PERSONAL PROFILE
My name is Alicia Ruth Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen. I am from a small town called Riebeek Kasteel in the Western
Cape, South Africa.
I enjoy snowboarding, art, running, and cycling. I’m interested in natural medicine and dietary lifestyles and its
effect on our health. I enjoy a wide variety of friendships across the world and as part of my background in
counseling, I find interpersonal relationships and conflict management as very interesting topics.
For two years I was privileged to be part of the Klein Nederberg High School in Paarl, the Western Cape. I
worked closely with the local church and the social worker of the area while teaching Biblical Studies and acting
high school counselor during that time.
Over the last three and a half years, I had the opportunity to teach in South Korea. There I taught all grades
(Kindergarten, Elementary school, Middle School, High School and I taught adult night classes from beginner to
advanced). Most recently (March 2015 to June 2016), I was afforded the opportunity to become part of a school
that required their teachers to develop the yearly curriculum for the entire county schools (all grades). Meaning, I
had to actively design and develop the course materials as well as the books printed for the course. All of the
materials underwent rigorous scrutiny and was perused and approved by the local EPIK School education board.
These courses are structured as an ESL support program to the county schools and students attend the programs
either as weekly students or in short course studies for 3 to 5 days.
I had the responsibility for developing the curriculums, the course materials, lesson plans, all activities, book
material and teacher training for the following programs within the school:
 Kindergarten program for both short courses and regular classes (2015-2016)
 Preschool program for regular weekly classes (2015-2016)
 Phonics and reading program for regular weekly classes (2015-2016)
 County School program (i.e. the entire Gr1 and Gr2 - 9 lessons in total as well as 7 lessons for the Gr3 to
Gr6 Elementary School and Gr1 and Gr2 Middle School programs).
 The creative writing, reading comprehension and oral testing program for the Super Kids Program for
regular weekly classes. The Super Kids program consisted of the best students from the county area that
would often be selected to go overseas during winter or summer vacations.
 Level 3 (highest level) adult night class students. A shared responsibility between myself and another
teacher from the school.
I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching English to the students in schools in South Korea.
My capacity and my understanding of teaching English to speakers of a foreign language and my teaching toolkit
have grown immensely. I also enjoy having and building good friendships with my peers and Korean co-teachers.
I was often invited by Korean teachers to co-teach on creative writing, reading programs and social media
programs using Facebook, Kakao Talk and SNS (the latter two being Korean social networks) and to collaborate
on projects with Google Docs as well as Google Hangout.
It is always my personal and professional aim to expand my understanding of teaching as well as the creativity
and fun in my classroom.
I am reliable and hardworking. I enjoy working with a team and co-teachers and respect my peers. I’m willing to
learn and apply myself to the outline provided by head teachers and management.
Besides enjoying teaching, I aspire to become a doctor in natural medicine. I came back to South Africa to
further my medical studies towards becoming a Naturopath.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I understand that each student should be seen and taught as an individual.
I focus on three areas in the classroom that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the
teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the students natural curiosity to direct their learning, and (3) promoting
respect for all things and all people.
I encourage students to seek answers and guide them in their written and oral work to help develop and better
express their logical arguments through the English language. Within my teaching techniques, I strive to find
creative ways through technology, props, pictures, TPRS, stories and games to help my students find the context
to which they can relate.

I am from a small town called Riebeek Kasteel in the Western Cape, South Africa. I enjoy snowboarding, art, running, and cycling. I’m interested in natural medicine and dietary lifestyles and its effect on our health. I enjoy a wide variety of friendships across the world and as part of my background in counseling, I find interpersonal relationships and conflict management as very interesting topics. For two years I was privileged to be part of the Klein Nederberg High School in Paarl, the Western Cape. I worked closely with the local church and the social worker of the area while teaching Biblical Studies and acting high school counselor during that time. Over the last three and a half years, I had the opportunity to teach in South Korea. There I taught all grades (Kindergarten, Elementary school, Middle School, High School and I taught adult night classes from beginner to advanced). Most recently (March 2015 to June 2016), I was afforded the opportunity to become part of a school that required their teachers to develop the yearly curriculum for the entire county schools (all grades). Meaning, I had to actively design and develop the course materials as well as the books printed for the course. All of the materials underwent rigorous scrutiny and was perused and approved by the local EPIK School education board. The Super Kids program consisted of the best students from the county area that would often be selected to go overseas during winter or summer vacations.  Level 3 (highest level) adult night class students. A shared responsibility between myself and another teacher from the school. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching English to the students in schools in South Korea. My capacity and my understanding of teaching English to speakers of a foreign language and my teaching toolkit have grown immensely. I also enjoy having and building good friendships with my peers and Korean co-teachers. I was often invited by Korean teachers to co-teach on creative writing, reading programs and social media programs using Facebook, Kakao Talk and SNS (the latter two being Korean social networks) and to collaborate on projects with Google Docs as well as Google Hangout. It is always my personal and professional aim to expand my understanding of teaching as well as the creativity and fun in my classroom. I am reliable and hardworking. I enjoy working with a team and co-teachers and respect my peers. I’m willing to learn and apply myself to the outline provided by head teachers and management. Besides enjoying teaching, I aspire to become a doctor in natural medicine. I came back to South Africa to further my medical studies towards becoming a Naturopath. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY I understand that each student should be seen and taught as an individual. I focus on three areas in the classroom that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the students natural curiosity to direct their learning, and (3) promoting respect for all things and all people. I encourage students to seek answers and guide them in their written and oral work to help develop and better express their logical arguments through the English language. Within my teaching techniques, I strive to find creative ways through technology, props, pictures, TPRS, stories and games to help my students find the context to which they can relate.
