Young people today are greatly influenced by social media and spend increasing amounts of time online rather than going out. Social media allows them to connect with friends who share their interests, access global content, and participate in collaborative school projects. While some may become too addicted to technology, each generation faces its own challenges and today's youth do not experience world wars or slavery.

The response of higher education programmes to the transformative and creative spaces promulgated by web 2.0 and social media has been both inconsistent and intermittent, ignoring and embracing the potential for collaboration, knowledge construction and bricolage (Franklin & Harmelen 2007; Grosseck 2009). Outside the constraints of a Virtual Learning Environment and the University firewall, web 2.0 can support a deconstruction of the role of the teacher, a significant re-evaluation of the way knowledge is constructed and shared and a dramatic re-thinking of the inter-connections between learners, the crowd and their wider, separate networks in which learning can also occur (Downes 2009; O'Reilly 2003; Siemens 2005).
This case study will look at the use web 2.0 and social media in the design and delivery of the BA Professional Practice programme at Middlesex University. The programme utilised a set of enhanced literacies centred on a do-it-yourself inquiry philosophy, the application, sharing and reflection upon social experiences and the construction of professional identity, ‘for’ the practice of work, ‘at’ the practice of work and ‘through’ the practice of work (Garnett & Workman 2009; Hanley 2011; Kamenetz 2010).

Human beings are faced with numerous choices every day. These choices vary from the most trivial ones to the most important ones. One important choice (probably after the choice of becoming born again) is the marital choice, especially the choice of whom to marry. One phenomenon that is influencing people’s choices in this modern age is the social media in particular and the Internet in general. The social media and the Internet have influenced many facets of human endeavours. The contemporary marriage is not exempted from this influence. As a matter of fact, many people are now using social media to meet and connect with others and some of such connections have led to marital choice and marriage. This article aims at looking at social media and the Internet and how they are affecting the contemporary marriages both positively and adversely.

This is a workshop about communication and collaboration. We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2).
This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.

- 2. Places to meet then and now
- 3. Social media Nowadays youth is greatly influenced by social media. Types of social media: social networking sites (Facebook) blogs/microblogs (Twitter) content communities (Youtube) collaborative projects (Wikipedia) virtual game-world (League of Legends) virtual social worlds (Second Life)
- 4. Mobile social media Connection to social media is in almost every persons pocket. Smartphones are becoming more and more popular among young people and some of them already can´t imagine life without it. Around 5 billion mobile phones in the world. 1,08 billion are smartphones.
- 5. Why do young people choose to spend time online more and more rather than to go out somewhere? ● There is nothing interesting to do in their hometown ● It is cheaper to spend time in some online game (lots of games are absolutely free) ● People find friends with same hobbies and interests online faster than in real life ● Social network is a place where people can show themselves as they like them being seen by other network users.
- 6. ● People gain access to content that is not available on their national television (Korean TV series never seen on Estonian national television) ● Some media are only available in social networks ● Many school projects are done through collaborative projects ● There are people who are not accepted by the society (e.g. they are being bullied, unable to trust people they become lonely and social media is their only connection with world)
- 7. Being young nowadays - getting worse? ● Every generation has its own difficulties and we just have to face them. Our generation have persons who are too addicted to technology and social networks but we have to be thankful that we don´t have world war going on and in 21st century slavery is almost gone.
