The World Would Be Better If…
Technology were just a tool, not a way of life.
But, to error is human, to have a conversation can allowfor perspective, and to forget can be beneficial.
None of this applies the modern zeitgeist, of technology that has surpassed the purpose of being a helpful tool, but
extensions of ourselves. Technology has evolved into our identity, and it may not be for the best.
It’s can be said thattechnology shows signs of progress and acts as a benefit to society. However, as we have
found ways to simplify our lives in means of shopping,self-expression,and how we entertain ourselves,we
unintentionally blended the Laws of Proxemics, altered how we communicate, and lostvaluein interpersonal
relationships. Theresults of which are showingin all factors of society rangingfromeconomically to socially, and
the results could be disastrousin thegrand scheme of the lives of future cultures.
First, allowme to clarify,I amnot speakingas a certified expert on sociology,or as someone not relianton
technology. I am speakingsolely as a 25 year old, mother, friend, creative artistin the world of film. My age is
fairly an importantfactor to this stance, as a member of the millennial generation,we were the lastgeneration to
have house phones, to know what itwas to “wait by the phone” for a call ,or havingto get off the computer so our
parents could use the phone. We were the lastgeneration to make plans with friends and talk in-person for hours
on in - verbally. We were the lastgeneration to understand what human interaction was,for better or worse.
Allowme to also statehowever, technology is a useful tool and has served, and shall continueto serve, as a
great benefit to society. However, as a society we have developed an unhealthy codependency on technology as
form of not only communication, but as our identity - or in some cases, what we perceive our identity to be.
Cellphones have changed how we even interactwith one another. How we become acquainted and how we
maintain relationships. Atext message is NOT conversation. No one knows genuinely how to hold a conversation
anymore. It’s justso awkward now caused strictly fromthe hours and hours a day spent not talkingaloud.
Now, lets take a look at Amazon and other onlineretailers they act as the dispensary for goods and services.
This has not only limited customer options but limited customer interaction and contact. For as efficientas
Amazon and Google may be, they will never know you more personal than that human being that is attempting to
make you laugh whileringingyou up on a bad day. No website can take the placeof that personal experience of
knowing a customer firsthand and personally. Ashoppingexperience wasn’t always perfect, and sometimes things
weren’t always great. However, to error is human, to have a conversation can allowfor perspective, and to forget
can be beneficial.
Lastly,Social Media has ended communication, destroyed the laws of proxemics, and consumed our identity.
I can attest a point; I could have known a person for years and never once known anythingabout their views on
politics or religion. Now, due to social media,we broadcastdaily our views, opinions, and affiliation, and very few
times is itto partake in conversation.
We lostitcompletely. We lostourselves in the packagewe can sell and market ourselves to be. We lost
ourselves in the egocentrism that is our own inner-self and wanting to be accepted. We lostourselves in
Instagramand SnapChatFilters that hide our flaws instead of being embraced for those vary sameattributes that
make us justastounding. Instead,we flatout lieand deceive for “Likes” and attention because there is justno
more damned communication. All we have is “Pictures,”and fake pictures atthat! All we have is Pictures, pictures
that are staged with no memory that is special or important - justa post for acceptanceby people who don’t even
know you, much less KNOW you as anymore that fake generic package you marketed yourself as.
I know. Because I’m a fake generic package.
I have my own company and in the filmindustry,I’m not allowed bad days or bad moods. I always must
present that I love myself and show confidence, when most days I don’t even likemyself and want nothing more
than to have a real conversation with a real human being. But I want to be heard. Really heard.
But we can’t be heard anymore outsideof 140 characters or a simplestatement on a meme and must be
identified as nothing more than that. We’ve summarized ourselves, complicated, beautiful souls, into justa few
words and few perfectly posed pictures we claimto be candid.
In conclusion,I’mnot an expert in sociology, butcan state that in studies, the largestdemographic in the
WORLD, in nearly every culture, the most neglected people are the elderly. Of everyone in the world, they are the
forgotten people and receive the leastamount of contact, both physically and psychologically. The scary truth, as I
see we areleavinga world that will never even learned how truly amazingthe world was when we spoke to each
other and dates didn’t involveanyone eyes clued to a cellphone, and meal didn’t have to be photographed. All we
had was each other. All we needed was justthat.
So, let go of that technology more. Make time for being justthat imperfect you. Take less selfies and make
more memories. We aren’t that profileand that’s okay because, to error i s human,to have a conversation can
allowfor real perspective.
