A thriller film’s purpose is to thrill the audience by shocking them with the narrative devices, such as enigma codes and suspenseful music. CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF THRILLER: • The element of Climax and Cliff- hangers • Villain driven narrative • Suspense and Mystery • Red Hearings ( Characters or actions put in deliberately within the narrative to confuse the audience) • Enigma Codes ( Puzzle or Mystery for the audience to solve) • Clear element of Good VS Evil within the plot.
- 3. Thriller Sub-genres CRIME THRILLERS Themain aspect of a crime thriller is that the narrative focusses on crimes and criminals within society. The narrative revolves around solving the mystery or crime by tracking down the criminal, this is conveyed through the main protagonist in the film which is usually a investigator who is a cop. This suspense aspect of crime thriller is conveyed through fast paced editing and narratives that is considered as more dramatic and realistic. Crime thrillers are based on real crimes such as murders committed by serial killers.

Such as assassinations or terrorism and mass murder. In this genre many enigma codes are used as a way to cause dramatic effect towards the audience.

This genre focuses heavily on the mental state of the main characters or main protagonist. It incorporates elements of mystery, drama and horror together. The characters within psychological thrillers try to battle their mental stability throughout the narrative of the film. The narratives convey this aspect by making their characters double sided for example playing devilish or psychological games that tests the protagonist and others physically trying to destroy the protagonist. This genre is effective as plays with audiences emotions and mind which causes suspense and tension.

In this case within thrillers they incorporate this by using narratives that manipulate technology such as showing technology as the downfall of human kind and earth which takes place in the film IRobot. This subgenre also includes elements of action genre creating more tension and suspense such as highlighting futuristic advancements in weaponry.

Thriller Sub- genre SUPERNATURALTHRILLER This subgenre has lots of suspense and tension, as the narrative of a supernatural thriller is that the main protagonist or the villain has supernatural powers or they are around the supernatural by the setting or actions they commit. For example it highlights the aspect of the devil or ghosts. This is usually because the director wants to send a message towards the audience about moral or religious influences within society and want to bring out people fears of the unknown. This is effective as it creates a build of tension throughout the narrative.
