Evaluate the impact of the Pequot War on either the Europeans or Natives.
Step 2: In 50 words or more, state why you chose the topic and focus question that you chose. It could be how the topic is of interest to you and that you have studied it previously, or it could be a subject that you want to learn more about something of which you do not have knowledge.
I opted for “This Land is My Land” topic due to my insightful interest to explore historical events related to patriotism and balancing power between Europeans and Natives in situations such as trade negotiations. The trade aspect drove me to be specific on the focus question that need to address the impacts of Pequot War to Europeans and Natives. In this case, the contact of both had profound effect where balance of power shifted overnight from natives to Europeans. My choice is therefore grounded on the enthusiasm to discover more knowledge into this particular aspect.

By the end of the eighteenth century, Spanish America was dealing with various changes produced by the so called Bourbon Reforms. In order to increase the authority of the monarch and his control over colonial territory, these reforms focused on limiting traditional privileges to colonial subjects. The Catholic Church was one powerful colonial institution, whose power the Spanish monarch tried to diminish.
In his report, bishop Manuel Abad y Queipo defended the clergy fuero, which the Crown was threatening to end. This fuero provided legal privileges to members of the clergy, by which they could be process in an ecclesiastical court instead of in a secular court (with not-religious judges). However, he also provides an interesting description of the various social groups in colonial Spanish America. While reading the report, you can see the different interest that these social groups had, and how this diversity made colonial society even more complex.

Welcome to Mexican American History I (HIST 2327). This packet contains introductory reading and will assist
you with this week’s activities. In this first reading assignment students will explore information about identity,
the Mexican American Studies Program, the historian’s purpose, and the course learning objectives.
Identity
While this course is titled Mexican American History, the topics explored in this course will extend beyond the
Mexican-American experience of residents in the United States southwest. We will study the caste system in
New Spain, otherwise known as colonial Mexico. As we progress through the course students will develop an
understanding of ethnic distinctions, how different groups self-identify, and the historical aspects of institutions
governing these diverse groups. This class will explore the experiences of Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Philippinos; we
will investigate United States’ policies in Latin America. This course is not just a study of the Mexican-American
experience along the contemporary U.S.-Mexico border because doing so would undermine the importance of
recognizing similarities of life experiences among the broader Hispanic/Latino population. Based on the 2010
Census, one in four children in the United States is Hispanic. While the census data does reduce identity more
finely to account for distinction of native country, most day-to-day experiences with language, learning,
interactions with law enforcement, representation, etc. are experiences shared by all Latino/as, regardless of
national origin. The following passage, written by Puerto-Rican born Angel Oquendo, illustrates the importance
of broadening the scope of our course study:
Categorizing on the basis of physical features, of course is an
accepted practice in the United States. In fact, this society
has primarily used physiognomy to create the “Hispanic”
category. Yet what really unites Latino/as is their unique
history of oppression. Unlike other immigrant groups, the
largest Latino/as groups—Mexicans and Puerto Ricans—did
not come into the United States via Ellis Island; they entered
through the brutal process of U.S. imperial expansion. They
were militarily attacked, invaded, colonized, and annexed.
This common experience has caused them to form a unified
community, which now includes other people of Latin
American ancestry.1
In truth, most people who self-identify as Latino/a in the United States have entered the country due to U.S.
imperial activity in their native country, as we will see in later in the course. Those who did not enter the United
States, but instead witnessed the United States passing over into their country and annexing them have also

Introduction:
In the book of “Daily Life during the California Gold Rush” wrote by Thomas Long, mainly discussed about that during the 1849 to 1855, many people are heading to California looking for gold and want to be wealthy. This has gave Californians a benefit of economic opportunities. The Argonaut came to California and digging for golds. This has made an effect on making California grew dramatically faster than others. This period of time is called a California Gold Rush and this is one of the most significant event in the United States history that brought a dramatic changes in the population growth, the territory and the economic growth.
Chapter 1:
Chapter 1 mainly discussed about the history of Californians before the gold rush event had occurred. Even though the Gold Rush has incredibly changed the environment of California, but many of those surroundings are changed before with the discovery of the chemical GOLD during the 1848.
Many people already visited California and they already inhabited by variety of people before the discovery of gold. They gather into groups and they create their own system of values which it leads to a change of the California’s environment. The Indians have already lived in California for over 10 thousand years ago. They are the first group who discovered California. They are the only people who live in California until the Spanish people came and began to colonize California in 1769. From then, there were over 300,000 Indians living in California representing over 100 tribes. It was a diverse collection of societies with distinct cultures and traditions. This all would change drastically with the arrival of the Spaniards.

