he is found by his friend Tom Sawyer. They sneak around the widow's property and encounter her slave Jim, who frightens them but then falls asleep, allowing the boys to escape unnoticed.
