The film Obsession is about a woman who is murdered in the woods by two youths during a mugging. A detective desperately tries to solve the case but becomes obsessed and driven insane by it. The reviewer was happy with the final film but notes some faults, particularly with the short and poorly blended soundtrack. Despite a minimal budget, the technical editing was well done. The most intense scenes were the murder from the killer's perspective and a montage showing the detective becoming increasingly obsessed, culminating in him snapping and throwing his work in frustration. This added tension and suspense as the audience was left guessing whether he would solve the case or spiral into depression without
1. Thriller evaluation tasks.question 4, Grant.
4. My target audience would be from 16-30 years old. I think that the our movie idea
based on suspense and scary factors as the things that you do not see, stalkers etc.
would not be suitable for a very young audience because they would not like to think
about the dangers outside or psychological diversions in the normal thinking (the
idea of the thriller could be seen metaphorically as well). Therefore I think that
younger people than 16 would not take it seriously and would not enjoy it. However,
people around our age and above like thrillers and mysteries in general. Many of us
start to get interested in psychological thrillers and that is the reason why I have
chosen this particular audience. The thriller would also suit people above 20 because
it is energetic, creates tension and is not very common. No matter what young
people are always interested in films, music, sport etc. Especially people still going to
school and college have the time to organize movie nights and watch a movie with
their friends.
The film magazine that I would feel would be most likely to carry reviews and
adverts for our film would be, Empire. This is because it has avidly advertised some
of the biggest selling films of all time. Another reason for thinking that Empire would
be the most likely magazine to promote our film is because it is currently advertising
‘We need to talk about Kevin’. This film is a representative of our film because due to
the fact it is also a thriller, involves intricate plots that evolve, ending in surprise and
disbelief as to how the story line develop.
300 word review:
The film Obsession is all about a lonely isolated
woman walking through a wood at dusk, when 2
youths attempt to mug her and things go horribly
wrong and she ends up being killed. There then is a
detective who trys desperately to solve the case but
ends up driving himself insane over it. I am very
happy with the final outcome of the final project.
But with all films, professional or not they all have
their faults. I believe the biggest fault with our
project was the soundtrack. Our soundtrack diddnt
blend togeather very well because we made it too
short for the clip and I had to cut it and move it
around to try and make it flow better. I think the
film obsession has quite good, technical editing that
looks like it had a bit of time spent on it. The film
had next to nothing for a budget, but they did the
best they could with the situation.
The most intense part of the film was either the
montage of the detective or the actual murder scene.
The murder scene put the audience right in the
action and most of it was from the antagonist point
of view. The montage scene was also intense because it put into perspective
2. what the detective was going through and let the audience see how worked up
he was getting and how obsessed he was getting over the case. It also showed
him ‘snap’ where he just lost it and threw all his work on the floor. This also adds
to the tension and suspence of the film. This also creates an enigma, because it
leaves the audience guessing if he will eventually sove the case and catch the
suspects, or he never catches them and enters a downwards spiral into
depression.