President Polk wanted to combine California and New Mexico together and make them turn to a part of the United States territory which leads to an initiated war. Historians are interested in slavery, students in racism. Historians want to know how and when slavery originated and developed as an institution protected by law; students want to know why whites and blacks, who have so much in common, still seem to identify themselves as if they were different people with different cultures. This week covers the history and ideas from Chapter 3 in the textbook along with additional materials and perspectives about the slave trade, specifically the concept of "Slave Culture". Slavery is one of the most painful and difficult topics in American history, but you have a chance in this chapter to make the point that institutions usually reflect social demands, and that institutions designed to serve one purpose can be adapted to serve altogether different ends. American slavery clearly began as the profitable solution to an economic problem. By the time slavery was destroyed, it had become the unprofitable solution to a social problem.

The question of English racism is being reconsidered by scholars at present, but even if it existed to a significant degree in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it would have worked both for and against the introduction of enslaved Africans into the colonies. If the English hated or feared Africans enough to enslave them, why not keep Africans out of the colonies altogether? Whatever the truth about English racism, it is clear that economics played the crucial role in the introduction of slavery into British North America.

An English colonist wealthy enough to buy labor had a choice between an English or European indentured servant and an enslaved African. Until around 1700 in British North America, the choice was usually to buy a servant because that purchase made more economic sense. The planter made a series of calculations that you can present to your students in the form of a simple model. There are many different things that can cause a company’s actual value to be skewered in real life from what an investor would perceive it to be on paper. One key thing to consider when evaluating a company’s worth is their market value compared to book value. As our text explains, market value is what the company is essentially worth in the stock market. Book value is the value of the company on paper according mainly to the balance sheet. A key ratio when determining worth is the companies Price-to-book ratio which will show you how much the company is worth based on the stock market compared to their balance sheet. A high ratio would indicate the company is worth much more than their assets alone which is what any investor would demand. A number falling under one could reflect that the company isn't performing up to a break even, or up to what they are even worth on paper. Other key ratios include ROA (return-on-assets) and ROE (return-on-equity) which are key indicators of how the company performs given its financing. Efficiency is another key area for many investors which shows how much money or how well a company can operate on what they have. If two companies are in the same industry, and company A can produce $100M in NOI with four employees, while it takes company B six employees to meet the $100M mark, then company A will have a higher efficiency ratio. The same principal goes for machinery that is being considered for purchase. A financial manager will consider the cost it takes to run the machine compared to its production load. Investors looking at efficiency essentially want to know their investment is being “maximized” to its fullest potential. High efficiency ratios create value for shareholders with maximized profits on assets (Fundamentals of corporate finance). This value isn't always reflected in the financial statements as efficiency ratios can be high or low regardless of the size of the company or the income it brings in.
Also discussed in our book, price to earnings or the P/E ratio is a key ratio that should be evaluated before any investor invests in a company. Once again, the income statement and balance sheet does not directly reflect this ratio, as fluctuations of income from company to company lead to different ratios. A company with very small income can have a high P/E ratio while a multi-billion dollar corporation can have a smaller ratio. It is up to the company executives to create value for all shareholders regardless of income, and make sure the dividends show growth. Many investors are not interested in companies that grow. Most would invest in a company today with a smaller dividend that will grow, than in a company that has a larger dividend but isn't growing (Between the numbers).

I opted for “This Land is My Land” topic due to my insightful interest to explore historical events related to patriotism and balancing power between Europeans and Natives in situations such as trade negotiations. The trade aspect drove me to be specific on the focus question that need to address the impacts of Pequot War to Europeans and Natives. In this case, the contact of both had profound effect where balance of power shifted overnight from natives to Europeans. My choice is therefore grounded on the enthusiasm to discover more knowledge into this particular aspect.

