Maya Angelou was an influential American author, poet and civil rights activist. She had a prolific career writing autobiographies, poetry, plays, and screenplays. She experienced racial discrimination growing up in the southern United States but found her passion for the arts. Her acclaimed autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" brought her international success and acclaim. Throughout her career she broke barriers as a Black woman, including writing the first screenplay by an African American woman. She advised two U.S. presidents and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts.
