This final project aims to empirically complement concurrent theory that is class focus: socialization, decision making, conflict management and organizational change and leadership, issues of emotion, diversity and technological disruption in organizations. Linking class theory to real organizational practice, students should choose an organization on campus or off campus, public or private, and investigate organizational communication aspects within these organizations. Fraternities, sororities, etc. are not suitable for this study. Beyond that, groups have wide latitude in choosing organizations: they can range from academic departments, religious institutions, food places, corporations, museums, more. Core criteria for choice: it must be an organization (identity, labor force, remuneration, physical presence as workplace); it must be amenable for communication analysis (mission, productivity, communication output). Assuming roles of communication consultants, each team of students should study and prepare: 1. An overview of the organization (research, participant observation) 2. Identifying unique socialization, decision making, conflict management and organizational change/ leadership aspects of the organization (research, interpretive analytics, participant observation) 3. Assessing these aspects using class theory (literature analysis) 4. Collect and interpret data on organization’s diversity, technological adaptations and consideration of emotion, gender in work process) 5. A strategic communication plan for organization’s next 5 years (analysis)--MY PART All said and done, students will be writing and telling a communication story about the organization. .

A Garbage Can Model of Organizational Choice
Organized anarchies are organizations characterized hy problematic preferences,
unclear technology, and fluid participation. Recent studies of universities, a fami-
liar form of organized anarchy, suggest that such organizations can be viewed for
some purposes as collections of choices looking for problems, issues and feelings
looking for decision situations in which they might he aired, solutions looking for
issues to which they might he an answer, and decision makers looking for work.
These ideas are translated into an explicit computer simulation model of a gar-
hage can decision process. The general implications of such a model are descrihed
in terms of five major measures on the process. Possible applications of the model
to more narrow predictions are illustrated by an examination of the models pre-
dictions with respect to the effect of adversity on university decision making.
Gonsider organized anarchies. These are
organizations—or decision situations—char-
acterized by three general properties.^ The
first is problematic preferences. In the organi-
zation it is difiBcult to impute a set of prefer-
ences to the decision situation that satisfies
the standard consistency requirements for a
theory of choice. The organization operates
on the basis of a variety of inconsistent and
ill-defined preferences. It can be described
better as a loose collection of ideas than as a
coherent structure; it discovers preferences
through action more than it acts on the basis
of preferences.
The second property is unclear technology.
Although the organization manages to sur-
vive and even produce, its own processes are
not understood by its members. It operates
on the basis of simple trial-and-error proce-
dures, the residue of learning from the acci-
dents of past experience, and pragmatic in-

The case study analysis has been a method of teaching students how to use critical thinking and
analysis skills and to develop organizational and communication skills. In practice, a case study
is a written record and analysis of the events that occurred at a particular company. The details
of each case vary; however, most cases consist of information about the company or project;
goals, strategies, and challenges faced; and results and/or recommendations.
Case studies have a particular benefit in management research. When you analyze a case, you are

In this presentation, you will learn more about some specific types of projects in action research. This will provide fertile ground to plant your own possible dissertation concepts and topics to grow and tend over the coming quarters!
Remember – action research must include the participants as part of the solution development, and it must be community based, no matter how broad or large that community might be. Finally, action for social change must occur.
Four typical types of action research:
Diagnostic

Typical ways to link action and research – through outcomes:

Organized anarchies are organizations characterized hy problematic preferences,
unclear technology, and fluid participation. Recent studies of universities, a fami-
liar form of organized anarchy, suggest that such organizations can be viewed for
some purposes as collections of choices looking for problems, issues and feelings
looking for decision situations in which they might he aired, solutions looking for
issues to which they might he an answer, and decision makers looking for work.
These ideas are translated into an explicit computer simulation model of a gar-
hage can decision process. The general implications of such a model are descrihed
in terms of five major measures on the process. Possible applications of the model
to more narrow predictions are illustrated by an examination of the models pre-
dictions with respect to the effect of adversity on university decision making.
Gonsider organized anarchies. These are
organizations—or decision situations—char-
acterized by three general properties.^ The
first is problematic preferences. In the organi-
zation it is difiBcult to impute a set of prefer-
ences to the decision situation that satisfies
the standard consistency requirements for a
theory of choice. The organization operates
on the basis of a variety of inconsistent and
ill-defined preferences. It can be described
better as a loose collection of ideas than as a
coherent structure; it discovers preferences
through action more than it acts on the basis
of preferences.
The second property is unclear technology.
Although the organization manages to sur-
vive and even produce, its own processes are
not understood by its members. It operates
on the basis of simple trial-and-error proce-
dures, the residue of learning from the acci-
dents of past experience, and pragmatic in-

