2. Introduction
 IELTS is designed to assess English language skills across a wide
range of levels.
 There is no such thing as PASS or FAIL in IELTS.
 There are four skills tested: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and
Writing.
 Results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest)
to 9 (the highest).

4. Test Format
1. Types of Test:
IELTS Academic: for test takers who want to
study at undergraduate or postgraduate
levels, and for those seeking professional
registration.
IELTS General Training: for test takers who
want to migrate to an English Speaking
Country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK),
and for those who want to train or study at
below degree level.
2. Sequence of the test:
The Listening, Reading, and Writing test must
be completed on the same day.
The order in which these tests are taken may
vary.
There are no breaks between these three
tests.
The Speaking test may be taken up to seven
days before or after the other three tests.

5. The Structure of Speaking test

• The examiner introduces him/herself and asks you to introduce yourself and confirm your
identity.
• The examiner asks you general questions on familiar topics, e.g. home, family, work, studies,
and interest.
Part 2:

• The examiner gives you a task card which asks you to talk about a particular topic and which
includes points you can cover in your talk.
• You are given 1 minute to prepare your talk and are given a pencil and paper to make notes.
• You talk for 1-2 minutes on the topic.
• The examiner may then ask you one or two questions on the same topic.
Part 3:
Two-way
discussion
4-5
minutes
• The examiner asks further questions which are connected to the topic of Part 2.
• These questions give you an opportunity to discuss more abstract issues and ideas.

6. How is Speaking scored?

language and organizing ideas coherently.

• Lexical Resource: How varied your vocab is
• Grammatical Range and Accuracy: How varied your grammar is
• Pronunciation: How clear your pronunciation is
3. Reported scores Scores are reported in whole (4, 5, 6) and half bands (4.5, 5.5, 6.5)

7. General Strategies
 Make sure you are ready to demonstrate your English.
 Familiarize yourself with the format of the test.
 Practice, practice, and practice.
 Consider taking a practice test (prediction test).
 Consider joining a preparation course to improve your
performance in the test.

 Films

4) What’s your favourite film now? [Why?]

9. Additional Information
 In part 1, you will be asked questions on everyday topics, such as home, work, studies,
weather, families, sport, etc.
 When you don’t know much about a topic, you can talk about your past, your memories,
your hopes, your likes, your dislikes, what people in your country like, or what is popular.
 Your answer will be between 1-2 sentences.
 Always answer directly to show the correct use of grammar:-Q: Do you like swimming? –A:
Yes, I do. But….
 You must always add more to your answer: -A: Yes, I do. I swim mostly at the weekends
because I don’t have much time during the week due to my 5-day-work.
 Never give two or three words as an answer. Show that you have a good English so that
you will get a good score.
 Keep talking until the examiner asks the next question.