Welcome to Mexican American History I (HIST 2327). This packet contains introductory reading and will assist
you with this week’s activities. In this first reading assignment students will explore information about identity,
the Mexican American Studies Program, the historian’s purpose, and the course learning objectives.
Identity
While this course is titled Mexican American History, the topics explored in this course will extend beyond the
Mexican-American experience of residents in the United States southwest. We will study the caste system in
New Spain, otherwise known as colonial Mexico. As we progress through the course students will develop an
understanding of ethnic distinctions, how different groups self-identify, and the historical aspects of institutions
governing these diverse groups. This class will explore the experiences of Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Philippinos; we
will investigate United States’ policies in Latin America. This course is not just a study of the Mexican-American
experience along the contemporary U.S.-Mexico border because doing so would undermine the importance of
recognizing similarities of life experiences among the broader Hispanic/Latino population. Based on the 2010
Census, one in four children in the United States is Hispanic. While the census data does reduce identity more
finely to account for distinction of native country, most day-to-day experiences with language, learning,
interactions with law enforcement, representation, etc. are experiences shared by all Latino/as, regardless of
national origin. The following passage, written by Puerto-Rican born Angel Oquendo, illustrates the importance
of broadening the scope of our course study:
Categorizing on the basis of physical features, of course is an
accepted practice in the United States. In fact, this society
has primarily used physiognomy to create the “Hispanic”
category. Yet what really unites Latino/as is their unique
history of oppression. Unlike other immigrant groups, the
largest Latino/as groups—Mexicans and Puerto Ricans—did
not come into the United States via Ellis Island; they entered
through the brutal process of U.S. imperial expansion. They
were militarily attacked, invaded, colonized, and annexed.
This common experience has caused them to form a unified
community, which now includes other people of Latin
American ancestry.1
In truth, most people who self-identify as Latino/a in the United States have entered the country due to U.S.
imperial activity in their native country, as we will see in later in the course. Those who did not enter the United
States, but instead witnessed the United States passing over into their country and annexing them have also

In the book of “Daily Life during the California Gold Rush” wrote by Thomas Long, mainly discussed about that during the 1849 to 1855, many people are heading to California looking for gold and want to be wealthy. This has gave Californians a benefit of economic opportunities. The Argonaut came to California and digging for golds. This has made an effect on making California grew dramatically faster than others. This period of time is called a California Gold Rush and this is one of the most significant event in the United States history that brought a dramatic changes in the population growth, the territory and the economic growth.
Chapter 1:
Chapter 1 mainly discussed about the history of Californians before the gold rush event had occurred. Even though the Gold Rush has incredibly changed the environment of California, but many of those surroundings are changed before with the discovery of the chemical GOLD during the 1848.
Many people already visited California and they already inhabited by variety of people before the discovery of gold. They gather into groups and they create their own system of values which it leads to a change of the California’s environment. The Indians have already lived in California for over 10 thousand years ago. They are the first group who discovered California. They are the only people who live in California until the Spanish people came and began to colonize California in 1769. From then, there were over 300,000 Indians living in California representing over 100 tribes. It was a diverse collection of societies with distinct cultures and traditions. The question of English racism is being reconsidered by scholars at present, but even if it existed to a significant degree in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it would have worked both for and against the introduction of enslaved Africans into the colonies. If the English hated or feared Africans enough to enslave them, why not keep Africans out of the colonies altogether? Whatever the truth about English racism, it is clear that economics played the crucial role in the introduction of slavery into British North America.

An English colonist wealthy enough to buy labor had a choice between an English or European indentured servant and an enslaved African. Until around 1700 in British North America, the choice was usually to buy a servant because that purchase made more economic sense. The planter weighed four factors: the initial cost of the laborer, the annual cost of maintenance, the annual output per worker and the length of service. One key thing to consider when evaluating a company’s worth is their market value compared to book value. As our text explains, market value is what the company is essentially worth in the stock market. Book value is the value of the company on paper according mainly to the balance sheet. A key ratio when determining worth is the companies Price-to-book ratio which will show you how much the company is worth based on the stock market compared to their balance sheet. A high ratio would indicate the company is worth much more than their assets alone which is what any investor would demand. A number falling under one could reflect that the company isn't performing up to a break even, or up to what they are even worth on paper. Other key ratios include ROA (return-on-assets) and ROE (return-on-equity) which are key indicators of how the company performs given its financing. Efficiency is another key area for many investors which shows how much money or how well a company can operate on what they have. If two companies are in the same industry, and company A can produce $100M in NOI with four employees, while it takes company B six employees to meet the $100M mark, then company A will have a higher efficiency ratio. The same principal goes for machinery that is being considered for purchase. A financial manager will consider the cost it takes to run the machine compared to its production load. Investors looking at efficiency essentially want to know their investment is being “maximized” to its fullest potential. High efficiency ratios create value for shareholders with maximized profits on assets (Fundamentals of corporate finance). This value isn't always reflected in the financial statements as efficiency ratios can be high or low regardless of the size of the company or the income it brings in.
Also discussed in our book, price to earnings or the P/E ratio is a key ratio that should be evaluated before any investor invests in a company. Once again, the income statement and balance sheet does not directly reflect this ratio, as fluctuations of income from company to company lead to different ratios. A company with very small income can have a high P/E ratio while a multi-billion dollar corporation can have a smaller ratio. It is up to the company executives to create value for all shareholders regardless of income, and make sure the dividends show growth. Many investors are not interested in companies that grow. Most would invest in a company today with a smaller dividend that will grow, than in a company that has a larger dividend but isn't growing (Between the numbers).

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