Collaborative Inquiry: Participatory Action
In this presentation, you will learn more about some specific types of projects in action research. This will provide fertile ground to plant your own possible dissertation concepts and topics to grow and tend over the coming quarters!
Remember – action research must include the participants as part of the solution development, and it must be community based, no matter how broad or large that community might be. Finally, action for social change must occur.
Four typical types of action research:
Diagnostic

Siemens' Simple Structure
There is perhaps no tougher task for an executive than to restructure a European organization. Ask former Siemens CEO Klaus Kleinfeld.
Siemens, with 77 billion euros in revenue in 2008, some 427,000 employees, and branches in 190 countries, is one of the largest electronics companies in the world. Although the company has long been respected for its engineering prowess, it's also derided for its sluggishness and mechanistic structure. So when Kleinfeld took over as CEO, he sought to restructure the company along the lines of what Jack Welch did at General Electric. He has tried to make the structure less bureaucratic so decisions are made more quickly. He spun off underperforming businesses. And he simplified the company's structure.
Kleinfeld's efforts drew angry protests from employee groups, with constant picket lines outside his corporate offices. One of the challenges of transforming European organizations is the customary active participation of employees in executive decisions. Half the seats on the Siemens' board of directors are allocated to labor representatives. Not surprisingly, the labor groups did not react positively to Kleinfeld's GE-like restructuring efforts. In his efforts to speed those efforts, labor groups alleged, Kleinfeld secretly bankrolled a business-friendly workers' group to try to undermine Germany's main industrial union.
Due to this and other allegations, Kleinfeld was forced out in June 2007 and replaced by Peter Löscher. Löscher has found the same tensions between inertia and the need for restructuring. Only a month after becoming CEO, Löscher was faced with a decision whether to spin off the firm's underperforming 10 billion-euro auto parts unit, VDO. He had to weigh the forces for stability, which want to protect worker interests, against US-style pressures for financial performance. One of VDO's possible buyers is a US company, TRW, the controlling interest of which is held by Blackstone, a US private equity firm. German labor representatives have derided such private equity firms as "locusts." When Löscher decided to sell VDO to German tire giant Continental Corporation, Continental promptly began to downsize and restructure the unit's operations.
Löscher has continued to restructure Siemens. In mid-2008, he announced elimination of nearly 17,000 jobs worldwide. He also announced plans to consolidate more business units and reorganize the company's operations geographically. "The speed at which business is changing worldwide has increased considerably, and we're orienting Siemens accordingly," Löscher said.

This “Assignment 2” writing assignment is a comparative essay focused on topics encountered in our HUM 111 class. The project will be based on research but will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities as an organized, innovative, and critical thinker. If approached properly, it should also be fun!
Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that follows instructions and covers each part of the topic. (The title page and References list do not get included in this word count).
Note:
Your instructor may require you to submit your topic choice for approval before the end of Week 5.
For the topic you choose:
Establish a clear thesis about your topic as part of the introductory paragraph (often the thesis is the last thing one determines after doing the basic research and outline; however it will be placed in the first paragraph of your paper).
This is a comparative essay. Comparison approached properly will require some critical thinking on your part. Use a point-by-point approach for the essay. That means, if comparing subject A with subject B, don't do the first half of the essay on subject A and then the second half on subject B--that will seem like two (2) separate essays and comparisons will tend to get lost. Instead, you should be mentioning both subjects in most of your paragraphs as you compare them throughout the essay. Comparisons will identify similarities as well as contrasts.
Do not try to do everything on your two (2) subjects. You should end up narrowing your focus to a few insights and issues about the subjects being compared. And, from those fairly specific points of comparison, you will develop a thesis and glean some lessons.
Follow closely the instructions below for your specific topic.
Include a concluding paragraph at the end. This paragraph will, in some way, refer back to the thesis established in your first paragraph, since now you have demonstrated and supported it. It may be here that you also include your observations relating your study to the modern workplace or society (see your topic). Try to finish with flair!
Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Linking class theory to real organizational practice, students should choose an organization on campus or off campus, public or private, and investigate organizational communication aspects within these organizations. Fraternities, sororities, etc. are not suitable for this study. Beyond that, groups have wide latitude in choosing organizations: they can range from academic departments, religious institutions, food places, corporations, museums, more.
