THRILLER EVALUATION
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP
OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?
• For my thriller I decided to go for a psychological thriller rather than a more conventional
thriller. Psychological thrillers are often more complex with a difficult storyline than other
more conventional thrillers.
• From my research I realised that it would be very difficult to produce a really good
opening if it included violence. Violence would be very difficult to do in a thriller opening
as it is hard to make violence look good in AS Media Studies.
• Rather than going to great lengths to try and make possible violence look watchable in
my opening I chose to use suggested threat as I believe it is more appropriate for my
opening than any running or killing would be as I could make it look a lot more
professional.
• The setting that I chose was at Curber edge which is a very popular rural destination for
walkers and climbers and has an exceptional view of Derbyshire. I thought this location
was fitting for my opening as it is an ideal location for the opening feel I wanted to
achieve with the two characters embarking on a romantic walk rather than it being fast
paced and full of action from the start.
• The slow start of the opening works appropriately as the two characters are just driving
down the road with some light, gentle music playing.
PICTURES AND MUSIC
• With the music I opted for quite a gentle tune as it set the scene well in my opinion when
the two characters are first driving to an unknown location at the start of my opening.
• The music remains consistent throughout the opening until the changing scene where the
two people walking accidently discover a crime scene where there is a child's glove lying
on the grass surrounded by some blood.
• The location is quite alike with some thrillers as it’s a very open windy place which I
decided was ideal for my opening as there is plenty to look at as there is a nice view as
well as the events unfolding in my film.
• The road that the characters are driving down fitted well with the music as well as the
main location as it is a small country road in the middle of the peak district.
• My film included a variety of shots including over the shoulder shots, an establishing shot
and others such as a low shot while the two characters walk into the shot past the
camera.
STORYLINE
• The storyline of my thriller opening is around a child going missing in a village local to the
location and two people discover the crime scene while walking in the country.
• I thought that this plot and done in the correct way my film could be classed as a
psychological thriller. This is because I didn’t want to include and violence in the opening
scene and throughout the rest there would only be suggested threat.
• I believed this would make my film different to other products as many thriller films have
instant violence and go into the lot straight away and sudden whereas mine is steady
with no violence.
