This thesis examines whether and how microcredit can empower resource-poor rural women in post-war contexts, taking the Democratic Republic of Congo as a case study. Through qualitative interviews and participatory research, the thesis explores the impacts of microcredit on women at the individual, household, and community levels. E-mentoring can improve student employability and develop intercultural skills. A pilot e-mentoring program paired civil engineering students with industry mentors through online communication. Mentees reported gaining career advice, networking opportunities, and confidence. They discovered skills they did not know they had. Mentors helped optimize CVs and provided multiple perspectives on interviews beyond one-dimensional sources. E-mentoring allowed discussions that looked deeper at individual strengths beyond CVs. It can facilitate understanding of different working cultures and mutual development of intercultural competence for global industry.

This document describes two algorithms for determining water depth from high-resolution satellite imagery: a standard linear transform algorithm and a new ratio transform algorithm. The linear transform requires tuning five parameters and does not work for very low albedo bottoms, while the ratio transform requires tuning only two parameters and can handle low albedo features. Both algorithms were tested on IKONOS imagery of two coral reef atolls in the Hawaiian Islands against lidar bathymetry data. The ratio transform performed as well as the linear transform and was more robust, stable between areas, and able to retrieve depths over 25m. However, it was also slightly noisier and had trouble resolving fine structures below 15-20m depth.

This document describes two algorithms for determining water depth from high-resolution satellite imagery: a standard linear transform algorithm and a new ratio transform algorithm. The linear transform requires tuning five parameters and does not work for very low albedo bottoms, while the ratio transform requires tuning only two parameters and can handle low albedo features. Both algorithms were tested on IKONOS imagery of two coral reef atolls in the Hawaiian Islands against lidar bathymetry data. The ratio transform performed as well as the linear transform and was more robust, stable between areas, and able to retrieve depths over 25m. However, it was also slightly noisier and had trouble resolving fine structures below 15-20m depth.
This document outlines a study to monitor the health of marine ecosystems in Lokobe National Park in Madagascar. The study will conduct surveys of fish populations, coral health conditions, and oceanographic parameters to assess ecosystem health and determine if declines in coral health can be linked to environmental factors. Methods include rapid fish surveys, line transect surveys of coral cover and health, water quality testing, and GPS mapping. The goal is to establish long-term monitoring methods that can be conducted by students and researchers to track changes in the marine environment over time.
1) The Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center is mapping benthic habitats around 55 islands and atolls in the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands using multibeam sonar and optical groundtruthing to characterize coral reef ecosystems.
2) From 2002-2007, multibeam mapping was conducted around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Main Hawaiian Islands, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and Pacific Remote Island Areas.
3) In 2008-2009, priority areas for additional mapping include French Frigate Shoals and Pearl and Hermes Reef in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands to fill gaps in existing data.

This document discusses the challenges of surveying the deep sea using acoustic remote sensing and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Obtaining high resolution data at fine spatial scales is difficult due to issues with positioning systems on ROVs and the cumulative errors from different positioning sources. Precisely co-registering ROV-collected multibeam bathymetry, video, and motion data is challenging due to errors from the vessel's GPS, acoustic positioning of the ROV, uncertainties in the ROV's configuration, platform motion, timing synchronization between datasets, and data logging frequency. Overcoming these errors is important for mapping seafloor habitats and distributions of biological species at fine spatial scales.

This document discusses quantitative and qualitative seismic interpretation techniques used to analyze seismic data and map subsurface geology. This document describes research conducted by Susan Smith and Rand Rasmussen of the NMFS Southwest Fisheries Science Center to identify Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for several pelagic shark species within the U.S. West Coast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The researchers analyzed catch data from fisheries observers and logbooks to determine habitat use and boundaries for common thresher, pelagic thresher, bigeye thresher, shortfin mako, blue, and white sharks. They found that habitat ranges from inshore waters to over 1,000 fathoms deep and extends from Mexico to Washington, with some variability between life stages and species.

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
