TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
I have worked closely with Ms Sue MILLS for more than three years in her
capacity as administrator of in-country study programs in the School of Culture, History
and Language at the ANU. As I convene a range of in-country Indonesian programs, I
communicate constantly with Ms Mills face to face and by email over a great variety of
administrative matters, ranging from numerous routine procedures to problems arising in
the case of individual students before their departure, in-country, or after their return.
Ms Mills is a highly effective administrator of all these programs. She displays a
high sense of responsibility, and is very prompt at dealing with matters, responding to
email inquiries from me and from students very quickly and with careful attention.
She is also proactive: skilled at anticipating what students will need to know and at
identifying administrative pitfalls, and advising them of those issues in advance. In that
way she greatly reduces the number of problems and last-minute emergencies which
arise through student oversight.
As well as implementing existing procedures very well, Ms Mills helps to develop
more efficient ones. For example, she successfully proposed the idea of creating an in-

country study website as a central depository for information for participants on the
School’s in-country programs; and also the idea of producing a number of new
documents tailored for participants on specific programs. Ms Mills also implemented
those two proposals herself, including the task of creating professionally presented
documents providing lucid explanations for students. This has made their task of applying
for, enrolling in and departing on in-country programs much easier.
Ms Mills is also very pleasant to deal with as a colleague. She is invariably cheerful
and polite, and is exceptionally warm and caring to students. As well as dealing with their
needs energetically and promptly she demonstrates a rare and genuine concern that they
have a good study experience.
I feel fortunate to have worked with Ms Mills in my role as convenor of in-country
courses, and I am very happy to recommend Ms Mills for any position requiring the
qualities above.
Yours sincerely,
Tim Hassall
